Paramakudi Police Firing Demonstration by PW<br />

The 11 of <strong>September</strong>, 2011 marked a scene of violations that is<br />
continuously being probed by political parties, Dalit<br />
organizations, human rights organizations, writers, academics<br />
and several others from Tamil Nadu and from throughout the<br />
country. There were 3 different incidents took place at three<br />
different places. The first police firing that took place was in<br />
Madurai district in a place called Chinthamani wherein nobody<br />
was killed, but two persons were very seriously injured.<br />
Then came the Paramakudi police firing where 6 persons<br />
were shot dead; and after that another police firing that<br />
took place in Ilayankudi that falls within the jurisdiction of<br />
Sivagangai district.<br />
It was in this context that PW had organized an agitation at<br />
th<br />
Madurai on 14 <strong>September</strong> 2011. Members from Political<br />
parties, Human Rights Activists, NGOs and movements<br />
participated in this mass agitation. The main demand of the agitation was “A re-post mortem should be performed<br />
on all the bodies in the presence of family members and human rights defenders; No high ranking police official<br />
should enter the affected districts of Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Tuticorin without the permission of the<br />
District Magistrate; It was pointed out that there were cases of “brutal” police torture of some selected Dalit<br />
activists and Police firing was not preceded by the mandatory lathi charge and use of teargas.<br />

rally was conducted and it started from Teppakulam and<br />
ended in Tamukkam Grounds. The rally was followed by<br />
a 3-days program in the Tamukkam ground. The<br />
campaign was organized by Joint Action Committee<br />
