Cooking & Baking
The museum village’s foodways group, the Vintage
Victuals, are responsible for all of the food programming
that takes place in the village. These volunteers handle
everything from baking the samples handed out at
Christmas in the Village, to heritage cooking
demonstrations at events and programs, to public
workshops, to baking and cooking for the snack bar, to
helping with the washing of dishes, and making lunch for
other volunteers. Some opportunities are in costume and
require interpretation skills.
Behind the Scenes
There are various ways to help support PMV operations and
events that do not involve historical interpretation. Gate
volunteers assist with counting visitors for our statistics and
promoting both the day’s activities and any upcoming
museum village events upon exit. The lounge host(ess)
keeps the volunteers’ area tidy, washes lunch dishes,
attends to the refreshments for the volunteers, and prevents
visitors from entering this restricted area. Do you like taking
pictures? For each event we look for someone to capture
the moments!
Research
Research is ongoing in such areas as social history, local
politics, day-to-day rural life, local personalities, specific
artifacts, gardening practices, and much more. Ideas and
suggestions for new activities for event days must be
researched for accuracy and authenticity to our community’s
heritage and the PMV mandate. Volunteers who are
interested in researching may be asked to assist with
research, or assume the research independently. See Event
& Volunteer Programmer for details.
Page 18
Page 7
Volunteer Opportunities Booklet 2013
Artifact Assistance
Under the direction of staff, a volunteer may assist with
researching, documenting, taking inventory, filing, cleaning
artifacts, or other tasks. In 2007, we began an inventory of
the museum village’s artifact collection; this project is
ongoing and still requires volunteer support. Volunteers are
needed for inventorying and also for computer data entry.
Training will be provided as required.
Gardening
Bloomers & Britches Heritage Gardeners meet at the
Museum Village on Tuesday or Saturday mornings to
garden, and holds planning meetings in the spring and fall.
Not only do they maintain the gardens, but this handy group
also ensures that the gardens are historically correct for the
building to which they are adjacent. Youth gardeners are
wanted to help maintain our vegetable patch.
Costumes
This is a pressing invitation if you have any spare hours to
join us in treating your complexions to steam treatment and
the aroma therapy of hot cotton, to say nothing of the
calorie-burning potential of vigorous arm exercise! The
Nimble Thimbles, our costume committee, researches,
creates and maintains the museum village’s collection of
reproduction costumes. Opportunities range from research,
to sewing, to ironing, to sorting, and to maintenance of the
collection. Sewing bees are held occasionally throughout
the year.
The volunteer family is growing again! Printer’s Ink will be
