Well as I stated in the last newsletter my fall hunting season was off to a great start…..lately…. not
so great! I lost my good binoculars while searching for deer in Burwell. I had to cancel a hunt I
was hosting for Reo Wilde because it looks like EHD has reduced the herd in Burwell significantly.
My Kansas hunt started with a poor shot (too low) on a nice non-typical….couldn’t find
him…..then, while continuing my search for the buck a couple days later, my bow fell off the Bad
Boy Buggy and bounced on a concrete bridge, creating a good deal of “road rash” to my bow. It will
get better I am sure!!!!
Our Pot-luck and club meeting on the 17 th went well. The membership approved the new by-laws.
There was some discussion on a part of the changes that will be looked at by the board in the near
future to see if any small changes need to be made. The Budget Committee presented a budget to
the membership which I will discuss in another article. Results of the election are as follows: President:
Trent Allen, Bowhunter Rep: Adam Jirorsky, Secretary: John Elliott, Newsletter Editor:
Michael Welsh, Youth Coordinator: Mike Yost. Congratulations to the new board members.
They will take over their board positions at the end of the December board meeting. Please welcome
them and give them your support.
Around 200 members (the ones we had current e-mail address for) received a survey from the club
concerning your opinions on various items. Thank you for responding to the survey. Your board
will review the results, and hopefully be better informed on the direction the membership wants!
We have a group of five club members who have volunteered to run our 3-D leagues this winter so
I would like to send out a big Prairie Bowmen thank you to Robin and his crew. Winter 3-D
leagues are a very important part of our clubs financial health and generate the most participation
from our club members.
I hope you all have a great Holiday season with family and friends.
Shoot straight….. Tom
Sorry, I did not get the new member for July in the August newsletter but was on vacation. So here
is an update. July we had the Monte Kerchal family which includes April, Adison, Colt and Bridger.
August brought us the Matthew Jockers family of Angela, Audrey, and son Matthew. We also had
the Mark Vanek family of Diane, Emily, Ryan and Nicholas. In September we have the Bob Barie
clan of Koni, Sally, Maggie, Annie and Robert. The last family in September we welcome back the
Chris Eiland family of Kaye, Sidney and Izaac. We also had two singles join us in Erin Pedigo and
Michael Welsh. Now to finally catch you all up to date in that October we have new members in
Amanda Kottas and the David Sobotka family of Devin, Kylie and Michaela.
Please make all these new members welcome to the Prairie Bowmen family and extend them every
courtesy and lend them the helping hand so to speak. Again welcome on behalf of the club to the
greatest club in Nebraska. MAY YOUR ARROWS BE STRAIGHT AND TRUE TO THE ITS
MARK.
I just wanted to start off by introducing myself. My name is Adam Jirovsky and
I am the new Bowhunter rep. A little history about myself. I grew up around
the Seward area till I was 19. I then joined the Air Force in 2000 and during my
time in the Air Force I traveled around and shot a lot of National 3D shoots in
many states. In March of this year I got out of the Air Force after 12 years to
peruse a lifelong dream and travel around and shoot archery. I shot everywhere
from Washington to Florida. I recently took a job in Seward working at Hughes
Brothers on 2 nd shift.
I am currently in the process of buying a house by Malcolm. I have been shooting
archery for as long as I can remember. When I was 14, I took Bowhunters
ed in Lincoln and had my field day at the Prairie Bowmen outdoor range. As a
young archer I was in awe. I thought that it was the coolest thing in the world.
I asked my dad if I could join and he told me no I can shoot at the house because
he wasn’t going to pay $95.00 for me to join. So ever since then I always
wanted to be a member of the Prairie bowmen. I have been members of ranges
in California, Montana, Florida and Georgia. I have been to dozens of ranges
and Prairie Bowmen in my opinion is one of the nicest ranges I have been to.
When I joined in March of this year I figured it was probably a couple hundred
dollars to join. When I was a member of a club in Florida and they charged
$250.00 and they didn’t have an indoor range. I was shocked to hear that it was
still the same $95.00 to join. I used the indoor and outdoor range a lot this past
summer. I’m sure a lot of you seen my car there. The White Toyota with Montana
plates. That’s me the tall skinny goofy looking guy shooting with a stool
wearing dress shoes standing in the sun shooting when it was 100 plus degrees
outside. Back to the membership price. In the survey that was emailed out people
complained about the price being too much. Well 5 years ago a top of the
line Mathews or Hoyt cost $700.00. Now they are over a $1000.00. The cost of
property taxes and gas and everything has gone up except the dues. One thing I
don’t want to see is this club go under. It is very near and dear to me. I shoot at
a professional level and utilize the indoor range as much as the outdoor range. I
would not be opposed to having the dues go up if needed. I think they should
but that’s just me I am willing to pay more. I mean the cost of everything else
has. I just don’t want to see the club go under.
I am also willing to help anyone out with equipment or any question about archery
you have please feel free to contact me at any time. I own everything an
archery shop has and then some to work on bows. I even make my own strings.
I will help any club member out free of charge as long as it doesn’t cost me
equipment. I can build very good strings cheap for club members too. My
number is 406-750-1850. It’s a Montana number. I will be changing it to a local
number when I move into my house. Please feel free to contact me. I am
always looking for people to travel and shoot with. So call me, Tim Hendrix.
Not much to report.
Finally got started on the bathroom at the indoor range. Please have some patience with this inconvenience. I
work two jobs and have additional home projects that must be completed but plan to spend as much time as possible
on this project. The most difficult part is the floor. This is going to take a few hours on several days to prepare
due to the extremely poor condition.
Combinations have been changed at the indoor and outdoor ranges. If you did not get the new combination in
your last newsletter please contact John Elliott about your dues.
Please notice the flier for this year’s annual Prairie Bowmen indoor 3-D shoot. This is a one day only shoot.
This is a fun shoot that will definitely test your skills. As always, scoring is optional and all scores turned in will
be posted. Those of you that have paid your assessment are entitled to one free club event. This would be a great
way to start off the new year .Hope to see you all there.
As people who know me are aware, I try to be involved in fund raising and projects for the needy.
At this year’s indoor 3-d I would like to ask that all participants bring an item that we all take for granted but
is one of the most needed and requested items at the Lincoln Food Bank. TOILET PAPER. Many people associate
the food bank with only providing food for needy families but there are many normal every day items that are
desperately needed. Some other much needed items include soaps (bath and laundry), feminine hygiene items,
disposable razors and shaving cream, deodorants, disposable diapers and baby wipes.
Please go to the Lincoln food bank web site for a complete list of much needed non-food items.
As you all know, the Holidays are fast approaching and many people are struggling with everyday expenses.
So much so that Christmas presents and a Holiday meal aren’t even being considered.
The Salvation Army has a program to help these unfortunate families. It is called the ‘Adopt a Family’ program.
Participants (sponsors) take on the responsibility of providing presents and a meal for a needy family.
This year I am sponsoring a family of eleven through this program in the name of Prairie Bowmen Archery.
The financial responsibility for this endeavor will be between $400.00 and $450.00 to provide a healthy nutritious
meal and to put presents under the tree for a needy family.
I have already made a commitment to this and am fully willing to cover the cost myself. I am asking Prairie
Bowmen members to take this opportunity to join me in making someone’s Christmas this year truly an event to
remember. If you are one of the fortunate ones that have a little extra to spare please contact me with a donation
or simply mail it to me. You can ask to remain anonymous if you wish.
Please join me in representing Prairie Bowmen Archery through this awesome community outreach.
I would like to thank Prairie Bowmen for allowing me to serve as the Youth Education Coordinator for the last 9
years. I chose not to run again because of some serious health issues. I would like to wish Mike Yost the best of
luck as he takes over. I will still help out with the youth as time and health permits. I would like to also thank
Paul Eiland and
Jan Robertson for all of their time and assistance as my assistants and co teachers. I plan on remaining a member
of the club. The next Youth Archery Session Starts on January 5,2013 at the indoor range from 8:00am until
9:30 am.
Well that is all for now may your arrow always find its mark and the Good Lord Bless and Keep You during this
Holiday season.
Target League (indoor) $ 500.00
Donations
$ 31,563.00 $ 33,007.00
As you look at the budget
you will notice expected
expenses of around
$31,500 and income of
around $33,000. This is a
conservative budget, which
is what we must have. Last
year our expenses were
around $41,000 and our
income of around $35,000.
With a $6,000 shortfall
from last year you can see
why we needed to have the
“shooting for the future”
assessment. Only about
half of our members have
paid the assessment so far.
There has been a fair
amount of feedback wondering
why we needed to
have the assessment, and
some who have left the
club because they believe
we are wasting money.
We certainly spent about
$6,000 for new target material,
3-D targets, and
Saunders matts, banking on
income that we normally
receive. When we didn’t
make the expected income
from the fireworks stand,
the Nebraska Challenge,
our leagues and Cornhusker
State Games we had a shortfall. We can’t change the decisions we made last year but we can learn from them and try to do
better in the future.
As a club, our first obligation is to provide a place for our membership to shoot their bows. The desire of the club has always been
to have an indoor and outdoor facility with 24 hour access if possible. For at least the last 20 years we have had that. Today that
comes at a very high cost which dues alone cannot cover. When you look hard at the budget you can readily see that our ranges,
rent, mortgage, insurance, taxes, utilities and maintenance on those ranges cost your club around $24,313 per year. Our dues
income is around $21,807, for a difference of about $2,500; therefore dues alone do not cover the costs of our ranges. Those who
are members of our club only so they have a place to shoot, need the support of the club members who participate in the other opportunities
the club provides so that we can keep club dues lower for all. Sometimes I feel that many club members think our club
spends too much on tournaments, etc. and that causes the dues to be higher, when exactly the opposite is true. We have leagues,

tournaments, locker rent, State Games and youth programs to provide opportunities for our membership and to help cover the additional
costs of our ranges not covered by our dues. When we hold tournaments and have other programs we hope that we generate
more income than they cost. This additional income also helps offset our communications costs like the newsletter, fliers, and the
website as well as club awards. I hope this helps those who wonder where we spend the money to better understand. We need all of
our club members….and we need them to all pay the “shooting for the future” assessment! The more support our members give to
the club, the more the club can provide for the members.
When the Boosalis archery range was built many of our members elected to shoot there instead of our Galloway Range, for various
reasons. Some members dropped out of the club because they now had a free outdoor range where they could shoot! Our club has a
Visionary committee to look at what possibilities we have for the future of the club. Those possibilities could include things like the
sale of our current outdoor range, a different facility for indoor shooting, etc. I don’t believe we currently have anything on the table
at this point, but they are always looking. If anyone has comments or questions about anything in this report, please call me….308-
440-9535, text me, send me an e-mail; tnauman@auroracoop.com., I will be the president till the December board meeting. We
will have a new board for 2013 and they all want your input. We can’t fix things we don’t know about… complaining or grumbling
about it, doesn’t fix anything! Thanks TOM
T A R G E T R e p R e p o r t
2013 looks to be busy and exciting and the year that Prairie Bowmen is back in the target archery tournament world! In addition to
hosting the Cornhusker State Summer Games, we will be hosting our annual Presidents Day Shoot in February, The State Indoor
Target Tournament in March, The Iron Archer in June and the State Field/Hunter and Animal at the end of June. Plan on shooting
or come out and volunteer to be a part of each event. We can always use help!
Indoor target league will start on Tuesday January 8 th , 7:00 p.m. We will run a 5 week session of Fita/Vegas and then a 5 week
session of NFAA. This year we will be charging $6.00 per night with $1.00 going into a prize fund. The more shooters we have, the
more goes into the fund. You do not need to be a pro to shoot. Come on down and plan on having fun. If you are a beginner, there
are always people willing to help you. Let’s see if we can’t fill the place up this year! I will do my best to get the weekly results on
the website.
The spider-web targets are in need of repair and that will happen as soon as we get the new material, which is on order. We may
need some help with this, so an email will be sent out notifying the membership of a work day or night. This will be completed
before leagues and tournaments start! We are also planning to relocate and update the thermostats for the furnaces. They will be
relocated to an area where they cannot be shot.
So far, members are doing a pretty good job of paying for their paper targets. Thank you to everyone that has been participating
with this and please continue. Also, please make sure you clean up after yourself. Please put all used targets, and trash in the garbage,
not on the floor or tables.
Trent Allen is doing a raffle for a Rinehart 18-1 target. Tickets are $3.00 each or 4 for $10.00. Tickets will be sold at all tournaments,
3-d”s leagues, Joad and youth classes. Proceeds will go to the club. The drawing will be held on March 10 th at the State Indoor
Target Tournament.
Last but not least, is the upcoming Annual Prairie Bowmen Banquet. This year’s Banquet will be held on January 18 th at the Havelock
Social Hall. A flier with all the details can be found in the newsletter! Plan on coming out and having a good time and meeting
some new people.
