<strong>guidel<strong>in</strong>e</strong>s, organisational policies <strong>and</strong> procedures relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>restra<strong>in</strong>ts</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
the specific practice sett<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
5. Documentation expla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> supports the decision <strong>for</strong> restra<strong>in</strong>t <strong>and</strong> provides<br />
an accurate record of the person’s care, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g evaluation of <strong>in</strong>terventions<br />
<strong>and</strong> outcomes.<br />
6. Regular monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> a decision mak<strong>in</strong>g trail <strong>in</strong>clusive of ongo<strong>in</strong>g review of<br />
the need <strong>for</strong> restra<strong>in</strong>t.<br />
7. Nurses <strong>and</strong> <strong>midwives</strong> are entitled to a safe work<strong>in</strong>g environment <strong>and</strong> are not<br />
obliged to put themselves at risk. The nurse or midwife has the right to<br />
withdraw <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiate the organisational response that ensures the safety of<br />
all persons.<br />
8. Nurses <strong>and</strong> <strong>midwives</strong> can expect the management of health care <strong>and</strong><br />
community sett<strong>in</strong>gs to:<br />
• develop policies <strong>and</strong> procedures relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>restra<strong>in</strong>ts</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the safe use<br />
of equipment provided <strong>for</strong> use as <strong>restra<strong>in</strong>ts</strong>;<br />
• ensure education <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> staff; <strong>and</strong><br />
• keep abreast of best practice <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>restra<strong>in</strong>ts</strong>.<br />
9. Nurses <strong>and</strong> <strong>midwives</strong> are expected to work proactively with management<br />
personnel of health care <strong>and</strong> community sett<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> relation to restra<strong>in</strong>t <strong>and</strong><br />
seclusion by:<br />
• <strong>in</strong>itiat<strong>in</strong>g prevention programs;<br />
• ensur<strong>in</strong>g safe equipment is provided <strong>and</strong> used <strong>in</strong> compliance with<br />
manufacturer’s <strong>in</strong>structions to m<strong>in</strong>imise risk to the person;<br />
• promot<strong>in</strong>g effective communication <strong>and</strong> consultation; <strong>and</strong><br />
• establish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g review processes to ensure organisational<br />
policies <strong>and</strong> procedures that guide practice are <strong>in</strong> accordance with<br />
Australian st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />
