A Quarterly In-house Journal of Oando Group
Apr - Jun, 2009. Quarter 2
Oando Energy Services, a
subsidiary of Oando PLC -
Nigeria’s leading integrated
energy solutions provider, has emerged
Nigeria’s largest indigenous drilling
contractor with Oando’s acquisition of two
inland barge rigs from Shell Petroleum
Development Company of Nigeria Limited
(SPDC) for an estimated USD 43.5 million
inclusive of VAT.
This latest acquisition brings to five, the
total number of rigs in Oando’s fleet and
clearly reinforces the company’s position
as the leading beacon in the oilfield
services sector of Nigeria’s oil and gas
industry.
Commenting on the acquisition, Mr. Uche
Dimiri, Chief Executive Officer, Oando
Energy Services, said: “The Niger Delta
swamps contain abundant reserves that
are crucial to Nigeria achieving its plan to
increase production levels to 4 million
barrels per day by 2010. The
understanding that there must be
increased drilling activity across all stages
of oil exploitation, from exploration to
development, for the government’s targets
to be realised forms the basis of our
continued investments in swamp drilling
rigs. The cantilever capability of Rig 2
(formerly Parker rig 75) is unique in
Nigeria. This feature enables Rig 2 to drill
multiple well slots while remaining at the
same client location, thus optimising
reservoir drainage while reducing the
overall cost of well construction. We
intend to combine this uniqueness with
our superior community relations
expertise to deliver not only significant
cost savings but other operational
efficiencies to our customers. An added
feature of Rig 1 is its 3,000 horsepower
rating which gives Oando the flexibility to
upgrade it to a High Pressure, High
Temperature (HPHT) rig. This conversion
will increase to two the number of such
rigs in-country for exploiting reservoirs with
such peculiarity.”
enhancement and upgrade prior to its
deployment in 2010.” Mr. Dimiri added.
Mr. Wale Tinubu Group Chief Executive
said, “This latest acquisition boosts our
investment to approximately $250 million
out of the $500 million five-year
development plan announced prior. With
a further resolve to increase our rig fleet
in the near future, we are positioning
plants at Oando service stations
nationwide.
This initiative involves the
installation of LPG dispensing
pumps which will enable on-thespot
dispensing of LPG using a
pump meter into the customers’
cylinders and instant collection
of gas and cylinder by the
customer from the station of
purchase. The gas dispensing
pump is equipped with modern
day technology which enables
it to fill gas cylinders of different
types and specifications
ensuring no customer is
exempted from enjoying the
benefits of this initiative.
The key benefits of this initiative
to customers are as follows:
1. Availability: Available at
designated Oando
service stations near the
customers
2. Affordability: Competitive
pricing, simply within the
customers means.
3. Flexibility: Customers
can buy what they can
afford per time,
depending on cash
available and not cylinder
4. Accuracy: Equipment is
kitted with a meter to give
customers precise
measure and value for
money.
would also enjoy free
cylinder checks/ service
on purchase
6. Safety: Oando products
and services meet safety
standards and
regulations.
The first phase of the deployment
plan for the LPG filling plants is
scheduled for June 2009 with
deployment to 10 Oando service
stations in Lagos, Abuja and
Kaduna. Subsequent phases
are scheduled for later in the year
which will see deployment of this
innovation to additional 20
Oando service stations
nationwide by year end. With this
initiative, Oando Marketing is
bringing respite to Nigerians gas
customers who up until now
have had to live with several
challenges associated with gas
purchase.
Our commitment is to give existing
and prospective LPG customers
a convenient, safe means of gas
dispensing, purchase at a price
they can afford while they still get
to keep their cylinders. With this
innovation, we have not only
succeeded in achieving that but
also guaranteed refill of gas
cylinders of various types and
specification with this equipment”.
innovation and setting the pace
in the Oil and gas industry. This
innovation is a clear
demonstration of our will power to
go the extra mile in introducing
innovative products and services
which are of great value and
deliver true benefits to our
customers. We are proud to
premiere this technologically
advanced initiative in African
Sub-Saharan region with a
competent partner, BannerGas
and most importantly demonstrate
the customer centric nature of our
organization”.
OES Presents to National Content Development
Local Content or Nigerian
Content (as the case may
be) is no doubt a widely
accepted concept in the oil and
gas industry. However
implementing its objectives is a
major responsibility that has
been vested on all players –both
local and international – in the
industry. One indigenous
company that has the capacity
to operate according to the local
content dictates in terms of local
development of technical
expertise is Oando Energy
Services Limited (OESL).
Driven by an indigenous
management team, Oando
Energy Services Limited (OESL)
is a wholly owned indigenous
drilling company that operates in
Nigeria. With the acquisition of
five drilling rigs, construction of
mud plants in Onne and the huge
supply of drill bits all sourced
within the country, it has
demonstrated its commitment to
the National Content initiative of
the Federal Government. To
enhance its image and create
awareness of the support it has
given National Content initiative
to date, a team of OESL
Management paid a courtesy
visit to the Management of the
National Content Development
Division at the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation in Abuja.
It highlighted the strength of its
assets, its technical capability
as well as its management team.
This very impressive and
commendable presentation got
the attention of the NCD team and
they promised their
wholehearted support to OESL in
tackling some of the challenges
highlighted during the course of
the presentation.
Mr. Sola Falodun led the OESL
team comprising Dr. Olushola
Ismail, Samuel Umeh while
Olasunmbo Olajubu provided
necessary business
communication support.
Oando Sponsors Ohada International Conference
Organization of
Harmonization of
Business Laws in Africa
(OHADA) held its international
conference and book
Cub Victoria Island, Lagos.
The objective was to create
awareness and bring knowledge
of Ohada’s Laws to the
doorsteps of all stakeholders
whose businesses cut across
borders in Africa.
Oando participated in this
conference and book launch at
a Platinum Sponsorship level to
show support and interest in
Oando Shared Services Centre Holds Retreat
Joseph Soalheira, an
Advisory Board Member
Shared Services
Organisation Network (SSON)
was invited from Australia to
facilitate a two-day retreat on
“Organisational Culture and
Change”. He has 10 years
experience in Shared Services
Management, including
extensive experience in the
design, set up and management
of Shared Services initiatives.
The retreat held at Victoria Crown
Plaza, 292B Ajose Adeogun
Street, Victoria Island.
The retreat focused on improving
the Shared Services knowledge
of the Shared Services team.
Corporate governance, process
management, best practices
and performance to achieve
maximum efficiency in a shared
service organisation were also
some of the key topics
discussed.
He acknowledged the
innovative and pioneering
attitude of Oando in inculcating
best practices and adoption of
a Shared Services Centre.
It was a rewarding and insightful
experience for all the attendees
as it focused on sound
principles on the rudiments of
operating a world class Shared
Services which includes
challenges, risks and
continuous improvement on
current trends in a fast growing
company like Oando.
Ethics of Corporate Loyalty
Oando Marketing limited is
the nation’s leading oil
retailer, with one in every
five litres of petroleum products
being sold or distributed by
Oando via its 500 retail outlets
and strategically located
terminals, we have continuously
ensured products supply and
availability in Nigeria and West
Africa.
Reading this on the intranet and
in the pages of newspapers
gave me satisfaction and almost
a feeling of complacence about
our position in the petroleum
marketing industry. However I
have noticed a rather unusual
trend among staff of the
company which I must admit I
used to be guilty of.
A simple question I would like to
put to everyone is how many of
us ensure that our cars and
generators are fueled with petrol
(PMS) or diesel (AGO) and
engine oil (the Oleum Range)
from Oando filling stations, that
our cookers burn from gas (LPG)
provided by Oando, that the
insecticide that we use at home
is Oando insecticide. If your
answer to the above is yes then
my next question would be how
many of us ensure that members
of our families, our neigbours our
friends use all these products.
The truth about this, is that staff
of Oando Plc should form our
baseline strategy to help market
our Company and the products
that it offers. I mean if we don’t
believe in using our products
how can we convince other
people to use our products.
Truly we should not really be
trying to convince staff to do this,
it only just follows that all staff
should and must patronize
Oando products, after all, this is
where we get our means of
livelihood, it is only fair that we
show our loyalty by investing
back into the Company, by not
only patronizing its products but
also ensuring that we as a matter
of fact convince every member
of our family, friends, neigbours
and indeed everyone we come
in contact with to patronize
Oando products. Doing this is
only indicative of the passion
which we have for our
organisation.
Now lets do a quick arithmetic;
as of 2008 there were 431
employees in Oando, supposing
each person has a car and uses
on the average about N6000 a
week to fuel their car, this
translates to a guaranteed
annual income of N 134,
472,000.00 (whao!) and that is
just from staff of Oando Plc! the
multiplier effect when we add
potential sales to family members
friends, neighbour’s etc will
certainly add to more income for
the company, and this is only
from PMS sale.
It is certainly a sorry sight when
we see an Oando employee
patronizing products of
competitor companies, it does
not send the right message to the
consuming public and certainly
does not portray our Company in
the right light. I urge all Oando
employees to ensure that they
form part of the marketing force
of our Company by patronizing
our products and convincing
friends and family to do same.
