Please tell us why you enjoyed taking part in Child Safety Week
(this is not part of the competition – we just want to know what you think!)
I enjoyed taking part in Child Safety Week because:
cup of tea
chip pans
hot water
bleach
iron tablets
candles
It’s easy to put child safety first when you
know how to look for hidden hazards.
Looking at the world through a child’s eyes
is a good starting point. What hazards can
you find around your home? Is that kettle
so near the edge that a toddler could easily
pull it on top of themselves? And what
about the garden? Is that bottle of weed
killer put away safely, or left out
somewhere where a child could mistake
it for a bottle of fizzy drink?
Don’t forget that some of the things
we use every day as adults can be
dangerous to children. Matches and lighters
left lying around can be tempting toys for
young hands. And if your toddler swallows
three or four of your high-dose iron tablets,
they can suffer serious poisoning.
As children become more independent,
there are different hazards you need to look
out for. Is your child really ready to walk to
school alone, or cycle on the roads? And
how aware are they of the risks of playing
near canals or railway lines?
Enter our wordsearch competition and
find ten hidden hazards that can threaten
a child’s safety at home or out and about.
Clues may be upside down, back to front
or diagonal (on the slant). Circle the words
in the grid and send them, together with
the form, to the address below.
Closing date: Friday 8 September 2006
Winners will be notified by 9 October 2006
