From the President
Now that Ella and Laura are
five and three I thought we
had moved on from the
paraphernalia stage, when
going out involved lugging a
large nappy bag containing not only bottom
supplies but also toys, snacks, spare
clothes, phone, purse etc, etc Not so. We
have just started the girls on skis and
while it a great family activity it also
involves a great deal of paraphernalia. So
while Ian was having his turn at adult skiing
I was attempting to manage three pairs of
gloves plus hats, goggles and ski’s. It didn't
help that while on a chair lift Ella decided
her hands were too hot and the glove
tumbled onto the snow many meters below.
Perhaps therein lays an opportunity for
someone to invent gloves and hats that can
be attached by bungee cord to the ski suit.
Until they do I'll have to rely on my jacket
with many pockets. And the chest ones
stuffed with gloves are the closest I'll
ever get to large breasts so there are
advantages to everything!
Did you see Parents Centre at the Parent
and Child Show this weekend? The
feedback has been very positive. It seems
people’s main concern it that they are
unable to book onto childbirth education
classes because demand exceeds
availability. If you feel passionate about
this please make your voice heard either
by writing to the paper or your local MP.
We are again very keen to get some of you
wonderful people helping as liaison people
at our Childbirth Education classes. If it
was a great experience for you we'd love
you to share your time and experience with
our prospective parents. You don't need
any special knowledge, just a desire to give
something back by assisting our Educators
to provide great classes.
Roll on Spring!
Contribution......
Would you be interested in writing a story or
about your coffee group or other antenatal
group outing? We are collecting names of
people interesting in telling us about their
group for the rest of the year’s issues.
We have a few $10 Book
Vouchers to give to successful entries
From the Editor
Hello! Spring is almost upon us
and so I for one am hoping that
the weather starts to get a little warmer –
although not holding my breathe as when I
arrived here to live in September 2005
there was snow! Can’t believe that we have
been living here for 2 years now already –
where does the time go?
We’ve had a busy few months, George’s
nursery organised a photography
fundraiser so we booked a session &
managed to get our only photo of the 3 of
us to date! (See below!) We also had a
lovely shot of George on his own and we
know all our family in the UK will love
receiving a copy of both photo’s.
perhaps a thought for future courses? It
was a little scary going back over our
previous births & remembering all about
labour and then sleepless nights!! We hope
to schedule another of these courses for
early next year – speak to Cathy if you are
interested.
There is hopefully something for everyone
in this edition of the newsletter. So grab
yourself a cup of something warm and use
us as an excuse to take 30mins time out!
You can find out all about me on page 8 – in
our regular feature ‘Coffee with a Parents
Centre Volunteer’ – Happy Reading!
Our committee is in need of some new
members, we have lots of vacant positions
to fill, please see page we are a friendly
bunch!
Oh & don’t forget its Fathers Day on
September 2 nd !
Kay
P.S. Is there anyone out there who might
like to help produce the newsletters? With
the impending birth of baby no.2 in
November it will be a little tight to get the
November/December & January/February
editions produced. If you would be
interested in helping then please see the
advert below or call/email me & we can
discuss further.
I also attended the 3 week ‘Birth Second
Time Round’ course which was a great
course to attend. We had hoped both of us
could attend, but we couldn’t get a
babysitter on the days and so I went alone
– Thankfully I wasn’t the only one, many
people were in the same position – so
VACANCY - NEWSLETTER ASSISTANT
We are looking for someone to assist with
the production of the newsletter for a few
format and sending for printing. Call Kay on
337-6255 for more information
Rainy Day ideaÊs!
Play Dough
Play dough is fun and easy to make.
Children like to make it too – with help of
course!
Play dough helps to develop coordination in
fingers and hands and strengthens growing
muscles. Children can learn about
measuring, shapes, sizes, numbers and
weight. Your child will enjoy playing with
play dough, particularly if you make time to
sit and talk and talk and play too.
Squeezing, prodding and rolling play dough
is soothing and relaxing – and excellent on
a wet day!
Play Dough Recipe
3 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
About 1 cup of water
Mix together and knead until it feels
smooth. You may need to add a little
more flour or water to get it right!
You can add food colouring to the
water if you would like coloured play
dough.
10 FUN ÂRAINY DAYÊ OUTDOOR
IDEAS!
1. If it’s really pouring put a
container outside and check
with a ruler every now and
ten during the day to see
how much rain has fallen.
2. Write a letter to Grandma and
venture out in the rain to post it.
3. Gather up old crusts to feed the
hungry ducks.
4. Draw a picture on the concrete with
chalk and see how long the rain
takes to wash it away
5. See how many
snails and worms
you can find around
your garden and on
your paths.
6. Put on your gum boots & waterproofs
and go for a walk and
splash through all the
puddles
7. Wrap up warm and
brave the rain for a
walk to your nearest
café. Reward yourself
with a good coffee
and your kids with a fluffy,
8. Go for a blast along the beach,
watch the crashing surf and play
chasey with the waves as they roll
onto the beach.
9. Head out on your
bikes and look
for puddles to
ride through.
10. Look at flowers and plants with the
rain shining on them – you’ve
probably never notices how beautiful
they look.
FAMOUS QUOTE:
I am not finding pregnancy much of a joy. I
am afraid of childbirth, but I am afraid I
can't find a way of avoiding it.
Brigitte Bardot
TRUTHS ABOUT PARENTING
- A baby usually wakes up in the wee-wee
hours of the morning.
- A child will not spill on a dirty floor.
- A young child is a noise with dirt on it.
- An unbreakable toy is useful for breaking
other toys.
- Avenge yourself; live long enough to be a
problem to your children.
- Be nice to your kids, for it is they who
will choose your nursing home.
- God invented mothers because he
couldn't be everywhere at once.
- God invented guilt so mothers could be
everywhere at once.
- Having children will turn you into your
parents.
- If you have trouble getting your
children's attention, just sit down and look
comfortable.
- Insanity is inherited; you get it from your
A Date to
Remember!
FATHERS DAY!
Sunday September 3 rd 2007
It is said that the first Father's Day
celebration was conceived in Spokane,
Washington State, 1909. Sonora Louise
Smart Dodd, the daughter of Civil War
veteran William Smart, proposed a day to
honor fathers around the country. Her
father, who after the death of his wife
during childbirth in 1898, had raised her
and her 5 siblings alone. Inspired by this,
she wanted to let him, and the world, know
how special he was to her. The idea is said
to of come to her whilst listening to a
Mother's Day sermon.
By 1916 the idea had spread across the
country, and was even promoted by
President Woodrow Wilson. In 1956
Father's Day was recognised by a Joint
Resolution of Congress. It wasn't until
1966 that President Lyndon Johnson
proclaimed the third Sunday of every
June, the official Father's Day. Later in
1972 President Nixon established a
permanent national observation of the day.
The 19th of June 1910, Spokane
Washington, was originally when and where
the first Father's Day celebrations were
held, being in the home and birth month of
William Smart.
Harry C. Meek is also given credit for
founding the idea of Father's Day. A
President of a Chicago Lions Club, Meeks
gave speeches to various groups about the
need to honor fathers through out the
United States. In appreciation for his
work, the Lions Clubs of America
presented him with a gold watch,
with the inscription "Originator of
Father's Day," on his birthday, June
20, 1920.
Today, Father's Day is celebrated in
a number of countries around the
world, on different official dates.
New Zealand celebrates Father's
Day on the first Sunday of
September, the 3rd this year. The
white or red rose is the official
flower for Father's Day. Wearing a white
rose honors a father who is deceased and a
red rose for a father who is living.
• USA, UK, Canada and most parts of
the world - the third Sunday of June.
• Australia and New Zealand - the first
Sunday of September.
• Spain and Belgium - 19 March.
• Sweden - the second Sunday of
November
“ A man knows when he is growing old
because he begins to look like his
father."
Gabriel García Márquez (b. 1928),
Colombian writer
Things that Dad’s always say...
* When I was at school we had to walk
home in the snow!
* Go ask your mother!
* Just wait until I get you home!
* No of course I'm not crying - there's
something in my eye
* My father used to tell me...
* When I was your age....
Situations Vacant
Christchurch South Parents
Centre is totally run by
volunteers. Our committee has people
looking to move on other things, so we’re
looking for new joiners. Can you help?
TREASURER
We are looking for an enthusiastic, money
minded person to take over this role. Being
Treasurer takes up just a couple of hours a
week and simply involves managing the bank
account and reporting on the ins and outs
each month - which is probably what most
of us do for our own accounts already. You
also get to meet a great bunch of people on
our Committee for monthly meetings and
social outings. If you’d like to know more
please call Lisa, on 03 329-9969.
MOVING & MUCHING CO-ORDINATOR
class participants, contacting class
participants to remind them of the course,
organising class handouts, opening the
church and arranging seating, introducing
the speakers and organising supper.
Courses are held four times a year.
Perhaps you and a friend would like to
share the role. Please contact Angela on
322-9383 for more information.
BABY & YOU ASSISTANT
Would you like to help new parents in
caring for their babies? A second
volunteer is needed to assist with the Baby
and You Course, which is run on Thursday
mornings for 5 weeks each term, 4 courses
per year. If you are interested and would
like more information please contact,
Marilyn on 331-6270.
LP Liaison
Introduce LPs to venue, class structure
and list of tasks before during and after
class. Follow up any issues that they have
during class. Ensure their tasks are
completed in appropriate times.
Most tasks are actually management and
follow up of LPs tasks. Good (well trained)
LPs make everyone’s life easy!
Please call Susan on 332-8004 for more
information.
LPÊs
WE NEED YOU!! Liaison people are needed
to assist our Childbirth Educators over a
eight night course. No special skills
required, just a desire to help give others
a great experience as they begin their
journey as parents. And more LP Dads
please! We are running an information night
in October, if you are interested in
attending or would like information please
phone Susan on 332-8004
TINIES TO TOTS CO-ORDINATOR
Would you like a small position as the
convenor for Tinies to Tots course? This
role involves taking phone bookings and
being at the course over three evenings
(four times per year) to welcome
participants, organise supper etc. Perhaps
you'd like to share the role with a friend?
The library has had a toy-buying spree
lately!! Around $800 worth of new toys are
soon-to-be in circulation. The focus has
been on stimulating and education toys for
the under 12-month age group.
We have decided to switch to a cardissuing
system instead of being
computerised. All our families will be
issued with the new library cards in the
Pepe Parenting Discussion Groups
Your Growing Baby
Your growing baby – Parenting from 6 weeks to 1 year focuses on parenting of
infants aged from six weeks up to one year of age. This course aims to empower
parents to understand wheat is occurring for their infant, as well as to build their own
confidence as a positive parent.
The course comprises of four modules:-
1. Introduction (getting to know each other), Objectives, Health Worker /
Karitane
The Karitane’s role in this session is to assist parents with any concerns they
may be experiencing in the first few weeks of life with their new baby. This may
involve – settling, sleeping, feeding etc.
The course facilitator will also cover topics including – physical and emotional
wellbeing, change, becoming a new father (if applicable), support within the
community.
2. Active Movement (SPARC).
This session is designed to give parents some strategies and activities which
they can implement in their homes to encourage baby’s physical and mental
development. This is a fun, practical session.
3. CPR / Choking / Safety.
This session is facilitated by the Red Cross for the first hour and covers infant
CPR and choking. Parents are encourage to ‘have a go’ with the mannequins.
The PEPE facilitator will spend the remainder of the session discussing ‘safety’
issues and promoting baby’s well-being.
4. Parenting Styles / Your local Plunket.
This is a session based on the SKIP module of ‘Conscious Parenting’ and
introduces parents to the three parenting styles and encourages them to think
about the type of parent they would aspire to be. A great, insightful session!
The Plunket liaison will also spend some time in this session promoting their local
plunket and the services it provides and answering any questions that the parents
may have.
As well as the above topics the facilitators are skilled in discussing many other
topics and are happy to deviate from the scheduled format if that suits the needs
of their group.
These courses are provided free of charge to all First Time Mothers. For more
information and to enroll in these courses, please call Karen Gowans Telephone:
22 ways to teach values. Parenting, Issue 24, Autumn
2006. pp.42-43
1. Affirm with positive words the kinds of behaviours you want from your
child and the kind of actions you expect: “we use our indoor voices in the
library”. “Words are for building people up not tearing them down”.
2. Point out that our actions have consequences. Let your child know that if
she chooses to misbehave, for example, he is choosing to experience a
“timeout” away from playmates or other appropriate consequences. Be
certain to follow through.
3. Respect the differences of opinion each family member has, no matter his
or her age, by “agreeing to disagree” when discussing a controversial
matter of an issue with different sides to it.
4. Major on the majors – pick a few issues and boundaries that are important
to you with regard to household rules and stick to them.
5. Provide a small notebook for your child or teenager to write down her
daily “to do” and “to call” lists to keep her focussed and prevent her from
feeling overwhelmed by demands of school and home responsibilities.
6. Don’t permit putdown humour in your home when children consistently
tease one another, make fun of a younger sibling, or use biting sarcasm.
Create penalties and call a family meeting.
7. Follow through and do what you say you are going to do with your child,
even (and especially) if it is inconvenient. In the process, you will be
modelling the keeping of ones word.
8. When things get hard help your child learn perseverance by saying, “Press
on - you’re going to make it” “we’re proud of you for hanging in there with
your soccer team even though you haven’t won any games yet,” or “That’s a
really long assignment, but stick with it and you’ll get the problems done.”
If the job seems overwhelming, divide it into two or three blocks and
encourage a break in between.
9. Insist on manners even in the small things. Manners are the disciplines of
the thinking of others.
10. Play the game “inventor” to stimulate thinking and coming up with
solutions, a vital skill in problem-solving. Ask questions: What are all the
uses you can think of for an old tyre, an empty ice-cream cone, a shoebox?
11. If children steal or make a mistake support them as they put it right,
make restitution, say sorry.
16

12. Spend twice as much time with your children and half as much money. Play
games and teach them how to be a good loser and a humble winner.
13. Decide together on a family motto” “you can count on me”, :No empty
seats”, “Let your light shine”
14. Many children don’t try new things because they fear failure. Share that
failing at a few things doesn’t make a person a failure and no one can win
all the time. Then read about people who failed but made outstanding
contributions – Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill.
15. Instill the value of hospitality in your child by having someone to your
home at least one meal a week. Rotate a different family member inviting
a guest each week. Include your child in the menu planning, preparation,
making an interesting centrepiece and giving guests a warm welcome as
they arrive.
16. During chore times and on a daily basis use statements that encourage
effort like: Keep up the good work! You catch on so fast – you’re doing a
terrific job. You are working so efficiently and making great use of your
time! I’m so proud of the way you’ve worked today.
17. When your child dives into homework assignments on her own initiative,
praise her and let her know how valuable it is to do things without being
reminded.
18. Use a variety of positive statements that stimulate initiative: You are
really motivated! I like the way you’ve tackled that job without being
asked! You’ve been a self-starter, setting the alarm early and doing your
piano practice before school.
19. Let your children help solve practical problems around your home: figure
out how far apart to space shrubs in a row, plan a family trip. When kids
work with real problems, they become confident in the problem-solving
ability.
20. Encourage your child to write for writing pushes children to organise
their thoughts more than any other activity.
21. When your child has a novel to read for school, “share” the reading by
getting the book yourself and reading it independently. This can open up
great dialogue and discussions about values.
22. Help your child look for something positive in the people they meet by
pointing out strengths or admirable character qualities. Show there is
much to be learned about people from different backgrounds.
From our members
Hi there, My name is Lisa Brignull. My husband and I attended the antenatal classes
held at the St Nicolas church last year. My group of 11 had their babies ranging from 15
January through to 10 March this year. I have just read the July/August addition of your
newsletter and noticed that you were looking for a story or two about antenatal related
things that go on! Well..... All 11 ladies and 11 babies have stuck together well so far - and
long may the growing friendships continue! I have taken it upon myself to become the
'antenatal secretary', and my job consists of arranging walks for the group every Monday at
a different location in and around Christchurch. Being a marathon runner myself, my secret
aim is to get them into the exercising thing - and then maybe have a couple of them running a
marathon with me at some point!!! Our walk this week (South Brighton to South Shore and
back) consisted of a bit of 4 wheel buggy driving which was a laugh and a challenge all at the
same time!! I think most of us enjoyed it - and the well deserved coffee at the end!! Our
other 'not so strenuous planned outing will be a movie at the Sumner Hollywood cinema I
have arranged for 'Mums and Bubs' at the end of the month! In-between our walks and
coffee groups at each others house every second Wednesday, some of us meet at the
Colombo Street Library for babytime music, we do Baby and Mum Yoga at Pioneer Leisure
Centre, and soon we are going to start Bumble Bees Swimming Lessons - its such fun being a
Mum!!!
Guidelines for using your thermacell baby blanket
*From Binary Systems NZ website - www.binary.co.nz
♦ Always use your blankets with a sheet and do not use in a way where multiple blanket layers can overlay
the baby’s face
♦ Do not use many layers as overheating has a higher risk factor than coolness
♦ Initially monitor baby’s temperature (by feel) until comfortable amounts of cover are established
♦ Duvet covers are not recommended until 12 months
♦ Allow the baby to have some limb movement and always ensure that the head area remains clear of
cover
Naming your baby - WhatÊs in a name?
By Kay Male
Naming your baby is such a huge
responsibility and many people dread this
task. We are currently struggling to agree
on the perfect name for our unborn child!
The name you choose for your child will be
the corner-stone of your baby’s identity
and will last them a lifetime – through
school, work and beyond.
There was a story recently regarding a NZ
couple which appeared in the news all over
the globe. The couple have come under
public scrutiny for wanting to name their
child 4Real. When questioned about the
name, the couple have said that the name
has meaning for them and they decided on
the name after seeing an ultrasound scan
and realising the baby was "for real". They
said they chose the spelling "4Real"
because it was the clearest and simplest
way of writing it down.
In the newspapers here in NZ, it has
provoked a lot of people to write in with
their opinions. Many of these people have
questioned the wisdom of naming a child
something so unusual, saying that the boy
would certainly be teased.
‘Famous’ people who are in the public eye
have been naming their children ‘unusual’ or
some might say ‘wacky’ names for years…
here are some examples:
•Ahmet Emuukha Rodan - (Frank Zappa)
•Apple - (Gwyneth Paltrow)
•Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily - (Paula Yates)
•Zowie Bowie - (David Bowie)
•Pilot Inspektor - (Jason Lee)
•Phinnaeus Walter - (Julia Roberts)
What New Zealand law says about
naming your baby:
Under the Births, Deaths, and Marriages
Registration Act 1995, children born in
New Zealand must be registered within
two months of the birth. The law forbids
names that resemble an official title or
rank, names that are unreasonably long and
names that may cause offence to a
reasonable person. It is also advised that
parents avoid names which would cause
their child to be teased or made fun of. In
considering an applicant's request, the
Registrar-General weighs the applicant's
personal reasons for having the name
included, against factors such as whether
the name is likely to cause confusion in
New Zealand or overseas.
The Top 10 baby names in New Zealand
for 2006 were as follows:
No. Boys Girls
1 Jack Charlotte
2 Joshua Ella
3 Daniel Sophie
4 William Emma
5 Samuel Olivia
6 Jacob Emily
7 Thomas Grace
8 Benjamin Jessica
9 Ryan Hannah
10 Liam Lily
