In 2004, Comme des Garçonsʼs Rei Kawakubo and
Adrian Joffe plucked architecture student Christian
Weinecke to design and open CDGʼs first Guerrilla
Store in an old Berlin bookshop. Now Weinecke
works with a team to scout new locales (the more
marginal the better), cultivate local partners (most
of whom have never been involved with fashion
retail), and conceptualize interiors for the stores,
each of which closes no more than a year after it
opens. The latest site popped up this spring in a
former shoe-polish factory in Krakow, Poland. The
...n+n
250-square-foot shop, decorated only with leftover
factory provisions and secondhand Socialist furniture,
sells a mix of CDGʼs current fashions as well as
impeccable stock from past seasons. “The idea is to
forget about the connotations of old and new, this
season and last season,” Weinecke says. “We want
to present clothes the way you have them in your
cupboard: all together, the pieces you love.”
To hear it from some, Nokiaʼs N95
may end up a usurper to the iPhoneʼs
throne: A smartphone that boasts
5 megapixels to the iPhoneʼs 2, it
has an integrated GPS system and
can be used on any network. But at
$749, can a two-way slider trump a
touchscreen? Let the games begin.
SoftBank, the cell-phone company
that owns Vodafone in Japan, has
teamed with Pantone to create the
812SH, a collection of fashion phones
by designer Takuya Onuki. Fancy
a phone in Hexachrome Cyan? Itʼs
there, along with 19 other shades
from mint green to magenta.
If Gordon Gekko carried a cell phone,
this would be it: With a neon stripe
circling its perimeter, Motorolaʼs
MOTORIZR Z8 oozes ʼ80s cool. The Z8
can support up to 4 GB of memory
and has nearly 16 days of standby
time, but the niftiest feature is its
slider, which angles to cradle the face
just as a normal handset does.
Helio poached the designer of
T-Mobileʼs Sidekick series to create
OCEAN, an innovative dual slider.
Made of three layers, its top slides up
to reveal a keypad, and the bottom
layerʼs QWERTY keyboard slides out
like a traditional texting device. Like
all Helios, the device comes with
access to Google Maps and any
social-networking tool you can
think of; $295.
Tokujin Yoshiokaʼs MEDIA SKIN
by KDDI, the sixth in a series that
includes phones by Marc Newson and
Naoto Fukasawa, was prototyped two
years ago and pulled into MoMAʼs
permanent collection. No wonder:
Its textured surface (the orange and
white models feature a paint thatʼs
made from the silicon particles used
in cosmetic foundations) makes it
feel more like an art piece than an
accessory. Available in Japan for
purchase, in the U.S. for dreams.
Alessiʼs FRUIT BASKET TEA SET, a
rare foray into product design by
SANAA, finds the Japanese architects
abandoning linearity in favor of
squat apple shapes. A corresponding
set of mocha cups and spoons have
branchlike handles that mimic
the slim tip of each stainless-steel
container; $860 for the set.
