COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Military - World War I (continued)
Lot Type Grading Description Est $A
300 C C/D
Lot 298
1917 cover to a soldier serving abroad with 3d Roo + KGV 1d red tied by poor 'MONTAGUE/VIC' cds,
rare red registration label, redirected many times within France & England with no less than six
re-direction labels affixed to the face. Eventually the much-travelled & soiled envelope fell apart & the
two halves were affixed to the front & reverse of an Australian Base PO "ambulance" cover which was
endorsed "Re-enclosed at ABPO/London contents correspon/dence only". The OHMS envelope is
quite dessicated requiring extensive repairs. Despite faults, this is a remarkably visual item that
demonstrates the lengths to which the Army went to attempt delivery.
301 PS B - (c.) POW Envelope from Holdsworthy POW Camp with 28mm '.../FREE/---' printed at upper-right, to
Germany with Lt Col Holman h/s in violet & boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR SD' h/s in purple, endorsed
"O Picker B26 Eastern Compound/Holdsworthy" on the flap, minor blemishes.
302 C A
1918 (May 12) stampless cover from Germany to a German POW at "20 Comp 2 Messe/GCC
Liverpool/vier Holdsworthy", Hamburg machine cancel & Cologne '.../Frei-/gegeben/...' cachet in violet,
1940 cover to Sydney with KGVI 3d tied by 'RAILHEAD PO/RM1' cds (better b/s), superb strike of the
rare boxed 'Travelling PO/6 Aus Div/Reg No...' h/s in red.
1941 (Dec 20) "The A.I.F. News" (Christmas Issue) entire newspaper to England sent free-of-charge
by surface mail with 'A.I.F. FIELD P.O./NO 8' cds, a few blemishes. No Reserve.
1942-45 International Red Cross enquiry forms from a Jewish refugee in Australia to his family in
China (5) or Slovakia, two sent via Cairo (one also via Turkey), various Red Cross cachets, a few
faults. All with write-ups/translations. The sender was a "Dunera Boy". [Early in the War, the British
decided that refugees from Europe were a security risk, even though most were Jewish. The "Dunera"
was sent to Australia, crowded with as many mainly Jewish adults & children as possible. Conditions
were appalling & the incident created an international furore]{Page 46.5} (6)
