The ÖZIV has been representing the matters of concern of people
with special needs and/or disabilities in Austria since 1962. As a
recognised and competent representation of interest, the ÖZIV
promotes and supports people with disabilities in all matters to
the greatest possible extent.
The ÖZIV fights for people with disabilities and their right to lead
an autonomous and equal life.
The ÖZIV and its work are substantially influenced and supported
by the special needs of people with disabilities. The ÖZIV’s
principles “Help to help yourself – empowerment” and “Help by
afflicted people – peer counselling” are lived on all levels and are
the most fundamental values and orientation.
Freeing disabilities from taboos in the public – more selfconfidence
for people with disabilities
Working in relevant fields of education and information, the ÖZIV
supports a change of paradigm towards high esteem and a
positive attitude. This means more understanding for people with
special needs and/or disabilities as members of our association.
The ÖZIV-events (f.ex. “ÖZIV-Aktionstage”) facilitate a coming
together of people with and without disabilities and give them the
chance to get to know each other in the course of a common
experience – the experience disability (f.ex. by a change of
perspective experienced when sitting in a wheelchair)
Support and consulting in the business world – affordable
and needs-oriented offers for consumers
The ÖZIV offers expert knowledge – f.ex. a sensitisation training
for employees. Since autumn 2006, ÖZIV has trained equality
consultants – whose scope of work it is to offer information about
the legal situation (the law on the equality of people with
disabilities, Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz), but foremost to
demonstrate realistic solutions concerning the structural facilities
as well as to further support companies regarding necessary
adaptations.

Diversity – to recognise variety as a benefit – more
employment possibilities for people with disabilities
Since 2002, the ÖZIV has been offering nation-wide professional
consulting and coaching with its SUPPORT-project for those
people with disabilities whose aim it is to succeed in a job-wise
integration. This is based on the principle of “peer counselling”
(80% of the employees here are themselves people with special
needs) – This made the ÖZIV reach its goals: to create working
places according to the abilities and qualifications of people with
disabilities.
