Calendar
School Contacts
The calendar tells us that it is spring but the weather seems to
disagree. Never the less, it is May and we are swily approaching
the end of May, which means senior recognions, prom, final
exams and graduaon. This is the me of the year to celebrate
our successes, replenish our resources and build for the future.
Speaking of our future we will soon be welcoming our incoming class of freshmen,
the Class of 2017. This class will have big shoes to fill as their predecessors are very
accomplished in academics, acvies and athlecs. Five short years ago, 255 students
took the ACT and had an average score of 19.8. Last year 530 students took the ACT
and averaged 20.8. Five years ago 90 students were enrolled in AP classes and took
114 AP exams. This year 243 students took 335 AP exams. We already have 345
students in AP classes next year with the capacity to take 455 AP exams, quite the
accomplishment for our students, staff and our school community.
On a personal note, I will be returning home in a sense, to Iowa, where I have accepted
a Superintendent’s posion. I feel exceponally privileged to have served as Principal
of a “World Class” school with “World Class” students and staff. My experiences here
will endure throughout my career wherever it may lead me and I am thankful for my
me here at OEHS and grateful for the people I have met and worked with.
As we put this school year to bed, we are already embarking on plans to improve
moving forward. This has been a me for reflecon and planning for acon. There are
several new programs and many new faces to go along with a new look and feel of our
building. The 2013‐2014 school year is something to look forward to and I encourage
you to embrace the forthcoming opportunies.
Thank you for your connued commitment and dedicaon to OEHS and the enre
Oswego community. With your nonstop support, OEHS will connue to improve and
will no doubt be recognized as a “WORLD CLASS” school!
Held on May 22nd, the last Pep Assembly of the year
was full of fun and recognition to all student teams, clubs
and organizations for their great performance during their
spring events and activities. The assembly began with
members of the jazz choir Spotlight performing the
national anthem followed by the band playing the schools
fight song.
A variety of games where students and teachers
competed against each other was, as always, a crowd
favorite! The events included: pull the tissue, blow the cup,
cookie stacking, dodge ball, hoola hoop and fill the cup.
The following clubs and teams were recognized for
their efforts:
Baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys’ and girls’ track,
bass fishing, boys’ and girls’ volleyball, Robotics Team,
Rocket Club, SLIP Team, Government Club, NAHS,
On Thursday, April 11th, parents attended a presentation "Conquering College Costs" given
by Frank Palmasani, a respected author and speaker in the field of financial aid, on how to
choose a college based on affordability. Based on survey results, the presentation was well
received and very informative. The presentation and hand-outs can be found on the Student
Service webpage under the financial aid category.
On Tuesday, April 23rd, Student Service Staff and OEHS Student Council members
welcomed approximately 250 eighth grade students and their parents to take part in a
"Welcome to the Pack" event. Students played games orchestrated by Student Council
while parents learned how to stay involved at the high school level. A speaker from
Career Vision also presented on how to start a career conversation with your student. By
the end of the night, 8th grade students from Bednarcik, Murphy and Plank Junior High
gathered together to form a conga line around the gym. A good time was had by all!
Congratulations to the 2012-13 SLIP 1 and 2 students on another successful year!
The Student Leadership Initiative Program (SLIP) is a leadership training
Plano and Sandwich. The Kendall County Outdoor Education Center (KCOEC)
is the primary agency that directs and supervises the program. SLIP 1 includes
5 sophomore students who are chosen from a group of applicants at the
beginning of each school year. SLIP 2 consists of SLIP 1 students interested in
further applying their leadership skills during their junior year of high school. The students have worked
hard this year and spent time focusing on communication skills, leadership, creative problem solving,
planning, trust, responsibility, cooperation, and service to the community. If you would like more
information regarding the programs, please feel free to contact Brianne Kalusniak at
Looking for a Few Good Student Leaders
Oswego East will be starting a Freshmen Seminar Program next year during Guided Study.
This program will serve as an ongoing orientation process that enables freshmen to become
familiar with policies, procedures, programs, and traditions at
Oswego East as well as incorporate Social Emotional Learning into
their day. We are looking for positive, out-going, and responsible
juniors to apply to be a Freshmen Seminar Leader. They will gain
leadership experience, community service hours, and great
opportunities for resume building. Applications are available in
Student Services.
Attention Class of 2014
Once again Oswego East High School has selected Photography by Feltes to serve as
the senior portrait photographer to the Class of 2014. Many of the images in the
yearbook, both group and action shots are donated by Photograph by Feltes and for that
I ask you support them by having your senior portraits taken by them.
You are under no obligation to purchase portraits from Photography by Feltes, however
in order to appear in the yearbook you must at least have a yearbook session. There is
no charge for this service and if you book one of their sessions, it will include a yearbook
headshot.
Members of the Class of 2014 are strongly encouraged to setup their senior portrait session before school starts
in the fall. Only pictures taken by Photography by Feltes will be used in the senior section of the yearbook. If you
choose not to have your senior portraits taken by the studio you can call them and have a “yearbook only” session
at no charge. All studio sessions must be booked no later than September 30. Please contact the studio at
630-264-9900 to set up your appointment.
Student Council
The new Student Council Executive Board
was voted on for the 2013 -2014 school year. The new President is
Katelyn Sass, Vice President is Abigail Klick, Publicity Chair and
Historian is Alyssa Herndon, Community Service Chair is Rachel
Thoreson, and School Spirit Chair is Joe Sanchez. The first order of business for
the new board was to voted on the Homecoming theme for the next school year.
The theme chosen was “Masquerade” with the main colors of
Tiffany blue, violet, and silver. The biannual blood drive was
also a success by exceeding the donation goal by over 20
people. Student Council also held a teacher breakfast to
show appreciation for a great year. Looking forward, our
meetings will start in the first few weeks of the new school
year on every Monday.
OEHS Band News
The end of the year was highlighted by outstanding band
concerts in May. On May 8th, the Symphonic Band and
Wind Ensemble performed, and on May 9th, the Concert
Band and Wind Symphony performed. The second
evening of concerts also featured the Plank Junior High
8th grade band. During both evenings, seniors received recognition plaques.
On May 15th, the OEHS Band Boosters sponsored a Fays
BBQ Fundraiser. The event was an extreme success, with
several tickets bought before the event as
well as many meals purchased the evening
of the BBQ. At the end of the evening, two
students (Sarah Dvorak and Julia Clayton)
had a chance to throw a piece in Mrs. O'Neill's and Ms. Tuttle's face.
Thank you to the several students and adults who helped during the
evening.
Choir Notes
What a way to end a wonderful year for
Oswego East’s Choral Department!
When a call was made for former Plank Junior
High Choir members to attend Plank’s last concert
Plank Choir Alumni joined the 8th grade choir in
“Seasons of Love”
of the year, many of our students responded. On May 20th, they joined Plank Choir Alumni
of all ages to perform “Seasons of Love” with the 8th grade choir. It was certainly a great
experience for everyone involved.
All members of the Treble, Concert, Women’s and A Capella Choirs along with Voice
Activated and Spotlight Jazz Choir showcased their talents at the Choir Concert on May
21st. With more that 25 songs, this was certainly a night to remember. Especially for the
seniors from all choirs, who joined in singing “And Wherever You Go”.
Then, on May 22nd, Spotlight join the singers of the future in the annual
Elementary Choir Festival. The same day, some
members of Spotlight, performed the National
Anthem in the opening of the last Pep Assembly
of the school year.
A Capella Choir singing “The Argument”
From Mrs. Cannavino’s Biology Class
Students in Mrs. Cannavino's Biology class have
been incorporating the Next Generation Science
Standards and common core by studying cell division
and differentiation using a common freshwater flatworm
known as Planaria. In fact, it's the same flatworm that
scientists around the world use for their studies of stem cells and cell
signaling. The worms are approximately .32 cm in length (1/8 inch).
Students removed the head and tail of the living worm under the microscope
and watched as the stem cells differentiated into the various structures to create three
new complete worms. To some student's surprise, some of their worm
fragments split themselves into even more worms, which is a natural means of
reproduction for this species. Therefore, some lab groups ended the
experiment with up to 5 new worms from their original. Using special
equipment for microscopic surgery, scientists can actually cut these worms
into over 250 pieces and regenerate more than 250 worms from 1 original
worm. Through research and collaboration, students analyzed their nine days
worth of data and observations to hypothesize about the location of the stem
cells (known as the stem cell niche) based on the amount of time each piece
took to regenerate.
