<strong>MSc</strong> <strong><strong>the</strong>sis</strong><br />

<strong>Research</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Agroscope</strong> <strong>and</strong> Innov<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Swiss cropping sector<br />

Introduction<br />

Agricultural production in general <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> cropping sector in particular face large challenges worldwide.<br />

Globalis<strong>at</strong>ion increases competition through markets’ linkages. The concentr<strong>at</strong>ion process of<br />

food supply chains have trans<strong>for</strong>med <strong>the</strong> production-driven chains to consumers-driven chains. Consumers’<br />

dem<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> habits are steadfastly changing. Resources are getting scarier. Agricultural<br />

producers in <strong>the</strong> South <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> North have to constantly adapt to new framework conditions to remain<br />

competitive, hence to be innov<strong>at</strong>ive.<br />

<strong>Agroscope</strong> is <strong>the</strong> leading agricultural research institution in Switzerl<strong>and</strong>. Its mission is to gener<strong>at</strong>e solutions<br />

th<strong>at</strong> can be transferred to farmers <strong>and</strong> adopted by <strong>the</strong>m in order to allow <strong>the</strong>m to remain competitive.<br />

It has initi<strong>at</strong>ed three research programs: AgriMontana, NutriScope <strong>and</strong> ProfiCrops. The aims<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se programs is to promote inter- <strong>and</strong> transdisciplinary as well as inter-institutions research <strong>and</strong><br />

boost agricultural research <strong>and</strong> rein<strong>for</strong>ce communic<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Objective of <strong>the</strong> research program<br />

The overall objective of ProfiCrops is contribute to <strong>the</strong> competitiveness of <strong>the</strong> Swiss plant production<br />

sector in a more <strong>and</strong> more liberalized economic environment by developing <strong>and</strong> transferring new<br />

products <strong>and</strong> methods to <strong>the</strong> crop producers. The program is structured in various topics, one of which<br />

is innov<strong>at</strong>ion. This so-called module aims <strong>at</strong> rein<strong>for</strong>cing <strong>the</strong> innov<strong>at</strong>ion process within <strong>Agroscope</strong> cropping<br />

research. The first activity is to map <strong>the</strong> products, <strong>the</strong> production <strong>and</strong> research methods th<strong>at</strong> have<br />

been developed <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> cropping sector within <strong>Agroscope</strong>. This mapping will <strong>the</strong>n serve as a basis <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>mul<strong>at</strong>ion of an innov<strong>at</strong>ion str<strong>at</strong>egy.<br />

Objectives of <strong>the</strong> <strong><strong>the</strong>sis</strong><br />

- Identify <strong>and</strong> map innov<strong>at</strong>ions (products, production <strong>and</strong> research methods) developed by<br />

<strong>Agroscope</strong><br />

- Innov<strong>at</strong>ion portfolio analysis of <strong>Agroscope</strong><br />

- Make recommend<strong>at</strong>ions on <strong>the</strong> innov<strong>at</strong>ion process within <strong>the</strong> cropping sector in Switzerl<strong>and</strong><br />

- Present <strong>the</strong> results <strong>at</strong> <strong>Agroscope</strong><br />

Methodology <strong>and</strong> activities<br />

- Review of <strong>the</strong> liter<strong>at</strong>ure (innov<strong>at</strong>ion, agriculture, research)<br />

- Define <strong>the</strong> sampling method (media communic<strong>at</strong>ion paper, public<strong>at</strong>ions (output tool), …)<br />

- Define characteriz<strong>at</strong>ion’s criteria <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> products <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> methods: radical vs incremental;<br />

adopter of innov<strong>at</strong>ion (farmer, processor, consumer,…), social, environmental <strong>and</strong> economical<br />

impacts, low vs high value crops, adoption r<strong>at</strong>e, etc.<br />

- Bil<strong>at</strong>eral interviews with relevant research fellows <strong>at</strong> <strong>Agroscope</strong> ACW, ART <strong>and</strong> ALP<br />

- Analyze <strong>the</strong> innov<strong>at</strong>ion portfolio of <strong>Agroscope</strong> <strong>for</strong> plant production<br />

- Make recommend<strong>at</strong>ions on <strong>the</strong> innov<strong>at</strong>ion process<br />

- Report <strong>the</strong> results (written report <strong>and</strong> oral present<strong>at</strong>ion)<br />

Expected output<br />

- <strong>Research</strong> report (<strong>and</strong> <strong>MSc</strong>)<br />

- Oral present<strong>at</strong>ion of results <strong>and</strong> recommend<strong>at</strong>ions to ProfiCrops research staff<br />

- Article in “Recherche Agronomique Suisse” (with co-authors)
