<strong>The</strong> Prince’s <strong>Drawing</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> aim of <strong>The</strong> Prince’s <strong>Drawing</strong> <strong>School</strong> is to raise the standard and profile of drawing<br />

through teaching and practice. It is one of only a few institutions offering in-depth, quality<br />

tuition for those who wish to develop their observational drawing skills.<br />

We need to learn to see and to draw properly again. In spite of the advances in technology,<br />

drawing by hand, eye and brain is still the most sophisticated and advanced way to organise our<br />

visual perceptions. Many art schools have diminished the role of drawing, but <strong>The</strong> Prince’s<br />

<strong>Drawing</strong> <strong>School</strong> believes it is vital for art and artists to continue questioning and exploring the<br />

<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>School</strong> runs from 2 - 27 July 2012. All courses run for one, two or three weeks, as<br />

stated, from 10am - 5pm, Monday to Friday.


<strong>The</strong> Prince’s <strong>Drawing</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>School</strong> / <strong>The</strong> <strong>Drawing</strong> Marathon<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Drawing</strong> Week Double Marathon<br />

10 or 5 day course: Monday 9 - Friday 13 July and Monday 16 - Friday 20 July<br />

Studio 1 / 10am-5pm<br />

An intensive two week course, specially designed for those students really interested in improving<br />

their drawing skills. Students will have the opportunity to work with four tutors over<br />

the two weeks — each week culminating in a critique of students’ work. <strong>The</strong> intention of the<br />

double marathon is for students to progress from one week to the next, however, students<br />

unable to commit to both weeks will be able to book on to either Part One or Part Two.<br />

Tutors: Robert Dukes and Harriet Miller<br />

<strong>Drawing</strong> from a life model in the studio, students will begin by making quick drawings,<br />

progressing to more sustained studies that consider the physical relationship of the model<br />

to their surroundings. Students will explore proportion and relationships of form, moving<br />

into linear sensitivity and tonal relationships. Discussion of the various reasons for making<br />

life-drawings will be encouraged.<br />

Part Two: Monday 16 – Friday 20 July (five days)<br />

Tutors: Charlotte Mann and Ann Dowker<br />

This week will give students the opportunity to draw both in the studio, from film and from<br />

the collections at <strong>The</strong> National Gallery, with poses from paintings studied being recreated<br />

later in the studio with a life model. <strong>The</strong> days will be structured around these different starting<br />

points, as well as exercises and challenges designed to keep us on our toes, awake and<br />

alert, to all the possibilities of drawing.<br />

Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomist Tutor: Marcus Cornish<br />

Week 1<br />

5 day course: Monday 2 - Friday 6 July<br />

Out of House / 10am-5pm<br />

A drawing and sculpting course centred on the summer exhibition at <strong>The</strong> Queen’s Gallery,<br />

Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomist. This course is a rare opportunity to see, study and work from<br />

some of the finest drawings ever created.<br />

We will look carefully at how Leonardo constructed his illusions on the page and how he<br />

used these drawings, following his three dimensional journey from the skeleton, through the<br />

layers of muscle and out to the skin. After studying and drawing from the collection, we will<br />

have use of a private studio in <strong>The</strong> Queen’s Gallery to work from a life model, making drawings<br />

that will lead to a final wax sculpture.<br />

This course is delivered in collaboration with <strong>The</strong> Royal Collection and includes a visit to the<br />

anatomical casts at the Royal Academy, and lectures from a leading surgeon and the Royal<br />

Collection’s curator, Martin Clayton. All entrance fees are included in the course fee.<br />

Heads and Hands: Painting the Half-Length Portrait Tutor: Ivy Smith Week 1<br />

5 day course: Monday 2 - Friday 6 July<br />

Studios 1 and 2 / 10am-5pm<br />

<strong>The</strong> head is the most particular and revealing indicator of individuality, but the hands come<br />

a close second. This course will focus on the half-length clothed portrait, exploring its rich<br />

potential for composition and colour relationships in paint. Students will have a choice of<br />

models and a final three day pose which will allow an in-depth response to the figure. Suitable<br />

for all levels.<br />

One Week One Pose: <strong>Drawing</strong> and Painting Tutor: Claudia Carr<br />

Week 2<br />

5 day course: Monday 9 - Friday 13 July<br />

Studio 2 /10am-5pm<br />

Students will work from the life model in one pose for the whole week, allowing for sustained<br />

perceptual concentration, with the freedom to experiment and revise. Through drawing,<br />

painting, colour demonstrations and discussion we will explore tone, colour, light, temperature,<br />

spatial relationships, composition and pictorial structure and rhythm. <strong>The</strong> course is<br />

designed for students of all levels.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Etching Week Tutor: Thomas Gosebruch<br />

Week 2<br />

5 day course: Monday 9 - Friday 13 July<br />

Printroom /10am-5pm<br />

Etching can be so much more than cross-hatched lines. We’ll explore other ways of drawing,<br />

painting on, and printing from, the metal plate. Etching is not just a means of reproducing<br />

drawings — it often takes off in its own surprising ways. This course is for those who have<br />

always appreciated etchings but have never made one before, as well as for experienced<br />

etchers.<br />

<strong>Drawing</strong> London’s Skyline<br />

Week 3<br />

Tutors: Sharon Beavan / Melissa Scott Miller / Martin Shortis<br />

5 day course: Monday 16 - Friday 20 July<br />

Out of House /10am-5pm<br />

This course is an opportunity for students to record and draw London’s skyline in its Olympic<br />

year, working with three tutors with three different approaches to city drawing. Students will<br />

visit sites from the South Bank to Parliament Hill and will also draw from indoor viewing<br />

platforms including views over the river from the Lighthouse at Trinity Buoy Wharf and the<br />

OXO Tower. This is a course for students interested in capturing the atmosphere and energy<br />

of the city, or for those wishing to explore the use of perspective in drawing.<br />

<strong>Drawing</strong> Stories: Comics and Graphic Novels<br />

Week 3<br />

Tutor: Emily Haworth-Booth<br />

5 day course: Monday 16 - Friday 20 July<br />

Studio 2 /10am-5pm<br />

This course is suitable for both beginners and those with more experience. It is an ideal<br />

introduction to ‘writing with pictures’, offering guidance on everything from choosing tools<br />

to generating ideas. We will also spend some time drawing from life, combining observation<br />

with imagination and memory. For those with projects already underway, this is a an opportunity<br />

to reconsider both style and process, receive feedback and experiment with technique.<br />

By the final day students will have drawn and inked their own graphic short story. Open to all<br />

levels and ages from 16 plus.<br />

Etching Masterclass: New Techniques Tutor: Lawrence Jenkins<br />

Week 4<br />

5 day course: Monday 23 - Friday 27 July<br />

Printroom /10am-5pm<br />

<strong>The</strong> printing facility in our basement workshop offers the chance to etch with individual<br />

guidance. Starting with making the plate, students are introduced to both traditional techniques<br />

as well as some new and unconventional methods. Students should bring drawings<br />

or reproductions of their work to the class. It is open to both beginners and those who would<br />

like to refresh their knowledge of etching.<br />

<strong>Drawing</strong> the Human Anatomy Tutor: George Donald<br />

Week 4<br />

5 day course: Monday 23 - Friday 27 July<br />

Studio 1 /10am-5pm<br />

<strong>The</strong> study of human anatomy is fundamental to drawing the figure. It helps us to understand<br />

and represent the structure of the human form, and to combine expressiveness with accuracy.<br />

This course will cover the muscular and skeletal system, with particular emphasis on<br />

the torso, limbs, eyes, hands and feet. Students will work from life models and the skeleton.<br />

Painting a Head Tutor: Susan Wilson<br />

5 day course: Monday 2 - Friday 6 July<br />

Studios 1 and 2 / 10am-5pm<br />

A painting class in which students will explore painting the portrait. Students will have the<br />

rare opportunity to paint from the same sitter for the duration of the week.<br />

“Velasquez imbued his sitters with a magical veracity, a quality of momentariness and a<br />

spiritual presence that Ortega Y Gasset described as “phantom-like”. By taking his subject and<br />

transforming it impressionistically into a mass of insubstantial brushstrokes which Quevedo<br />

termed “distant blobs” which from a distance became truth, not appearance, Velasquez achieved<br />

a configuration within the portrait where all that really mattered was the immediate reality of<br />

the person portrayed.” Alfonso E Perez Sanchez “Velasquez and the Baroque Portrait”<br />

In this intensive week of painting, students will aim to capture the personality of the model<br />

working from observation. Help will be given with mixing and use of paint and composition,<br />

but most of all the aim is to make the painted head have life. All levels of ability welcome.<br />

<strong>Summer</strong> Life Painting Tutor: Andy Pankhurst<br />

5 day course: Monday 9 - Friday 13 July<br />

“Painting is not the slavish copying of an object but the grasping of a harmony between several<br />

interactions…a powerful organising mind is the best aid to sensation in the realisation of a work<br />

of art.”<br />

Cézanne’s statement evokes the creative spirit and philosophy of the course. Working<br />

directly from a life model, a pose will be set for the duration of the week, giving students the<br />

opportunity for sustained perceptual concentration. All levels including beginners encouraged<br />

with individual one-to-one tuition.<br />

Fabric and Form: Painting the Kimono<br />

5 day course: Monday 16 - Friday 20 July<br />

Tutor: Peter Kuhfeld<br />

A life painting course exploring the relationship of the life model with the kimono. Students<br />

will consider how the human figure, with its curves and overall structure, interrelates with<br />

the design of the kimono, from the pattern printed on the fabric to its geometric form. <strong>The</strong><br />

emphasis will be on colour, design, composition and the fusion of the figure with this classic<br />

robe.<br />

Painting Materials Explained Tutor: Pip Seymour<br />

5 day course: Monday 23 - Friday 27 July<br />

Studio 1 / 10am-5pm<br />

An intense week of preparation of raw materials for painting, to include canvas stretching<br />

and priming; choosing oil colours and a practical workshop for hand-making oil colours and<br />

oil painting mediums. <strong>The</strong> hand-made materials will then be used to create a series of portrait<br />

studies from the model, working in the manner of 18th century portrait painters such as<br />

Romney and Reynolds.<br />

*Specialist materials will be provided for this course including canvases,<br />

paints and historic pigments and glaze mediums.<br />

Painting in the Park Tutor: Francis Hoyland<br />

5 day course: Monday 23 - Friday 27 July<br />

Students will draw the clothed model amongst the trees of Kensington Gardens, later transfiguring<br />

these drawings into paintings in the studio. Trees have grown into many poems and<br />

stories, remaining a continuous source of inspiration for painters and writers. For instance,<br />

Hopkins’ Binsey Poplars and Dante’s Wood of the Suicide. So find a short literary source<br />

that you like or have written yourself and bring it along. Anything can happen – just painting<br />

a tree from nature can be enough, or else something quite unexpected may germinate and<br />

grow – let’s see.<br />

1-3 week courses for 16-19 year olds:<br />

Monday 9 - Friday 27 July<br />

An intensive summer course for young artists aged 16-19, thinking about heading to art<br />

school. This is a unique opportunity to hone skills, build a portfolio, and experience art<br />

school first hand.<br />

<strong>The</strong> course will focus on drawing, painting and printing with an emphasis on developing<br />

students’ skills and abilities and preparing a portfolio for Foundation or Degree application.<br />

Individual guidance will be given on art school applications, personal statements and portfolio<br />

preparation, alongside discussion and group critiques. One-to-one tuition will be given by<br />

a wide variety of the school’s faculty, led by Gethin Evans and Sharon Beavan who have over<br />

30 years combined experience in Foundation level teaching at leading London art schools.<br />

<strong>The</strong> intention of the Foundation Masterclass course is for students to progress from one<br />

week to the next, however, students unable to commit to all weeks will be able to book on to<br />

either Week 1, Week 2 or Week 3.<br />

London Now! A Sketchbook Journey<br />

This week students will engage with the city in its Olympic year, recording the experience<br />

of London life today. Students will draw and print at various Olympic sites including Anish<br />

Kapoor’s Orbit as well as London’s river and Docklands, and at inner city farms. <strong>The</strong> week<br />

will also include some time in the studio drawing from the life model and working up sketchbook<br />

studies into finished pieces. <strong>The</strong> week will culminate in individual advice sessions on<br />

art school applications, including portfolio preparation and personal statements.<br />

students will look at storytelling, learning how to create a comic from an initial idea to an<br />

inked page. <strong>The</strong> week will culminate in individual advice sessions on art school applications,<br />

including portfolio preparation and personal statements.<br />
