PORTAGE VALLEY February Events The Willows Fine Dining Friday, February 15th Reminiscent of the former Willows in Toledo, <strong>Otterbein</strong> recreates the considerate, leisurely hospitality created a half a century ago by the Skaff family. The restaurant set a standard against which all others are measured. Chef Reggie and his staff will—for one night– open the doors of the OPV “Willows”. Space is limited and reservations are required. This concert will be held in our auditorium and will surely please the musical taste of everyone in attendance. Ramblings and Rovings Happy New Year! Roll out the movie reels. Turning 40 and Silver Linings Playbook were two of the movies viewed by the dozen hardy souls who were ready to begin the New Year with one of their favorite pastimes. Our critics thought the rough language in the first movie could have been omitted for a more comfortable viewing. Silver Linings was a feel good adventure. Dining at “Max & Erma’s” was the usual good food and fellowship. Over a span of more than eight decades, the Kiemle-Hankins Company has been involved with mechanical and electrical energy. The company began in 1928 with the founding of an electric apparatus repair shop in downtown Toledo – initially known as the Kiemle Company about where the shortstop stands anytime there is a Mud Hens ballgame at 5/3rd Field! Portage Valley men visited the current site, across from Owens Community College in early January. According to Dean Rummele, the space was big enough just to drive in the OPV bus! The men were shown different sized motors, how the wire is wound in the motors. They repair motors from 1 – 38,000 horse power; dishwasher – who knows what has the largest motor? Another unit also repairs multiple sized breakers. Some of the technicians work on site, but there are also others who jump in the truck and go to a site to begin their repair for 24 x 7 x 365 Emergency Services. This truly provided education for our men. January’s Pemberville Opera House showcased The Black Pearl, the swashbuckling nautical adventure, starring Douglas Fairbanks. This silent film made history as one of the first full features shot entirely in Technicolor. Fairbanks plays a nobleman who wants to revenge his father's murder and boards a pirate vessel disguised as one of the villainous rapscallions, and sets about achieving his goal. On the high seas, the athletic actor provides a rip-roaring, stunt-filled voyage -- complete with a one-man takeover of a merchant ship. Even though the audience marveled at the contrast with current movies, even more exciting was the piano accompaniment by Lynne Long. She played, non-stop for nearly one hour and twenty minutes in the style of the silent movies. A true professional was Ms. Long. This was a first time experience for many of the OPV residents. Elaine Mollencopf Jeffrey Pollock conducted the Toledo Symphony with their Family Series concert, On Pointe with the Toledo Ballet. The music was all fit for a dance: from Offenbach’s “Can-Can”, to a lyric Mozart tune, Stravinsky’s “Variation of the Firebird” from The Firebird and “Galop” by Shostakovich. We all had a ballet lesson from members of The Toledo Ballet who danced “Chocolat” (the Spanish Dance) from The Nutcracker and ended the program with “Waltz of the Flowers.” Thanks to the Marketing Department for the tickets. Dining at Dyers lacked some of the sparkle of other visits to the Bowling Green eatery. Experiences of everyone were varied and the group wished more than one person could have been serving them. Maybe the flu bug had caught them shorthanded. The price was right for admission and popcorn and beverages at the Maumee Indoor Theatre for a Wednesday Matinee. Cloud Atlas was the movie exploring how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future. Some weren’t ready for this type of movie, but others were satisfied with their experience in this attractive restored theatre. After our press deadline, ladies will have lunch at Maumee Bay State Park and maybe do some shopping there or in Oregon at the lighthouse shop. We’ll include all the excitement in our next issue.
