Many of the utility programs also require homeowners to add more insulation to obtain the rebate. Attic, wall and, in some cases, under floor insulation must be added to get the utility rebate on new double pane windows or a high efficiency gas furnace and water heaters. For 2011 as an example, the Federal Tax Credit is 10% up to $200 for windows and skylights and 10% up to $500 for exterior doors. This compares to the $1500 offered in 2009 when Obama signed the credit into law. While the credit isn’t as large as in 2009, homeowners that have yet to use their credit now have only a month and a half to take advantage of the program. No details have been released as to what is planned for 2012 in regards to tax credits. With 2012 being an election year, and the economy still not recovering, who can say what will come from Washington? No one can deny the benefits these programs have provided over the last few years. Millions of dollars are being saved by homeowners on their energy bills and the utilities are saving many more millions. It is cheaper for the utilities to provide <strong>November</strong> 2011 21 homeowners and businesses rebate dollars for increasing the efficiency of their homes/buildings rather than having to search for new energy sources. Environmental issues aside, dams and power plants are expensive and no one wants one in their backyard.
