Think safety every time you walk your children to school or drive to the shops. By showing children examples of road safety from an early age – and making sure you observe speed limits and passenger regulations – you are laying a good foundation for children’s safety on our busy roads. ✔ organise a role play on pedestrian safety. With older children, include hazards like talking on mobile phones or running across roads. Younger children can practise crossing roads holding hands with a adult, while others can be traffic or the lollipop person ✔ encourage children and young people to check out their knowledge at: 1. If hit by a car travelling at 30mph around 80% will survive • seven out of ten drivers admit to regularly breaking the speed limit in built-up areas • drivers need to be aware that, despite their growing independence, children between eight and 11 still find it hard to judge speeds and distances.
