YOUR
NEWSLETTER!
Hi you lot.
Just a few bits and pieces to help me to help you!
The newsletter over the last few months has changed and grown and I hope you all like the
improvements.
I have been contacted over a few things concerning the newsletter and to clear a few things up for
those who have asked.
Getting the best and viewing the PDF Newsletter on a Windows Operating System.
Firstly make sure you have a PDF viewer on your computer the most common downloaded viewer
is Adobe Reader and can be downloaded free at http://www.adobe.com/ and you should pick the
one to use on your version of Windows.
There are other readers which should have the same facilities .
Secondly when you receive the E-mail
double click on the it should open in the
Adobe reader.
When open click on view then go down
to page display then click to put a tick
next to two pages view and also tick
show cover page in two page view and
then you should be viewing the
newsletter as it should be read, then
open in full screen.
This might sound complicated but it will
enhance your viewing and it becomes
second nature to set.
Sending in Reports to the Newsletter.
The E-mail address to send reports to is scout.news01@talktalk.net
Closing date for material to be added to the newsletter for the next newsletter is the 25th of the
month and in certain circumstances later if permission is received.
When sending input in please try to use Arial font regular size 10.
Please check spelling and proof read also.
Please send photos in to correspond with your article if possible as a picture says a thousand
words!
To those who don,t receive the E-mail Newsletter
The newsletter is circulated by a list given to me which I will be updating soon .
The Newsletter should be for people in Scouting or certain other people.
The Newsletter for example is sent to District Cub Leader who then sends it to his Cub group
leaders who should then send it to ACSL,s etc so the Newsletter is monitored and distributed and
vetting is done by the right people.
So if you do not receive the newsletter on a regular basis ask the correct person to include you on
there mailing list.
The Newsletter is also available at http://ormskirkscouts.org.uk/ our District Website.
Thanks and please contact me if there are any other queries.
Peter
OUR DC!
The darks nights are now up on us, meaning winter is just around the corner. This shouldn’t mean that you
are confined to your HQ’s but should be getting out and about. Just remember to keep safe, let your GSL
know all your plans, appoint a leader in charge, ensure you have a home contact system in place, that risk
assessments have been done and that parents have all the details.
Its been a busy month, with lots going on. Bagpacking at the being of October raised £352 for the Mayoress
Charity. Thanks to Fellowship Helen Broady, Pat Sewell, Sue Cropper, to Jim Aldridge, Liz and Madeleine
Roberts, Jackie Gosson, Paul Britton, Ian Goldstraw, Hugh Miller and the Bubblefactor Explorers who all
turned out to pack.
I know some of you took part in County Splash and Dash. We had Scout Backwoods Cooking at Rufford
organised by Alan Martland. District Orienteering was organised by Peter and Norman Hall, won by 9thA
Scouts, 29 th C Cubs and 53 rd B Beaver. Well done to you all, results can be found later in the newsletter,
thanks to Peter and Norman for organising the event for us.
The District Ball at Briars Hall had 105 all dressed in their finery. Thanks to Paul and Chris for organising that
for us. Some of you also supported the Mayoress Charity at the Aughton Male Voice Choir concert which
was a lovely night, then the following day we ran the Halloween Spooky Walk at Windmill Farm. Thanks
again to Liz and Madeleine Roberts for the horrible base they ran, to Margaret Fearn and daughter for Bob
Apples, Betty Knowles and Pam Hall for refreshments, Peter Hall for his big witches nose and spiders web
and Karen from 58 th who was dressed as a green witch and helped set up and made bats. We had a brilliant
day, thanks to Windmill Farm for looking after us so well.
Thoughts and prayers please for Ian Biggin who is just recovering from an operation, Ann & Eric whose son
Andrew is very poorly, to the family of a little Beaver from Halsall who lost his battle with cancer and anyone
else we know who may be suffering at this time.
Remembrance Sunday Nov 11 th
Its important that Scout groups support our service men and
women. There are parades throughout the District for all to
attend, with the main parade in Ormskirk, Burscough and
Skelmersdale. The Ormskirk parade will assemble at 9.30
outside St Anne’s church and finish at Civic Hall for
refreshments at 12.
Safety
All meetings, events and activities must have a leader in
charge who has responsibility for co-ordinating all adults and
young people.
Recent experience has shown that accidents can happen
when there isn't a leader clearly designated as being in
charge overall, or when that person makes an assumption
that other people are looking after safety issues. Responses
to accidents are also impaired in such circumstances.
The leader in charge is, simply put, the adult present at an
evening meeting, event or activity who has the role of co-ordinating the work of all adults towards delivering
the Programme in a safe manner. Scouting safely is not just about ensuring that risk assessments and safety
checks are conducted; all adults need to be clear on what they need to do and young people should be given
clear instructions, guidance or rules.
The leader in charge does not have to personally fill in every risk assessment; this can be done by someone
else in discussion with other adults. Nor do they have to give rules or guidance to either young people or
adults personally. Being the leader in charge is about being the person with an overview of safety in the
given situation.
It is an exciting time for Explorer Scouting! It celebrated its 10th birthday this
year and is the fastest growing section in the UK.
Here in Ormskirk, we have over 120 young people taking part in the wide
variety of activities our Explorer Units offer every week. From community work
to climbing to international opportunities, they get a chance to try it all.
So that we can continue to see the section grow and build on its successes, we
are now looking for someone to take on the challenge of leading Explorer
Scouting in Ormskirk into the future.
If you are good with people and interested in supporting other adults to
ensure we deliver excellent Scouting to our young people, then this could be
the role for you.
We know we have some amazing adults across our District, so if you are
SCOUT TO THE RESCUE!
How proud are we to hear about two of our scouts coming to the aid of a lady
in distress. Tom Grainger a Scout at the 37th Ormskirk and his brother Jack a
former Scout at the 37th where in the right place at the right time when they
came to the aid of Mrs Rose from Ormskirk.
It appears that on Saturday 7th October, Mrs Rose who is 82 was driving
carefully along Black Moss Lane when a Range Rover came over the bridge
towards her and the only way she could avoid it was to swerve and her car
hit a lamp post and ended up in a ditch at the side of the road. Fortunately
Tom 13, a Chief Scout Gold Awardee was passing with his brother Jack 16
and came to her aid, the car was badly damaged and unstable on its side
and in danger of rolling, Mrs Rose was of course in distress and more so that
she could not open the door, Tom calmly reassured her and managed to
force open her door and free her from the car and take her to a more safe
area and emergency services were called. Mrs Rose was taken to hospital
and thankfully suffered no injuries but was shaken up by the incident.
Although the driver of the other vehicle stopped to check if she was ok she
left the scene leaving no details, the police are trying to trace the driver of the
Range Rover at the time we received this story, Jack was commended by the
police for his help in this incident.
The newsletter only heard of this incident after Anne Gilham from the 37th
answered a phone call from Mrs Rose who wished for Tom to have some
recognition for the help he gave her, Anne also added “We are in the middle
of a 6 week rotation program with the Scouts and two of the weeks are being
spent either learning or in the case of the Chief Scout Gold Scouts –
refreshing their First Aid skills and this was obviously of help in this situation.
Mrs Rose was quoted to have said “Young people these days get such a bad
press and this just shows how good some are, Tom was marvelous”.
Tracy Grainger Jack and Toms mother said “ We have been in contact with
Mrs Rose and she has sent us a thank you letter, I am very glad to hear they
helped Mrs Rose and I am really proud of them both”.
Sue Goldstraw DC was told of Tom and Jacks act and commented “Being there at the right time and having
the common sense and knowledge to act fast has certainly helped in this situation. Tom is a credit to his
group and you should all be very proud of him and Jack”.
Whilst gathering some information on the story the last words must come from Tracy Grainger who came
out with a statement which is very poignant in a way she said “My two boys are both typically scruffy
teenagers. Tom has long untidy hair and Jack is permanently on his phone ! Not the stereotype most
people would expect to come to your rescue. How wrong they are !
We all wish Mrs Rose a speedy recovery and to Tom and Jack a big well done from us all!
GUY WHO?
1st Ormskirk scouts made three guys before half term. The scouts brought old clothing, newspaper, and
other bits and pieces. One of the scouts wanted one the guys to look like him, so he decided to bring his
scout hoody and use it for the guy. To finish of the night the lads made Egyptian mummies.
pictures are taken by Charles Holland.
OUR LADYS HELPS
Charlie Coakley from Bubblefactor ESU in
Ormskirk and a former scout with the 42nd
Ormskirk (Skelmersdale) has secured his
place on this years County trip to Nepal with
the fantastic fund raising of his school.
A group of eleven 14 to 18 year old Scouts
from across Lancashire are travelling to Nepal
in December and returning in January giving
up their Christmas, whilst in Nepal the Scouts
will spend seven days in Sahara International
Helpless Children’s Home, Kathmandu
participating in humanitarian activities and they
will then spend the remainder of the trip
enjoying adventurous activities.
Charlie has been raising funds by bag packs
and other fund raisers but his school has
pulled out all the stops in fulfilling his quest !
Mr Smart headteacher had this to say,“Our Lady
Queen of Peace is proud of its distinctive ethos which is based on the Gospel values. Our Mission Statement
‘In Christ We Grow’ asks our learners to put Christ at the centre of all that they do in an environment where
caring, sharing and achieving are the norm.
We believe Charlie has fully embraced this Mission Statement throughout his time at Our Lady’s, by being
willing to be involved in all aspects of school life and by being helpful and caring in the local and wider
community. In particular his selfless attitude to helping others is remarkable and he is an inspiration to us all.
As well as being a learner at Our Lady’s, Charlie and his family are also part of the local Catholic Parish in
Skelmersdale, and as such, Charlie has always exemplified what it means to live out the Gospel message in
the care and concern he has shown for others.
Charlie has been an excellent role model to other learners in our school. and helping him fundraise was an
essential way in which the whole school could support the work that he is undertaking in Nepal. Charlie has
presented in school assemblies and his words are a great example to others. He has opened minds to the
possibilities and opportunities which they can experience in helping others both now and in the future.
We, as a school, think that the scouting movement, of which Charlie is a part, gives young people great
opportunities to work together in achieving their goals and ambitions. Also, it can enable them to become
confident and self-disciplined, helping them to raise their self-esteem and fulfil their true potential in a similar
way to standards and goals we set for the learners in our school - Our Lady’s.
We wish Charlie and all those heading to Nepal our best wishes and prayers and the school looks forward to
hearing about his adventures on
his return.”
“Scouting gives young people
great opportunities to work
together in achieving their
goals and ambitions”
13

ONE OF OURS
Charlie was asked about his schools help and said “ When I told the school
I never imagined they would have done as much as they did and in such a
short time. They raised alot of money by doing cake sales and non-uniform
days and when I was presented with the check for £1300 towards my trip I
could not believe it !! I am forever grateful to the staff and learners from the
school for the work they have done to help me achieve my target and I
hope I will be able to fulfill the faith they have in me”
Sue Golstraw Ormskirk and District District Commissioner commented on
the schools help “ Charlie has worked hard to raise funds for the trip, and
has had a great deal of support from his school, Our Lady Queen of Peace
in Skelmersdale, the school had several different fundraisers and raised a fantastic amount towards the trip. Its
ROYAL REVIEW?
The Diamond Jubilee Ball
My Dear Loyal Subjects, I was delighted
to attend your Diamond Jubilee Ball in the
absence of my Grand-daughter in law
Kate (your Patron) who unfortunately was
washing her hair. I dug out my best
ermine, with which to grace your soiree,
but was somewhat surprised by the small
number of tiara’s being worn. I was really
tickled to come across this new idea of a
“Raffle?” fortunately my Lady in Waiting
Glenys and my Footman Mike were able
to talk me through this procedure.
As to my Loyal Prince Regent Colin – he went to a wine tasting instead of escorting me! Needless
to say, like Queen Victoria “I was NOT amused” - he is now in The Tower and I am meeting with my
Parliament about bringing back “Orf with his head!”
Yours regally
Elizabeth R
(Aka Sheila Prescott)
HQ UPDATE
Unfortunately we do not have a lot to report on this month as we are still waiting for the valuation report to
come in, this is a much larger task than normal as we are a charity and as a result many fine details have to
be sorted out for the report to be finalised and accepted by the charities commission. In the meantime we
have a couple of your committee members looking into the best use of our preliminary design concept
particularly as we attended the Grand Opening of the Fylde’s newly rebuilt Scout HQ. This is a magnificent
building and a very fine achievement in the time scale they had, we have learned a lot from this visit that will
save us time and more importantly money. It is a much larger building than we plan on and can
accommodate 52 people in rather fine rooms should you ever get the chance to stay there take it you will
enjoy.
Colin Prescott
AND FINALLY
Hi All
Firstly a fantastic story about Tom Grainger, I have said this before but I will say this again as parents we try
to nurture are children to be good rounded people and with your help as well they can be, in Toms case for
example with his parents influence and with the first aid courses, team and confidence building of Scouts he
came to the aid of Mrs Rose would he have done if he did not have these influences? He probably would but
it makes you think.
You may never know if you have made a difference in a child’s life!
I was brought up when a trip to the head-teachers office always meant trouble, times have changed when
they give you a cheque,ha hah. what a great help OLQP have done to Charlie’s fund raising.
We all have felt the pinch lately but I am always surprised as to how much the general public give to charities
even when they haven't got it to give for example also at the recent bag packs, moto-fest etc.
Anyway I’m back to the decorating now funny that I have two scouts in the house but no help here!
