Welcome back to our members who have been away and 

thank you to all the members who stayed with us this summer, 

we greatly appreciate your support. It certainly was a busy 

summer for our golf course maintenance staff. The constant 

heat index of 100 degrees did not hamper the crew’s efforts, 

thank you Brad Tucker & Jim Earley for a great job on the 

bunker renovations and tee box restoration projects. Our hope 

is to continue to work on future projects throughout the year 

to provide our member’s with the very best course conditions. 

We have a full tournament and events calendar planned 

for both golf & tennis as well as several new fitness classes 

designed for all levels of activity. Our Social Advisory 

committee has been working with the Food & Beverage staff 

and have some new and exciting activities planned. So mark 

your calendars, your support and participation in all club 

venues is vital to the growth of the Club. On behalf of the 

entire staff please know that your suggestions and comments 

are always welcome and we look forward to a great season 

ahead. 

Going green is something that the Club will be trending 

towards over the next year. Newsletters, statements and other 

printed announcements are extremely expensive and 

adversely affect the environment; paper requires trees, ink can 

be toxic and it all ultimately ends up in a landfill. Trending to 

paperless also is a cost savings benefit to the Clubs overall 

operating expense line by reducing printing, postage and 

office expenses. 

Our hope is to eventually eliminate the printed version of 

the newsletter as the new Club website becomes more 

complete. With this in mind, please take the time to view the

upcoming events, information and activities. We hope you 

enjoy the new site and welcome any comments or suggestions.

At last the Fall season is upon us and the cooler 

temperatures are soon to follow. With the changing of the 

leaves some of the best weather of the year will follow for 

being outdoors. Whether you are simply taking a walk 

through the community, playing some golf, tennis or just 

sitting by the pool. Fall is definitely one of the best times of 

year for doing all the above and more. This time of year also 

embarks on our busiest time at the Clubs. With this, we are 

very much looking forward to another very busy calendar of 

events ranging from social functions, fitness competitions, 

tennis and golf tournaments. Your support in these events is 

very much appreciated and on behalf of the entire staff we 

are looking forward to another great season. Enjoy the Bay, 

this is truly a very special place to live and play. 

SAVING WATER RESOURCES 

Water conservation may seem unnecessary in a state 

surrounded by water, but not all of that water is readily 

available for drinking or irrigation. Add to that the fact 

that thousands of people are moving to our state each 

month, increasing the demands on freshwater supplies. 

In the St. Johns River Water Management District, 

more than 90 percent of the water we use comes from 

groundwater, water drawn from underground aquifers. 

Though Florida usually receives about 50 inches of rain 

each year, only about 13 inches of water seeps into the 

ground to replenish underground aquifers. This 

groundwater source will not be able to meet all future 

demands. Looking at all these factors, it's easy to see why 

water conservation is important and necessary in our 

homes, schools and businesses and why water 

conservation is a key strategy to sustaining Florida's 

water. By following a few simple steps, you can save 

thousands of gallons of water each year. And, if you 

conserve water, you will also save energy and money.

FIRE & EMERGENCY ACCESS 

Parking in the front circle of the CDB clubhouse is 

limited to drop off or pick up services. This is a fire & 

emergency vehicle lane and code prohibits both 

vehicles & golf carts from parking there. 8126. 

Handicap parking is permitted; however, vehicles must 

be parked on the left side and not directly in front of 

access areas. We ask that all golf carts park in the cart 

staging area adjacent to the golf shop entrance. We 

appreciate your cooperation in helping to keep the 

emergency & delivery areas accessible at all times.

TIP FROM THE TOP 

“Squaring the Clubface” 

One of the most difficult challenges playing golf is 

returning the clubface to a square position at impact. 

Squaring the clubface at impact promotes a straighter 

flight of the ball and more consistently solid contact. 

Not so accomplished players tend to manipulate the 

clubface throughout the swing by twisting their arms 

and hands which makes the impact position very 

inconsistent and leads to errant shots. Use the 

following tip to help you square the clubface more 

often at impact and improve your overall ball striking. 

Address the ball with the clubface square to the 

target. Swing the club until your hands are in a waist 

high position and the shaft is parallel to the ground. 

Stop there and take a look at the position of the 

clubface. The toe of the club should be pointing up 

toward the sky. If the toe is pointing behind you, the 

face is too open. If the toe is pointing in front of you, 

the clubface is too closed. 

Now swing through the ball until your hands are at 

hip level and the club is again parallel to the ground in 

front of you. The toe of the club should be pointing 

toward the sky as it was in the backswing. This ensures 

that the clubface is square through impact. 

Practice this drill until you are able to maintain a 

square position throughout impact. 

FSGA MID SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP 

Plantation Bay hosted the 2010 FSGA Mid-Senior 

Championship August 20th-22nd on the Prestwick and 

Club de Bonmont courses. 136 of Florida’s best amateur 

players age 40 and above competed over 54 holes of stoke 

play competition. The competition culminated with a 

sudden death playoff on #18 at Club de Bonmont with 

Bobby Bird defeating Alan Pope to take home the 

championship. Both gentleman finished the 54 holes of 

stoke play at 8 under par. Congratulations are in order for 

our golf course maintenance staffs led by Brad Tucker at 

Club de Bonmont and Jimie Earley at Prestwick. The 

players and FSGA staff members marveled at the excellent 

conditions provided by Plantation Bay for this year’s 

tournament.


PRESTWICK WOMEN’S 

GOLF ASSOCIATION 

The committee is looking forward to kicking off our 

new season on September 28th with a scramble format, 

opening day meeting and luncheon. Prestwick is hosting a 

fun day with the women from the CDB Women’s 

Association on October 19th. November 2nd is our Three 

Jills and a Jack event in which our Men’s Association also 

participates. December 14th is the date for the Holiday 

Scramble with the Prestwick Niners. The PWGA 

participates in three interclub matches and we have a full 

slate of competitions scheduled for the fall months. The 

VIP group plays at Cypress Head on October 4th, at 

Victoria Hills on November 1st, and we host VIP at 

Prestwick on December 6th. Check your league book and 

come on out to qualify and support the team. Seagals plays 

at Grand Haven on October 11th, at Marsh Creek on 

November 15th and at Hammock Dunes on December 

15th. We host WPC at Prestwick on October 25th and 

play at Grand Haven on December 6th. All are welcome 

to sign up for the teams. On October 14th, CDB will be 

hosting the annual Rally for the Cure event. This year, 

men and women will be participating. We encourage your 

support of this very important event. Let’s make this event 

better than ever!!

CLUB DE BONMONT NINERS 

Well it’s been a long hot summer and the CDB Niners 

are glad to welcome in the fall season and the cooler 

weather. We kicked off our season, Sept.2 with a scramble. 

On September 30, we attended the 1 st Coastal Niners 

event at Hammock Beach. It’s always great to play these 

places at such a reduced rate. We have many things 

planned this fall, additional Coastal Niner events; October 

27 at Halifax, and December 6 at Grand Haven. Look for 

the signup sheets for these in the near future. October 7 

will be the opening day meeting and October 14, we will 

be participating in the Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament 

here at CDB. I hope everyone will contribute by playing, 

donating items and coming out to support this event for a 

cause that strikes too many women. Also in October, we 

will have our annual Hubby/Friend Scramble (28 th ) that 

will begin in the afternoon with a great dinner afterwards. 

This event is always well attended. This December, the 

Niners will be supporting Council on Aging with our 

Angels for seniors as well as holding our annual Cookie 

Luncheon on December 14.

PRESTWICK MEN’S 


Welcome back snowbirds! Maybe a few of you were 

back in time for our popular Prestwick Ryder Cup held 

September 20-22. The format consisted of alternate shots, 

two-man bet ball, and match play, concluding with an 

awards ceremony and dinner with spouses/significant 

others at Club De Bonmont. 

Right now Fred Wallen, Tournament Director, is 

working out the final details on our next away event to be 

held in October (date to be determined). Fred is noted for 

putting together outstanding away games, so this next 

event should be a winner. 

And, thanks (congratulations?) to those of you who 

played through the record-breaking heat of summer 2010. 

At least we know that the next five to six months will be 

one of the reasons we decided to move to Plantation Bay.

CLUB DE BONMONT WOMEN’S 


Welcome to the CDBWGA 2010-2011 Golf Season. 

We began play on Thursday, September 9th with a 

welcoming luncheon and “Shamble”. Our next major golf 

event of the season will be held on Thursday, October 14th 

with ALL the ladies of Plantation Bay for our annual 

“Rally for the Cure”. November 4th, we will have our 

membership meeting and luncheon after the tournament of 

“Two Best Net Balls” of the foursome. We will ask each 

member of donate $10 to our Outreach Program so that our 

Outreach Committee (chaired by Val Nicholson) can begin 

ordering Thanksgiving Dinners for four needy families in 

Flagler County. We will also begin collecting cans and nonperishable 

food for these families. There will be no play on 

November 11th due to the Plantation Bay Ladies Member 

Guest held November 9-11th. Our Annual Christmas 

Luncheon and Scramble with the CDB Niners on 

December 9th. We always have a great turnout and enjoy 

playing golf with our good friends. No Thursday 

tournament for December 23 or the 30th due to the 

holidays. May I be the first to wish you all a very happy and 

healthy holiday season.

PRESTWICK NINERS 

The 2010 / 2011 season opened with a round of 

“Wacky Golf” on September 8th. Our “Fall Treat” (don’t 

lose that orange ball!) is another fun game coming up in 

October. 

This year we again travel to neighboring courses as part 

of the Coastal Niners organization. Our match at the end 

of September was at the beautiful ocean course at 

Hammock Beach. In October, we will join our friends at 

the Halifax Plantation Golf Club. Before the year ends we 

will be off again to play with our Coastal Niner friends at 

Grand Haven. 

Let’s not forget the "Rally for the Cure" on October 

14th. This will certainly prove to be a very successful fund 

raiser. In December, we kick off the Christmas season 

hosting the “Holiday Scramble” tournament and collecting 

donations to support the “Toys for Tots” drive. 

We are all looking forward to the fun filled three 

months ahead of us. 

If you would like to play nine holes of golf in a relaxed 

and friendly atmosphere, join us on Wednesday mornings 

for a 9:00 a.m. Shotgun start at the Prestwick Clubhouse.

CLUB DE BONMONT MEN’S 


We anxiously await the return of the snowbirds as well 

as the cooler weather. I hopefully anticipate that we will see 

a surge in the number of CDBMGA golfers on Wednesdays. 

Kudos to those who braved the high 90’s temperatures and 

high humidity to come out and play with us this summer. 

For all of you new Plantation Bay members, come on out on 

Wednesdays’ at 8:30am and enjoy a great day of golf. The 

winners of our quarterly monetary prizes were: 1st Tom 

Truesdell-$125, 2nd and 3rd prizes were split between Greg 

Widerberg, Tony Branca and Lee Aldrich, each winning 

$42. We also have weekly prizes and additional prizes for 

special events. You cannot win if you do not participate. 

The annual meeting, election of CDBMGA officers and 

Luncheon , will take place on November 1st. The newly 

elected officers will assume their positions on the 1st of 

December. As my tenure as President comes to a close I 

would like to thank all of the members, and especially the 

officers and pro-shop personnel for their support and

Turf Talk… 

It was a busy Summer 2010 for the golf 

maintenance departments here at Plantation Bay. We 

started in May with the complete aerification of both 

courses followed by our yearly wall-to-wall pesticide 

applications. 

Following these operations the Prestwick staff 

continued the tee renovation project. Tees were 

leveled and resodded on holes 7, 10, and 11. 

At CDB it was a summer of bunker changes. The 

staff at CDB made changes to the bunkers on holes 7, 

8, 10, and 11. On the seventh hole the first fairway 

bunker was completely filled in. On the eighth hole 

the first fairway bunker on the right was reduced in size 

by about 3,000 square feet. On the tenth hole half of 

the first fairway bunker was removed. And, on the 

eleventh hole the first fairway bunker on the right was 

reduced in size by about 4,000 square feet. In total 

these projects consumed 21,000 square feet of new sod 

and 830 tons of fill soil. 

We also made changes to the green surrounds on 

holes 1, 4, and 8. The large chipping areas around these 

greens have been allowed to grow to rough height. In 

these areas we are making an effort to keep the golf ball 

from rolling too far away from the green. 

All of these changes to the North and South 

courses were conducted with regards to concerns 

pointed out in the member survey taken in April of 

this year. Both CDB and Prestwick courses are 

planning to overseed the greens and tees this year.

everyone a fun and safe 2010-2011 golf season.

Fitness News 

Time Flies…… It is hard to believe we are heading into 

the last quarter of the year. 

Weight Watchers arrived at Plantation Bay. 

We were successful in securing this as a host meeting 

place. Currently we have 24 enrolled in our first 12 week 

session. We will start our second 12-week session on 

October 20. If you missed the first session come join the 

group and see great results– learn to eat smarter, start 

selecting foods for better health, receive great snack ideas, 

easy meals, weekly accountability and grocery shopping 

tips. Also, reap the benefits of a great support group and 

inspirational meetings in your own neighborhood, plus the 

obvious… losing those extra pounds…. 

In September we hosted our second annual Adult 

Olympics. What a great day!! If you missed it, we hope to 

see you in 2011. 

New Classes coming in October. 

Chair Yoga will be back - Chair Yoga is beneficial for 

anyone with limited mobility due to arthritis, damaged 

joints, multiple sclerosis, back issues and/or even someone 

recovering from surgery. A perfect class to ease back into 

gentle exercise. 

FITNESS NEWS 

SIT n’ FIT class. This class will also utilize chairs – 

participants will have fun as they increase their muscular 

strength, flexibility and improve there ability to 

accomplish every day living skills. Hand held weights and 

tubing will be used as additional tools. 

October we will be sponsoring a Health and Wellness 

day. Details and the date will be announced. 

Do Something for Others. On Saturday, November 6, 

we will have a 5K Walk, 10K Bike and Tennis Round 

Robin – it will be a Food Drive for Thanksgiving. 9247 

Registration will be open to the community to increase 

participation and donations… It will be cooler and a great 

time to get together with friends, neighbors and be outside. 

Holiday Time. Gift Certificates are perfect for those 

hard to please or hard to shop for on your Holiday shopping 

list. They can be used towards our Spa Services or utilized 

in our Pro Shop.

WHEN TO CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF THE 

BALL 

Cross court rallies in a doubles game can be frustrating 

and tempt us to try the wrong shot at the wrong time. Keep 

your opponent deep in their own court while you’re in “the 

backcourt battle”. Consider changing the direction of the 

ball when: 

1. You get a short ball 

2. You are in a good balanced position and the ball is 

in your strike zone. 

3. You feel you can hit a winner or force your 

opponent to make a mistake. 

Being patient and waiting for one of the above 

conditions will cut down on mistakes and build confidence 

in your shot selections. Good luck! 

DAVE BROWN HONORED AS 

USPTA “PRO OF THE YEAR” 

Our own Dave Brown was recently honored as 

“District Pro of the Year” at the USPTA Florida Division 

annual convention in the Florida Keys. The service award 

recognizes Dave’s commitment to the community by 

helping to raise funds for United Way, the ARC & the 

Volusia Literacy Council. In addition, Dave’s serves two 

non-profit tennis organizations, The Volusia Tennis 

Network, and the Florida Tennis Center Foundation.
