CHADWYCK-HEALEY
Here industry is not in vain,
For we have bounteous crops of grain,
And you behold on every field,
Of grass and roots abundant yield.
But after all the greatest charm
Is the snug home upon the farm,
And the stone walls now keep cattle warm.
Canadian Poetry charts the formation of Canadian poetry over a
period of some 400 years, opening with the writings of colonists
and reluctant exiles and ending in the early 20 th century. It offers
of writing, much of which is not widely available in print.
Canadian Poetry has been produced in
collaboration with the University of New
Brunswick (UNB) and reflects the strengths
of UNB’s unique holdings of Englishlanguage
published in book form are included,
taking reliable modern critical editions
where available. For poems up to 1850,
Sophisticated Searching
Options A variety of searching
capabilities allows researchers to find
information quickly and easily. Canadian
Poetry is searchable by:
• Keyword in the title or text
• First line of title keyword
• Poet
• Period
• Gender
• Dates of birth and death
Cross-searching the database allows
researchers to study and compare
different writings and time periods in
Canadian poetry history. For example, a
searcher can trace the changing
preoccupation with the Canadian
landscape over the centuries, or the move
away from British literary models to the
development of recognizably Canadian
poetic forms and styles.
Users can also browse the complete list of
texts arranged alphabetically by author
and volume, and then select any author or
volume for display. In addition, researchers
can browse lists of all authors, titles, and
first lines in the collection, as well as a
complete index of all the words in the
texts, titles, and first lines. Truncation
searching can be used to retrieve
documents containing variants on a term.
Searches can also be customized using
Boolean and proximity operators.
