Paramakudi Police Firing Demonstration by PW th The 11 of September, 2011 marked a scene of violations that is continuously being probed by political parties, Dalit organizations, human rights organizations, writers, academics and several others from Tamil Nadu and from throughout the country. There were 3 different incidents took place at three different places. The first police firing that took place was in Madurai district in a place called Chinthamani wherein nobody was killed, but two persons were very seriously injured. Then came the Paramakudi police firing where 6 persons were shot dead; and after that another police firing that took place in Ilayankudi that falls within the jurisdiction of Sivagangai district. It was in this context that PW had organized an agitation at th Madurai on 14 September 2011. Members from Political parties, Human Rights Activists, NGOs and movements participated in this mass agitation. The main demand of the agitation was “A re-post mortem should be performed on all the bodies in the presence of family members and human rights defenders; No high ranking police official should enter the affected districts of Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Tuticorin without the permission of the District Magistrate; It was pointed out that there were cases of “brutal” police torture of some selected Dalit activists and Police firing was not preceded by the mandatory lathi charge and use of teargas. CHRM - PW Participation in Global Warming Seminar CONFERENCE AGAINST GLOBAL WARMING A mass rally was conducted and it started from Teppakulam and ended in Tamukkam Grounds. The rally was followed by a 3-days program in the Tamukkam ground. The campaign was organized by Joint Action Committee nd rd Against Global Warming from 22 to 23 July 2011. People's Watch had a stall at the Venue and conducted a seminar on “Global Warming and Human Rights”. The People's Watch
seminar was falicitated by Mr.Henri Tiphagne, Executive Director-PW, Mr.George Kurien @ Siddharth, Environmental Activist, Bangalore, Dr.Rajkumar, Huam Rights Activist, Chennai and Mr.Martin, Advocate from Trichy facilitated the program. All staff Members from PW , CHRM Cadres, General Public and Civil Society Organisations attended the seminar. th CHRM District Council Meeting was held at Erode and Coimbatore on 8 September 2011. Mr.C.J.Rajan, Director-TNPHR&D and Mr.G.Ganesan, SC- TNPHR&D facilitated the programs and Adv.Nicholas and Mr.Senthilraja, RHRC coordinated the program. IHRE - NCPCR IHRE ON RTE -Public Hearing in Erode, Sivaganga and Vellore Districts in Tamilnadu far behind in implementing RTE Act After having participated in the Public hearing, on the functioning of Government schools in Tamilnadu, jointly organized by NCPCR and IHRE in Erode, Sivagangai and Vellore districts, the NCPCR officials complained that many government schools in TN even lacked toilets and drinking water, which led to children dropping out of schools. NCPCR national coordinator for RTE, Ms Kiran Bhatty, said, “Parents and teachers association meetings are not organised in many schools. It is compulsory to form school management committees (SMCs) in each school under the RTE Act. NCPCR state representative Mr. Henri Tiphagne said in Manamadurai block alone, as many as 40 per cent of teacher had been appointed on deputation even though they claimed there were only few vacancies. He said during the social audit, teachers, parents, students and government officials took part with interest. They came out with solutions for problems such as lack of transportation to reach the school. Documentary Film Release at Chennai “Enakku Ellaiya Kalvi” a documentary film was released at th Devaneyarpavannar Arangam, Chennai on 9 July 2011. There were representations from political parties, Movements, Human Rights Organisations and NGOs. There were 300 people participated in this program.
