Students who successfully complete the<br />

Basic <strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Officer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> are eligible<br />

to take the Ohio Basic <strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Officer</strong><br />

Certification examination.<br />

Student who successfully complete the<br />

Basic <strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Officer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> and selected<br />

courses from the Criminal Justice Degree<br />

Technology program will receive the<br />

associate degree.<br />

All students should check for<br />

prerequisites for a class before<br />

registering. Prerequisites can be<br />

found in the Course Descriptions,<br />

beginning on page 330 of this<br />

<strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Officer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>Option</strong><br />

Courses in bold are offered as credit hour courses<br />

and credited to the Criminal Justic Tech program<br />

with the <strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Officer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>Option</strong>.<br />

<strong>Owens</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> students who have<br />

completed the Basic Police <strong>Officer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> may<br />

receive up to 18-21 college credits toward the<br />

associate degree in Criminal Justice.<br />

Credit Transfer<br />

Some courses for credit in the basic academy do<br />

not count toward a degree, but are required for<br />

certification in the <strong>Academy</strong>. Courses for credit<br />

toward the associate degree are in bold print in<br />

the course list to the left. Students transferring<br />

from another law enforcement academy or<br />

college may receive 18-21 credit hours.<br />

Dual enrollment requirements<br />

Students who plan to attend the Basic <strong>Peace</strong><br />

<strong>Officer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> and work toward an associate<br />

degree must notify the School of Public Safety<br />

and Emergency Preparedness Chair and the <strong>Peace</strong><br />

<strong>Officer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> Commander well in advance of<br />

registering for first-semester classes. The <strong>Academy</strong><br />

has special admission requirements that must be<br />

addressed and met. <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>Option</strong> students<br />

must complete a physical examination and a<br />

background investigation prior to being admitted.<br />

Once approved by the <strong>Academy</strong> Commander,<br />

students may be excused from certain course<br />

prerequisites and co-requisites in the degree<br />

program. Some courses must be taken in a<br />

specific sequence and within specific time frames.<br />

Course specifications<br />

Courses listed in the credit transfer section<br />

taken in accordance with the Basic <strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Officer</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> may be credited to the Associate of<br />

Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice.<br />

But students taking degree program courses,<br />

who later apply for the <strong>Academy</strong> Program, will<br />

have to repeat courses from the degree program<br />

in the <strong>Academy</strong>. Students failing to make the<br />

necessary notifications, or who later drop out of<br />

the academy option, are required to comply with<br />

degree program requirements. Students who<br />

are undecided are advised to take the General<br />

Education courses listed in the degree program<br />

until they have made a decision.<br />

Certification<br />

Students successfully completing the Basic<br />

<strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Officer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, the required physical<br />

conditions testing and the courses listed to the<br />

right will receive the associate degree and be<br />

eligible to take the Ohio Basic <strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Officer</strong><br />

Certification examination. 1
