What exothermic and endothermic reactions do you encounter on a daily basis?<br />

Objective:<br />

C5.4d Explain why freezing is an exothermic change <strong>of</strong> state.<br />

Teacher Notes:<br />

This is a structured inquiry project that should be done when students have a strong<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> exothermic and endothermic reactions and heat flow.<br />

Real World Connections:<br />

Students are tying in real world examples <strong>of</strong> heat flow in systems.<br />

Procedure:<br />

Student Directions: Think about two exothermic and two endothermic reactions or<br />

processes that you encounter in your everyday life.<br />

Record the following information:<br />

• the direction <strong>of</strong> heat flow<br />

• the change in the enthalpy <strong>of</strong> the system<br />

• change in enthalpy <strong>of</strong> the surroundings<br />
