Dr Maribel Parra<br />
Cellular Differentiation Group<br />
Maribel Parra (Granollers, Barcelona, 1972) graduated in<br />
Chemistry in 1998 from the University Autonomous of<br />
Barcelona (UAB). In 2003, she received her PhD un<strong>de</strong>r<br />
the supervision of Dr. Pura Muñoz Cánoves at the<br />
Oncology Research Institute (IRO) and the University of<br />
Barcelona. Dr. Parra’s PhD project was focused on the<br />
investigation of the signaling pathways involved in the transcriptional<br />
activation of components of the Plasminogen<br />
Activation system in response to genotoxic stress.<br />
After finishing her PhD in 2003, Dr. Parra joined the laboratory<br />
of Dr. Eric Verdin (Gladstone Institute of Virology<br />
and Immunology (GIVI), University of California, San<br />
Francisco (UCSF) as a postdoctoral researcher. In<br />
Dr. Verdin’s laboratory, Dr Parra i<strong>de</strong>ntified the kinase and the<br />
phosphatase responsable for the phosphorylation/<strong>de</strong>phosphorylation<br />
and subcellular distribution of the histone<br />
<strong>de</strong>acetylase HDAC7 in response to T cell receptor activation.<br />
HDAC7 is a transcriptional co-repressor key in the<br />
negative selection of thymocytes during T cell <strong>de</strong>velopment.<br />
In 2006, Dr. Parra was awar<strong>de</strong>d with a Ramón y Cajal<br />
contract from the Spanish Ministry of Science and<br />
Education (MEC). In 2007, she joined the laboratory of Dr.<br />
Thomas Graf at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG)<br />
in Barcelona to initiate her studies on the role of chromatin<br />
modifying enzymes in the hematopoietic system.<br />
Since 2007, Dr. Parra has obtained funding from the<br />
European Comission (Marie Curie International<br />
Reintegration Grant) and form the Spanish Ministry of<br />
Science and Innovation (I+D+i Grant, Plan Nacional).<br />
Since February 2009, Dr. Parra is lea<strong>de</strong>r of the Cell<br />
Differentiation Group at the Cancer Epigenetics and<br />
Biology Program (<strong>PEBC</strong>) of the Bellvitge Institute for<br />
Biomedical Research (IDIBELL) in Barcelona. Her current<br />
research is focused in the study of the epigenetic mechanisms<br />
involved in the lineage commitment and the differentiation<br />
of hematopoietic cells, as well as, their potential<br />
involvement in hematological disease.<br />
