very meaningful and fun
Congratulations to Nancy Fletcher and the great staff for their
dedication and hard work. They make going to the fitness center
We are so impressed with the variety of activities and
programs that are made available to us. Nancy is an excellent
Thanks to all for the special day on Saturday and for
Hi Maria,
You've got to be real proud of the job that Cathy Sigl and
staff (Catrina, Shelly & Pat and Javier) did for us last night at
our annual Marine Corps birthday ball! The cooks, Adrianna
and Steve, did an exceptional job as well with our three different
food options and the timing was excellent as well!
And Tony Ortiz who is always there to make certain the
sound and video equipment is in good order and that we know
just how to use them!
Keep up the good work and we'll see you again next year at
our 238th birthday!!
As we enter the New Year the Club has a lots of
projects we are working on that we hope the membership
will enjoy.
We are currently in the process of upgrading the
landscaping at both Prestwick and Plantation Bay. Both
projects will be adding several beautiful trees, shrubs and
removing the older vegetation.
The Club has completed the demolition of the old
tennis building. In its place we will be irrigating and
sodding the area for future development. We will also be
renovating the main tennis court fences and surrounding
areas.
Throughout the year we will continue to have ongoing
projects that will enhance the Clubs and the Plantation
TIP FROM THE TOP
Putting Tips by Ulrika Smith
Putting accounts for nearly half of our strokes during
a round of golf. I am hoping that some of the following
tips may help you lower your scores.
1) Read your putt from two important locations
(directly behind the ball and the low side. Next
time you putt, start by looking at your line directly
behind the golf ball. This first view will hopefully
give you an idea of how the putt will break. Second,
find the low side (if you cannot tell by sight, use
your feet to feel where the high vs. the low point on
the green is located) to determine how much slope
you are dealing with.
2) Be very specific of where your putter face is aimed.
Pick a tiny spec or blade of grass no further than a
foot away from the golf ball to line your putter face
up with .
3) To acquire the smoothest roll possible, make sure
the pace of the stroke is even. Maintain the same
tempo on both short and long putts but adjust the
length of the stroke to roll the ball the desired
distance.
Good luck!
CLUB DE BONMONT WOMEN’S
GOLF ASSOCIATION
We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday
season, but now that the holidays are over, it’s time for
some great golf events. Our President’s Cup will be held
January 17 and January 24, followed by our League
Championship, February 21 and February 28. On March
14 we will have a Dog & Cat Fight, open to all men who
are golf members of Plantation Bay (whether or not they
belong to the Prestwick or CDB men’s league). It’ll be a
fun match-play tournament, and everyone will be asked to
bring a donation for our furry friends---dog or cat food,
toys, kitty litter, or old towels. The Member/Member
tournament rounds out the quarter with play on March 21
and March 28. This is always our biggest event and we
look forward to another great turnout.
Our WPC, Seagals and VIP teams have been
representing the CDBWGA and Plantation Bay well, and
we want to cheer them on as they continue to compete for
fun and glory!
Kathy Light, our resident USGA Rules Official, will
conduct a rules clinic after the first round of play in the
President’s Cup on January 17. Kathy always does a great
job of helping us play the game the way it should be played.
This is an event you don’t want to miss!
We have a great golf season ahead of us, so come join
us on Thursdays!
PRESTWICK WOMEN’S
GOLF ASSOCIATION
The Prestwick Women's Golf Association has a packed
Fall season coming up. It has been great to welcome back
our traveling members from their summer vacations and get
all of the golf events going in full swing. (No pun intended)
November tournaments include inviting CDB WGA
members for a FUN DAY on the 13th. Our
member/member tournament encourages ladies to choose a
partner within 12 strokes handicap to play 9 holes alternate
shot and 9 holes scramble on the first day, November 27th.
The following Tuesday we will play better ball of the
partners. December's main event is the Holiday Scramble
hosted by the Niners. Players will be member billed $300
each. New Years Day falls on a Tuesday, so for the first time
we will be offering our die hard golfers to play a Shamble
with a twist which we are calling Hangover Helper. The
last Tuesday in January is our Pauli Waddle Tournament
and Social which celebrates the league that our founder
Pauli began and honors her love of animals with fund
raising efforts being contributed to the Flagler Humane
Society. This will be a shotgun at 12:30, net best ball of the
foursome with the Pro Shop creating the pairings. The
tournament will be followed by hors d'oeuvres and cash bar.
We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and Joyous
Holiday Season
Fran Sampson, President
PLANTATION BAY NINERS
Happy New Year to everyone and we wish you a Happy
& Healthy 2013.
The last few months of 2012 have been very busy. Our
Hubby/Friend scramble was on November 1st. We had a
great crowd at CDB. First place winners were Sheila and
Brian Egan and Betty and Bob Rossi. Congratulations and
thanks to all the folks who came out and enjoyed the event.
We also raised some funds through our raffle to support the
Red Cross and their efforts to help those who were
impacted by Hurricane Sandy in the North East. We
extend a big thank you to Ulrika for her ongoing support
and Maria Kesselring and Bernice Stamford for putting it
all together.
Our Cookie Luncheon was held in December and the
dozens of cookies were given to St. Anne’s Pantry to
support the needy in Bunnell and Flagler counties. Thank
you to all the bakers. Linda Young and Katie Kuhn deserve
special recognition for once again organizing this wonderful
Holiday effort.
We are looking forward to a fun and busy winter with
our regular play on Tuesdays at Prestwick and Thursdays at
Club de Bonmont. On February 14th, we look forward to
the Coastal Niners Invitational at the The Grand Club.
On March 11th Palm Harbor will host the Coastal Niners
Invitational. We also have our Member Guest at Prestwick
on March 20th and our Member at CDB in April. We will
wrap up our season with our last away game on April 24th
at Hammock Dunes. Be sure to mark your calendars!
Please join us! We welcome new members and we now
have a recruitment chair, Maureen Ford. Come out for nine
holes with the Niners or just come to lunch to meet the
ladies and share in the fun. All levels of golfers, beginning,
intermediate and advanced are welcome. Please contact
Maureen or me for information.
Happy New Year to all our members and their families
and a special welcome to our new members.
We remember all those affected by hurricane Sandy last
October and wish all a speedy recovery from their loss.
We trust all have had a joyous holiday and look forward
to a mild winter with as little need for woolen hats and gloves,
as shadows grow shorter and we look forward to spring.
Get ready for some great away tournaments in 2013 as
well as our usual great special events. As always we look
forward to each Thursday with our diversified array of
competition to make play fun and interesting.
So, now that the snow birds are back, let’s all get together
and re-establish our friendships and support the club at the
same time. Of course, Free Beer Thursday will continue this
year on the third Thursday of every month.
Looking forward to seeing new and old members in 2013
and again to all a happy healthy New Year.
Turf Talk…
by Brad Tucker
Superintendent CDB
Now that winter is here and the golfing season is in full
swing, I cannot help to reflect upon the last three Florida
winters. Mother Nature has taught me that Florida winters
are basically unpredictable. The winter of 2010, we all
thought we were living in Chicago. The winter of 2011,
fairly normal. The winter of 2012, it felt like we were living
in the Keys. Well all of that aside, I will assume that this
winter will be a fairy normal one. This means we can expect
our usual 4 to 6 frost delays. I would like to take the
opportunity to actually explain why we can’t allow play on
the courses when there is frost.
How does frost damage turf? Its just partially frozen
water, we water the turf all the time. Grass plants, just like
all other living organisms, are made up of cells. For a
moment, imagine that plant cell as a balloon filled with
water. The balloon itself we will view as the cell wall. Just
inside the cell wall is the cell membrane. When frozen grass
plants are driven or walked on, the sharp edges of the ice
punctures the plant cell. This would be similar to sticking a
needle in the water balloon. Once this happens, the plant
cell looses pressure inside itself, and is no longer able to
function. The double edged sword for bermudagrass is that
the time of year that this occurs, the turf is least able to
recover. Long story short, when turf gets damaged due to
frost in the winter time, we can plan on that turf not
recovering for 2 to 3 months. My hope is that now members
understand why we have to hold up play.
In closing, thank you for your course care & enjoy the
2013 golf season.
Fitness News
First, I want to thank everyone
that participated in our PB Tri-
Athlon & Five Year Anniversary
event. We had a great time and
raised $1000.00! Plus, many more
donated hundreds of dollars’ worth
of dry and can goods for the local
food banks. Plantation Bay has many
generous and thoughtful residents!
Mark your calendars to participate in our
Annual Polar Bear Plunge
Saturday, January 5, 2013 at HIGH NOON!
Can there really be any advantages to “chillin’ your
bod” in cold water? Surprisingly, the answer is yes...
• Shocking the circulatory system can produce a warm
afterglow that increases circulation and heightens
awareness with high levels of adrenaline; with these
physical changes in the body, some experience a
spiritual and/or emotional reaction too.
• The drastic temperature change on the skin and the
subsequent shivering actually exercise shallow, subcutaneous
muscles, temporarily firming the skin.
• The fun and camaraderie in conjunction with the
increase in adrenaline, can lift a bout of mild
depression.
• You can check it off your bucket list and have fun—all
at the same time!
For the past several years, we have hosted a Polar Bear
Plunge at the fitness center as a fun, energizing event to
celebrate the New Year and mingle with friends. Some
years the water and the weather have been cold and others
times it has been warm and pleasant, but everyone always
has fun. All PB members are invited as either participants
or spectators, but participants get a “badge of honor” with
a special t-shirt designed for the occasion! Afterward,
everyone can enjoy libations, hot chocolate and snacks.
Please stop by the Center and sign up.
A new year typically finds us making New Year’s
Resolutions, but eating and/or lifestyle habits shouldn’t be
as fleeting as fashion trends. The truth be told, the greatest
weight loss strategies are those that can be permanently
adopted. So this year, instead of making drastic changes
FITNESS NEWS
by Nancy Fletcher, Fitness Director
that are difficult to maintain, how about trying small habit
changes that can create a positive result that lasts a
lifetime? Here are a few simple tricks to try (one or more
of) which can help get those extra pounds off from the
holidays and they’re easy enough to stick to forever:
Eat Breakfast - it will energize you for the day
80/20 Rule - Eat at least 80% of things that grow and
no more than 20% of things that walk
Think Before You Eat - Before you eat, ask yourself,
“Am I really hungry?”
Do NOT Skip Meals - it wreaks havoc on your
metabolism and often leads to over eating when you do eat
your next meal
Keep Fruit Handy – especially for that afternoon
craving of a snack, the natural sugar of fruit along with
other vitamins is better for you than candy, something
processed or salty and most likely, lower in calories.
Protein - After a sweet treat have a slice of turkey to
keep you from wanting more sweets.
Eat slowly - eat with your non-dominant hand it will
slow your eating and you’ll feel fuller, faster
Portion Control – weigh your food so you can learn
what truly is a portion; for example, most restaurants give
patrons 2-3 portions on a plate!
Get Plenty Of Rest – lack of sleep increases the
appetite hormone Ghrelin
Cut Sodium and Carbonation - put the soda down and
walk away, instead keep a pitcher full of water with
cucumbers in it; it’s refreshing, it looks pretty and feels like
a treat.
Store Leftovers First - Serve yourself and then
immediately pack the leftovers in containers and place in
the fridge.
Quick Walk - Take a 15-minute walk after each meal
to burn a quick 100 calories.
Finally, here are some power food pairings:
• apple slices with peanut butter
• berries with cottage cheese
• bell peppers and hummus
• broccoli and low-fat cheese
These combinations combine fiber and proteins to
produce a greater sense of fullness, nix carb cravings and
banish hunger!
DAVE’S TENNIS TIP
BRING POSITIVE ENERGY TO PLAY YOUR
BEST TENNIS
Here are three things to add something positive to your
match. 1.) Time your meal so you eat a moderate amount
of protein, carbs, and healthy omega-3 fats about 60 to 90
minutes before the match. Also, be sure to hydrate
thoroughly 2.) Get going in the warm up! Jog to pick up
balls after the rallies. Keep your heart rate up! Break a
sweat so your muscles are loose. Rafa Nadal is a great
example to watch. He brings great energy to the court for
every match! 3.) Keep that bounce in your step. Whether
you are changing sides or just going to pick up a ball,
keeping your head up and taking brisk steps show positive
body language and helps keep you focused on the task at
hand-winning the match! Good luck!
WINTER SPECIALS
3 & Me Clinic Special- This is a great way to improve your
game! First, it’s easier to get 3 players of similar ability
together. Second, it’s very economical because three
players split the cost. Finally, our Pro, Dave Brown, fills in
as a fourth for play and strategy. Sign up for 5 one hour
sessions for only $99.00. Can’t find three players? Ask Dave
to put together a group of like abilities. Call him at 386-
