Volunteer Opportunities Booklet 2013 Youth Certificate Saturday May 25, 2013 (9:30 am to 12:00 pm) This seminar is mandatory for all youth. Youth volunteers will explore their role in the volunteer team including their expectations, responsibilities, behaviour and attitude, helping adult volunteers, working with others, speaking with visitors, and proper costuming. This seminar is required every second year for youth volunteers. Volunteers requiring this training have been assigned to available dates this year. Contact the Event & Volunteer Programmer by May 6 if you need to schedule a different date. Page 14 JUNE History in Action Saturdays Training Saturday June 1, 2013 (9:00 am to 10:00 am) This training is mandatory for any volunteers wishing to participate in History in Action Saturdays in 2013. Registration required, please RSVP by May 27 to the Event & Volunteer Programmer. History in Action Saturdays Saturday June 8, 15, 22, 29, 2013 (10:00 am to 4:00 pm) History in Action Saturdays are back again in 2013! This year we are starting on June 8 and will continue every Saturday through to August 31. Have you learned a skill in one of our workshops that you’d like to get a chance to try out? Volunteers are required for Saturdays between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm to demonstrate a variety of skills. You must confirm availability with the Event and Volunteer Programmer 2 weeks prior to the date. Seedy Saturday Saturday February 16, 2013 (9:00 am to 4:00 pm) This is the fifth time that PMV and Bloomers & Britches will host a Seedy Saturday event! The location for this event is the Pickering Recreation Complex in the East & West Salons. We are looking for volunteers to assist with set up and take down, greeting visitors, the children’s activity, Garden Café and more! Heritage Day Saturday February 23, 2013 (9:00 am to 6:00 pm) This event will be taking place at the Pickering Town Centre. We are looking for volunteers to represent the museum village at our booth, various shifts are available. Each year one of the museum village volunteer groups represents our museum village on the main stage. MARCH PMV Foundation AGM Thursday March 21, 2013 All are welcome at the Foundation Annual General Meeting. Guest speaker to be announced, check the pmvf.ca for details, time and location. Backwoods Players AGM Wednesday March 27, 2013 (7:00 pm – 9:00 pm) All are welcome to join the Backwoods Players at their Annual General Meeting, held at the Redman House. Page 11
Volunteer Opportunities Booklet 2013 Easter Parade Saturday March 30, 2013 Volunteers are required to walk the parade route in costume, and naturally, Easter bonnets! Representatives from each of the different volunteer groups are required since we will be promoting volunteer opportunities. Page 12 APRIL Orientation Training Saturday April 13, 2013 (9:30 am to 12:00 pm) This workshop is mandatory for all new volunteers at the Pickering Museum Village and as a refresher every 2 years after. This workshop will provide an introduction to volunteering at the PMV policies & procedures, health & safety, and more will be covered this day. Volunteers requiring this training have been assigned to available dates this year. Contact the Event & Volunteer Programmer by April 6, 2013 if you need to schedule a different date. MAY Accessibility Training Saturday May 4, 2013 (9:00 am to 10:30 am) This training is mandatory once for ALL museum volunteers. Learn about accessible customer service standards and the ways PMV is accessible to visitors. Volunteers requiring this training have been assigned to available dates this year. Contact the Event & Volunteer Programmer by April 6 if you need to schedule a different date. Volunteer Opportunities Booklet 2013 Fire Safety Training Saturday May 4, 2013 (10:30 am to 12:00 pm) This training is mandatory for all new volunteers and as a refresher every 2 years. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher and about fire safety at the museum village. Volunteers requiring this training have been assigned to available dates this year. Contact the Event & Volunteer Programmer by April 6 if you need to schedule a different date. Turn Over Day Saturday May 4, 2013 On this is the date, the Bloomers and Britches will turn over the museum village gardens to get ready for the growing season ahead. Many hands make light work! Volunteers from all areas welcome. Mother’s Day Tea Sunday May 12, 2013 (10:00 am to 4:00 pm) PMV will once again be hosting a Mother’s Day Tea in the Redman House. Volunteers are required for set-up, serving, clean-up, and behind the scenes kitchen help. Techniques for Successful Interpretation Saturday May 25, 2013 (9:30 am to 12:00 pm) This seminar is mandatory for all new adult volunteers (16 years and older) who wish to volunteer as a costumed interpreter. This training focuses on communicating with and inspiring the museum visitor. Participants must read the historical interpretative notes in the Volunteer Handbook before attending. Interpretive exercises and an introduction to role-playing will be part of this session. Volunteers requiring this training have been assigned to available dates this year.
