Nina Chris Foch Evans
‘Captain America: The Winter Sol
dier’ officially the highest-grossing
April film of all-time
Marvel sequel has brought in
$224.9 million domestically
I first saw Nina Foch as the wealthy “Milo” who buys Gene Kelly’s
paintings in “An American in Paris,” I was young, the film seemed real to me,
as Kelly’s character and I shared the first name. It seemed personal. I could
go out and paint, create art and actually be an ARTIST!
I thought a lot about Nina Foch growing up. She knew who could be an artist
and what art was. She found Gene Kelly painting on the streets, after all. I
fantasized a Nina would walk into my life, take me by the hand and show me
how to be me, the me that was hidden under all that fear.
Little did I know Nina was doing just that for the young and lucky USC
students. How did I miss out? Was I riding the wrong wave? Why didn’t
anyone tell me? All those classes with that beautiful angel of grace and
knowledge lost… like smoke in the movie projector shaft of light, a ghost
fading away, treasures and ancient knowledge lost in time.
When I found out through an actor friend that Randal Kleiser and George
Lucas had rescued that force, that power of Nina’s wisdom by capturing
her teachings and the affects on her students in the Nina Foch Course for
Filmmakers and Actors for ever… I had to get my hands, head, heart and
eyes on that 2 DVD set fast! I had a lot of missed time to make up for, I never
had a chance to see her in the flesh, this knowledge was what I needed!
She had worked with Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Uta Hagen, plus her
experiences being directed by such icons like Stanley Kubrick, Vincente
Minnelli, Robert Wise, Otto Preminger, Blake Edwards and Cecil B. DeMille.
What treasures, what instructions, what plans and results could lay ahead of
me?
Then an interesting thing occurred to me as I watched her; This isn’t just
for filmmakers and actors, if you were shy, lonely, had difficulty speaking in
front of a group of people, wanted to sell yourself in the best light to a new
job opportunity, a potential customer at your boutique, the crowd you’re
performing for at the festival in the park, your golfing buddies, or a blind
date with a beautiful dream… It was all there in The Nina Foch Project.
