The US Women’s Sectional Qualifying tournament was
held in May with 78 ladies, including our Golf Pro Ulrika,
competing for 5 available spots to the US Open scheduled in
July. This was the third year the Club was honored to host
this prestigious event. Thank you to member & USGA
Official Kathy Light who was instrumental in organizing the
event and allowing us to showcase our golf courses. Mrs.
Light along with husband Ed and numerous members as
volunteers worked tirelessly to help facilitate the
tournament and play off round the following day. Thank you
also to our golf maintenance staff for the long hours worked
to provide superior course conditions.
Over the past season members have shown tremendous
support in all venues of the club activities, tournaments and
social events. The recent Tour of Italy night provided a
wonderful evening of great food and entertainment by Anna
Maria to a sold out crowd. We have so many talented
members and were thrilled to hear Anna Maria perform
songs written by Mr. Rich Nannariello. Anna Maria will
return in October and I hear new songs by Mr. Nannariello
will also be featured so watch for details and make your
reservations early as this event is quick to sell out.
Speaking of talented members, Tom Cruise, aka Carl
Dean, assisted by Susan Bayley, Mimi Beppu and Ericka
Trawinski stole the show at Karaoke night . If you have not
attended our Dinner & Karoake nights you are missing out
on the fun and should plan on attending the next one on
July 14th.
Welcome to all of our new members and my sincerest
appreciation to all members for your continued support of
the Club. Have a great summer.
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Dear Plantation Bay Members,
As we enter the summer season the Club would like to
thank you for another great Spring Season. I hope you
enjoyed and continue to enjoy all that Plantation Bay has
to offer.
On a different note, you probably already know the
Club has a very aggressive Membership Drive that is
underway. This drive is geared to all the residents in
Plantation Bay that aren’t members of the club in any
capacity. Our biggest goal is to reach out to everyone so
they know how much fun they are missing and how many
social opportunities they are missing by not becoming
members. With this, if your neighbor or anyone you know
isn’t a member, please talk to them and tell them to come
see us!!
Lastly, another big thank you for making Plantation
Bay such a great community. Have a great summer and
enjoy all Plantation Bay has to offer.
Dear Brad,
Once again,
thank you for
the wonderful
job that you and
your staff did preparing the golf course for the U.S.
Women’s Open Sectional Qualifier held at Plantation
Bay on May 15, 2012 and completed on May 16th
due to a rain delay and darkness. As always, I
received many compliments about the beauty and
condition of the golf course.
You did a fabulous job getting the golf course
playable after the inch and a half of rain in twenty
minutes that we received. Plantation Bay is fortunate
to have you as the Superintendent.
Again, thank you for everything!
Very Truly Yours,
Kathy Light
Hi Maria,
We just wanted you to know
that our friend, Simon Wakefield,
THANK YOU
FROM ULRIKA
Thank you to all the
members that came out and
supported me for the U.S.
Women's Open Qualifier! I had
a great time and it was so much
fun to walk down the fairways
seeing so many friendly faces
cheering me on. I hope the qualifier stays at Plantation Bay
for years to come and I will get another shot at making it.
Prepping Yourself for Summer Golf
Playing golf during the summer months in the
south takes a bit of preparation to make sure your
round is enjoyable and you are competing at your
optimum. There are some things you can do prior and
during your round to ensure that you can maintain
your swing and focus when playing in hotter
temperatures and humidity. As you know, maintaining
your mental focus and tempo of your swing will lead to
consistency in ball striking and scoring. Use the
following tips to keep yourself comfortable and cool on
the course!
• Fluids and Electrolytes are the key to keeping your
energy and focus on the course. Make sure to
hydrate prior to and during your round. Too many
golfers make the mistake of waiting until they are
already in the heat to start the hydration process.
• Snack throughout your round so that your body has
fuel to burn throughout the day. Waiting until after
your play to eat will cause your energy and focus to
fluctuate towards the end of your round of golf.
• Wear a hat that affords wide coverage of your head
and neck area. Keeping these areas shaded will
keep your core temperature down and ensure that
you keep from experiencing sunburn.
• Pick times of the day to play when temperatures
and humidity are at their lowest. If you must play
during the middle of the day in the summer, make
sure to prepare your best so that you can be as
comfortable as possible to maintain mental focus.
TWILIGHT GOLF
Twilight golf at Prestwick is a great time to enjoy a casual
round of golf and competition as well as an opportunity to
meet new people. We tee off at 4:30pm each Thursday on
the Prestwick course. Stop by the Prestwick golf shop to
sign up or learn more about this fun weekly event. Causal
Dinner menu and happy hour is offered 5-8PM.
PRO TIPS BY ULRIKA SMITH
With a creative short game, you can save a lot of
strokes around the greens. A good rule of thumb is
anytime you can get the ball rolling as soon as possible,
the fewer margins for error. One club that comes in
very handy around the greens is the hybrid. The reason
why it works so well is that it has enough loft for the
ball to get slightly airborne so it doesn’t get caught up
in the grain. The other advantage is that the hybrid
slides through grass easily because of its rounded sole.
Hybrids come in a variety of lofts (18, 21, 23, 27 etc.)
but if you don’t yet own one, a fairway wood (7, 5, 3
wood) will do the trick as well.
How to play the shot:
Think of this shot as a putt, only replaced by your
hybrid/fairway wood. Place your hands farther down
the grip, almost to the shaft and use your regular grip
or putting grip. Take a narrow stance as well as get
really close to the ball. You can tweak the ball position
to your liking, just remember that a ball placed closer
to the target side in your stance will come out a little
higher and softer than one in the back of your stance.
The ball tends to come out with a lot of speed, so
you can hit this shot very gently and still get the
desired result.
When to play the shot:
• When your ball is nestled up right between the
fringe and the green.
• When you are off the green and have a little too
much fringe to go through for the putter.
• When your ball is caught up in the rough right
next to the green.
• When you face a bare spot that will be tricky to
chip from.
for the coming year.
Turf Talk…
Summer has arrived. For the golf maintenance
staff, the biggest story so far for 2012 was the
exceptionally warm and dry winter. Although these
conditions created a very good season for golfing, it has
created a very unusual set of circumstances for us here
maintaining the courses. After speaking to several
fellow superintendents in our area, all of us have
noticed differences in several areas. First, early
emergence of mole cricket damage. Typically, here in
central Florida, we begin to see damage from these
insects around the middle of April. This year we
started seeing their damage in the beginning of March.
Second, emergence of summer annual weeds. Difficult
to control weeds like goose and crabgrass were also
11/2 to 2 months earlier than normal. These two major
concerns forced superintendents in our area to step
outside the box. We have all been forced to start our
treatment programs earlier than normal. Thirdly, rough
mowing. This past spring, regularly scheduled rough
mowing started a full 2 months ahead of normal.
What does all this mean? Basically, recent weather
has lengthened the growing season for Florida’s warm
season turfgrasses. That sounds like a good thing, and
in many ways it is. But, it has increased the resources
we as a club, must commit to keep the courses in the
best possible condition. More mole crickets, translates
to more insecticides. More weeds means more
herbicides. And, more rough mowing requires more gas
and diesel. Even in difficult economic times,
Plantation Bay is committing these resources. It is
important to all of the staff here to make every effort to
provide our members with a quality golf experience.
that this does not improve the lie of the ball, the area of his intended stance
or swing or his line of play.
A player is not necessarily entitled to see his ball when making a stroke.
In a hazard, if a ball is believed to be covered by loose impediments or sand,
the player may remove by probing or raking with a club or otherwise, as many
loose impediments or as much sand as will enable him to see a part of the ball.
If an excess is removed, there is no penalty and the ball must be re-covered so
that only a part of the ball is visible. If the ball is moved during the removal,
there is no penalty; the ball must be replaced and, if necessary, re-covered.
If a ball lying in or on an obstruction or in an abnormal ground condition
is accidentally moved during search, there is no penalty; the ball must be
replaced, unless the player elects to proceed under Rule 24-1b, 24-2b or 25-
1b as applicable. If the player replaces the ball, he may still proceed under
Rule 24-1b, 24-2b or 25-1b if applicable.
If a ball is believed to be lying in water in a water hazard, the player may
probe for it with a club or otherwise. If the ball is moved in probing, it must
be replaced, unless the player elects to proceed under Rule 26-1. There is no
penalty for causing the ball to move, provided the movement of the ball was
directly attributable to the specific act of probing. Otherwise, the player
incurs a penalty stroke under Rule 18-2a.
Penalty for Breach of Rule 12-1: Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play –
Two strokes
Fitness News
We’re half way into 2012—have you stuck to your new
year’s resolutions regarding your diet and exercise regimen?
Have you made the changes you wanted to maintain a
healthy weight? Is your body as toned as you’d like? If
you’re not where you hoped you’d be by now, here are a few
tips to help you reach your goals and enjoy fun in the sun
this summer.
DIET
1. Choose to eat lean poultry and fish as your protein
choice more during the week than red meat and when
eating red meat, choose lean cuts.
2. Select fruits, low-fat dairy and whole grain products,
especially ones high in fiber like raspberries (1 cup=8.0
fiber grams) or lentils (1 cup=15.6 fiber grams)
3. Limit sweets and complex carbohydrates (basically
baked goods made with white flour)
4. Eat your vegetables raw and/or lightly sautéed; the
longer you cook a vegetable the fewer nutrients it
retains.
5. Use lots of fresh herbs and aromatic spices; studies
have shown that consuming “smelly” foods curbs
consumption, so give it a try!
6. Dining out tends to increase in the summer—who
wants to be in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove—
so when dining out, order your dressings on the side
and always chose steamed, broiled or sautéed over
fried. The Club Menus offer a wonderful selection of
Healthy Salads, Fresh Seafood, Chicken; Vegetarian
Choices are always available upon request.
7. The big one—portion control; check packaging and
websites regarding recommended food portions and
what you find may surprise you .For example, a single
serving of pasta is two ounces and protein portions are
usually six to eight ounces.
One more thing to consider is soda consumption. A
can of 12-ounce can of soda has about 140 calories and 39
grams of sugar! Sometimes it’s hard to make a change if
you’ve been drinking a lot of soda for years or even decades,
but you can make changes gradually. If you currently drink
regular soda, try switching to diet soda, at least it cuts some
calories and sugar from your daily caloric intake. Try to add
one more eight-ounce glass of water to current water
intake. As you become accustomed to drinking water try
replacing one soda with a glass of water.
Speaking of water, it’s important to stay hydrated when
doing physical activity, whether it’s exercise or gardening!
Take regular breaks to drink water so you can avoid
dehydration because dehydration can lead to serious effects
on your health.
FITNESS NEWS
EXERCISE
Change up your exercise routine. If you work out at the
Fitness Center, take some classes that you’ve never taken
before to work your muscles in a new way. You can also
alternate a harder, faster workout with your regular
regimen, such as circuit training on the machines. Circuit
training moves you through the machines faster; that is,
lower weights, reps based on time and less rest between reps
as you move between machines. Circuit training has a total
conditioning effect on the body as it challenges the
cardiovascular system. The aerobic effect can burn extra
calories for hours well after you have finished exercising.
Avoid exercising close to bedtime because it makes it
more difficult to fall asleep due to the increase of
adrenaline in your system. Research shows that without
proper sleep, you burn fewer calories and less fat. Develop
a regular sleep schedule, relax before bed (turn off the
technology!) and keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.
If weights and/or cardio is your thing, we will be
launching new classes in the pool. With the advantage of
buoyancy, impact to the bones and joints is lessened
significantly. Then added resistance, or drag, due to the
force of the water, can give you benefits similar to strength
training! Watch for announcements!!
ASCM – American College of Sports Medicine –
recommends that most adults achieve the following:
• At least 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic
activity 5 or more days per week, OR
• At least 20-25 minutes of vigorous intensity
aerobic activity on 3 or more days per week, OR
• At least 20-30 minutes combined of moderate to
vigorous intensity aerobic exercise 3-5 days per
week.
• And – adults should do muscle strength exercises
at a moderate to vigorous intensity that involves
all the major muscle groups on at least 2 or more
days per week.
SPA NEWS
Summer time exercise and activities can leave your
skin dry and damaged, try our new Ultra Hydration Facial
with anti-aging benefits. The Ultra Hydration Facial uses
four fruit acids, antioxidant rich grape-seed oil, and a twomask
phase that leaves thirsty skin refreshed and radiant.
For a refreshing thirst quencher try this: 1/2cup of
Cranberry Juice Cocktail, 1 tsp. of fresh lime juice, 1 cup of
ice cubes – Blend together in blender to create a slushy
sensation. (Only 70 calories)
USPTA Master Professional
DAVE’S TENNIS TIP
IT’S HOT OUT THERE! HERE’S WHAT TO DO.
For Floridians who play a lot of tennis, many of these
things are a no-brainer. However, as we hit the heart of
summer and early fall, review this checklist and be sure you
are always prepared.
• Hydration- drink plenty of water or sports drink before
you go to the courts and, of course, continue to replenish
while you play.
• Wear wrist bands. They’re not expensive, last forever,
and keep the sweat from rolling down into your hand
• Replace your grip or use a fresh overwrap. Again, this
is not expensive to do and gives you much better feel of the
racquet so you hit more consistently.
• Bring a fresh clean towel to the courts and use it on the
changeovers. On very hot and humid days, I also bring a
small hand towel and wear it on my waistband to dry the
racquet handle and my hand between points, if necessary.
• Sunscreen is a must! Florida is known as the sunshine
state, which is great, but too much sun will damage your
skin.
• Wear sunglasses. I was shocked to hear a leading
dermatologist at one of our USPTA pro conventions say
how our eyes can get damaged from sunburn!
• Stick a dry shirt or top in your tennis bag and change
it between sets if appropriate. Guys can usually get away
with a quick change right on court. Ladies, hopefully there
is a restroom nearby.
• There is a really “cool” product on the market called
“chilly pads” www.coolsportga.com. When you wet this
product it’s always cold! It’s great to wrap around your neck
on changeovers to keep your body temperature down.
• Stretch after you play. This should be part of your “cool
down”. Your muscles are warm, so they’ll stretch easier.
Besides you’ll feel much better the next morning!
Good Luck!!
