Knitting Needles or size that gives correct
tension/gauge.
MATERIALS
A Yarn Needle.
TENSION/GAUGE
For Scarf - 14 sts in width to 10 cms/4 ins
over patt, using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7)
Knitting Needles.
For Gloves - 21 sts and 29 rows to 10
cms/4 ins over stocking st, using 4.00mm
(US 6), (UK 8) Knitting Needles.
Note - Correct tension/gauge is essential
for a successful handknit.
ABBREVIATIONS
St/s - stitch/es, K - knit, P - purl, RS - right
side, WS - wrong side, garter st - every row
knit, stocking st - 1 row K, 1 row P, beg -
begin/ning, patt - pattern, tog - together, rep
- repeat, cont - continue, P2tog - purl 2 sts
together, yrn - yarn round needle to make a
stitch, inc - increase, M1 - make one st by
picking up loop that lies before next st, place
on left hand needle and knit into back of loop,
K2tog - knit 2 sts together, rem - remain/ing.
CREATE
Scarf
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on
50 sts loosely.
Beg patt - 1st row - K1, * yrn, P2tog, rep
from * to last st, K1.
Rep 1st row for patt throughout until Scarf
weighs approx 150g. Cast/bind off.
Cast/bind off very loosely knitways.
Gloves
Right Glove (beg at cuff)
Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,
cast on 39 sts.
Beg 1 x 1 rib - 1st row (RS) - K2, * P1,
K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
2nd row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to
end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures
7 cms/3 ins from beg, ending with a 2nd
row and inc one st in centre of last row =
40 sts.
Next row - K20, M1, K20 = 41 sts.
Next row - K1, purl to last st, K1.
Shape thumb gusset - 1st row (RS) -
K20, M1, K1, M1, knit to end = 43 sts.
2nd and foll alt rows - K1, purl to last
st, K1.
3rd row - K20, M1, K3, M1, knit to end
= 45 sts.
5th row - K20, M1, K5, M1, knit to end
= 47 sts.
7th row - K20, M1, K7, M1, knit to end
= 49 sts.
9th row - K20, M1, K9, M1, knit to end
= 51 sts.
11th row - K20, M1, K11, M1, knit to
end = 53 sts.
Shape thumb - 1st row (WS) - K1, purl
to last 20 sts, turn.
2nd row - Inc in first st, K12, turn.
3rd row - Inc in first st, P13, turn.
Cont in stocking st on these 15 sts for
thumb until thumb measures 4.5 cms/1½
ins, ending with a purl row.
Next row - (K2tog, K1) 5 times = 10 sts.
Next row - Purl.
Next row - (K2tog) 5 times = 5 sts.
Break off yarn, leaving a long end. Run
end through rem sts, draw up tightly and
fasten off securely.
