Vision of the School of Optometry:<br />

“The <strong>Indiana</strong> University School of Optometry will be at the leading edge of vision care <strong>for</strong> the<br />

people of the world.”<br />

Programmatic <strong>Mission</strong>:<br />

To educate and train individuals to be optometric technicians and opticians.<br />

Programmatic <strong>Goals</strong>:<br />

I. Teaching<br />

The overall goal <strong>for</strong> teaching is to develop a program recognized <strong>for</strong> excellence and innovation<br />

in opticianry and optometric technology.<br />

<strong>Objectives</strong>:<br />

To teach skills which enable graduates to be proficient in<br />

the optical theory and practice of ophthalmic dispensing<br />

ophthalmic lens fabrication<br />

ophthalmic testing techniques<br />

contact lens procedures<br />

business office procedures<br />

The knowledge of these skills is to be conveyed in a setting that is academically stimulating and<br />

clinically relevant.<br />

To encourage students to prepare <strong>for</strong> and take appropriate certification exams such as ABO,<br />

NCLE, CPOT or any mandatory state exams, and to achieve a greater than 90% pass rate.<br />

To encourage faculty to continue to develop current and innovative teaching materials.<br />

To foster the depth of understanding and abilities needed so that the graduate is capable of<br />

providing instruction in ophthalmic related academic programs, in industry and in clinical<br />

practice.<br />

To anticipate a changing global market by developing new courses and modifying existing<br />

courses to meet and respond to technological challenges of the future.<br />

Continue to expand education and training in the area of dispensary, inventory and optical<br />

laboratory management.<br />

To expand curricular offerings to allow <strong>for</strong> distributed education.<br />

To offer continuing education to enhance the skill of individuals employed in the ophthalmic<br />

industry.


II. Clinics<br />

To provide students with the clinical experience needed to develop competence in patient care by<br />

working with a diverse and varied patient population.<br />

<strong>Objectives</strong><br />

Each student will demonstrate proficiency in pre-clinical skills be<strong>for</strong>e entering the clinic.<br />

Each student will complete a clinical rotation in a minimum of four different <strong>Indiana</strong> University<br />

School of Optometry clinics by graduation.<br />

Each student will complete 450 clock hours of clinical experience by graduation.<br />

By graduation, each student will complete a minimum number of clinical tasks as determined by<br />

the program faculty in all relevant areas of learning.<br />

To encourage optician/technician students to participate in the opportunities available at IU’s<br />

Guanajuato, Mexico clinic.<br />

III. Optical Teaching Laboratory<br />

To provide students with the optical laboratory experience needed to develop competency in the<br />

fabrication of a diversity of spectacle lens prescriptions.<br />

<strong>Objectives</strong><br />

All students taking the Optical Laboratory Concentration will complete 252 hours in surfacing,<br />

finishing and optical laboratory procedures required <strong>for</strong> the efficient function of an optical<br />

laboratory.<br />

To assure the teaching facility is equipped with state of the art, technologically advanced<br />

ophthalmic equipment.<br />

IV. Physical Plant<br />

To provide students with a pleasant, environmentally safe learning environment that has both<br />

basic and state-of-the-art equipment in sufficient quantity to foster maximum learning.<br />

<strong>Objectives</strong><br />

To eliminate hazardous waste and to reduce non-hazardous waste to the minimum levels<br />

economically and technically practical, and to be in full compliance with all federal/state safety<br />

and environmental standards.<br />

To replace and update equipment so that our teaching facility reflects the standards <strong>for</strong> state-ofthe-art<br />

ophthalmic laboratories and practices.


V. Student Affairs<br />

To enroll a full class of students with a diversity of backgrounds and assure that upon graduation<br />

they are appropriately prepared <strong>for</strong> and successfully placed within the ophthalmic marketplace.<br />

<strong>Objectives</strong><br />

To enroll 25 new optician/technician students per year in the Associate of Science degree<br />

program.<br />

To encourage the growth of the optician/technician scholarship fund available to Associate of<br />

Science degree optician/technician students.<br />

To maintain the representation of minority and international students at a minimum of 10% in<br />

each entering class.<br />

To maintain 100% placement within the ophthalmic marketplace <strong>for</strong> those desiring immediate<br />

employment.<br />

To maintain a web-based repository of placement in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> graduating students and<br />

alumni.<br />
