SP Plus by Nagel is the solution to this problem: It gives brochure spines a finishing that enhances

application: Offline, it can be
used as a mobile finishing unit,
as online version installed directly
behind the Foldnak 8, it represents
a fast and reliable inline
solution. The SP Plus Online can
be integrated at any time into an
existing Nagel bookletmaking
system.
The unit can process brochures
of up to 30 pages and formats
of up to 350 mm x 250 mm. If
the booklet spines are pressed
once, the SP Plus achieves an
output of up to 1,200 sets per
hour offline, and up to 1,500
sets per hour online.

Digital printing with finishing equipment offers
new perspectives
By taking the step into digital printing, the Carl Ziegler printing house in Neckarbischofsheim in the
Southwest of Germany has not just expanded its range of services, but also made an important
decision for the future of this long-established business, according to managing director Joachim Bloss.
The customers in industry and commerce know what
to expect from the Carl Ziegler printing house. For
more than 125 years, this company has stood for
excellent quality. The customers’ trust is a mark of
distinction, but it also obliges the company to keep its
knowledge and technology up to date. Hence, the
printing house reacted to customer demands and the
development of the printing market by investing in a
digital press – Xerox Docucolor 6060 – and in the
matching peripherals for finishing. Joachim Bloss, who
represents the 5th generation directing the family
business, is convinced that building up a complete
digital printing department is an important step in
ensuring the company’s future growth and success.
Ernst Nagel GmbH and Printdata GmbH ably supported
Joachim Bloss in introducing his company to the digital
printing market. They developed a customised business
concept that includes suitable finishing solutions.
Now, Carl Ziegler can produce customer-specific
brochures, personalised letters, etc. in excellent digital
quality and give these products a high-quality finish
with the equipment provided by Nagel. Personalisation,
customized run lengths and last-minute changes call
for a high degree of flexibility. Only with appropriate
finishing equipment, which must meet special requirements
in this area of application, can printers use the
benefits of time and flexibility in digital printing to full
advantage.
For bookletmaking, the company decided on the
Robo-Feeder, combined with the Foldnak 8 stapling
and folding machine and the Trimmer. With the bookletmaking
system, the prints can be collated, stapled,
folded, pressed and trimmed.
The specialised Robo-Feeder separates sets efficiently,
and its versatility enables printers to process even
highly specialised jobs at a profit. Developed specifically

for digital printers, the Robo-Feeder minimises the
inevitable manual labour involved in bookletmaking.
A sorter at the printer is unnecessary, since the Robo-
Feeder automatically separates the sheets on the pile
into sets. The feeder reliably processes brochures of
up to 100 pages and covers printed with digital and
offset equipment.
Features that support personalised printing
� Insertion of heavy cover sheets.
� Combination of black-and-white sheets with
coloured cover sheets.
� The optional mark reader ensures the correct
order and number of sheets.
� Suction and blast air units prevent marks on
sensitive digital prints during feeding.
Carl Ziegler also uses the Nagel bookletmaking system
to finish preliminary volumes of various annual reports
from the offset printing department.

The Docufold and the Auto-Rillnak are two other Nagel
units used at Carl Ziegler. The Docufold folding machine
is extremely easy to program and hence often used
for standard folding patterns. The Auto-Rillnak gently
creases brochure covers and digital prints for a professional
finish, turning out high-quality products that
meet even the exacting standards of regular customers
in the offset printing business.
According to Joachim Bloss, all Nagel machines are
suitable for small and frequently changing run lengths,
thanks to their short set-up time of 2-3 minutes at
most and their easy operation. Being able to perform
this service in-house, and to present the company as a
full-line provider, gives Carl Ziegler a competitive edge,
all the more so because the company has chosen to
market the digital printing service as a separate line of
business. Digital printing offers a multitude of technical
possibilities, especially on the ever-growing market of
personalised advertising media. This means that digital
printing, according to Bloss, does not compete with
small-format offset printing.
Bloss states that within the first three months of the
company’s official entry into the digital printing market,
Carl Ziegler acquired new customers, despite not
having exhausted all marketing possibilities. This step

has created a positive synergy effect for the company
and its customers. The company can provide both
digital and offset printing services to its customers,
keeping old customers coming back and acquiring
new customers in addition. Bloss has been very happy
with the customers’ response; after a mere two months,
the company had already processed 20,000 digital
impressions. If the new business segment continues
this positive development, the company’s initial aim
of 40,000 impressions seems absolutely realistic.

The optional drill bit cooling and lubrication system
ensures a gentle processing of sensitive stock. Heat
build-up is reduced to a minimum to prevent the
material sticking together. A combined use of both
functions increases the service life of the drill bits
many times over.
