Renewables-to-Hydrogen
Distributed Energy Systems’ HOGEN ® RE hydrogen generators are the ideal tool
for applications using renewable energy inputs that need a reliable, efficient,
flexible hydrogen production technology.
Increasing interests in renewable energy to solve energy deficit and carbon emission problems has brought the
hydrogen horizon to the forefront. Many now look at hydrogen as the next significant fuel in the energy market.
Distributed Energy Systems has developed the HOGEN RE hydrogen generator to meet the growing demand for
electrolyzers in hydrogen-based renewable energy storage systems.
Versatile and Dependable Power Independence
The HOGEN RE hydrogen generation system incorporates a proven
hydrogen generation platform, a sophisticated DC to DC power converter
and a flexible software operating system that allows for several modes
of operation.
Distributed Energy Systems provides a power conversion and control
solution that reduces the development time typically required for
integration with a renewable energy source. The ability to run the
electrolyzer on multiple power sources allows the end user flexibility in
choosing the size of their renewable energy source. For example, running
the HOGEN RE hydrogen generator in the Balance Power Mode provides
for a maximum utilization of the renewable power input first, with the
balance of capacity provided from a grid source.
Solar cell efficiency has increased
almost 200% since the 1950’s
making solar energy an increasingly
viable alternative for the world’s
power needs.
Broad Applications
Flexibility to Generate Everywhere
Distributed Energy Systems’ renewable-based hydrogen generation
systems have a broad base of application opportunities. Some possible
renewable sources of energy that can be coupled with HOGEN RE
hydrogen generators are:
• Wind
• Solar
• Hydro
• Wave
Depending on the renewable source and the power required, the HOGEN
RE hydrogen generator has no geographic or geopolitical limitations.
From major utilities to residential users, across the spectrum of fueling
applications to power quality applications, the HOGEN RE hydrogen
generator can be used as a model to solve the world’s energy needs.
Case Study
The Solar-Hydrogen Home
The US Merchant Marine Academy and the New York Institute of
Technology joined forces to build a home for the 2005 Department of
Energy Solar Decathlon Competition. The home, which incorporated a
Distributed Energy Systems’ HOGEN RE hydrogen generator, was in a class
of its own. In a typical “off-grid” scenario, a large battery bank is required
to store energy. In the “solar-hydrogen” home, solar energy is stored in the
form of hydrogen gas generated from the HOGEN RE hydrogen generator.
When it is dark, instead of drawing energy from a battery bank, hydrogen
gas is converted into electricity through a fuel cell. During the day when
there is plenty of energy from the sun, water is converted into hydrogen
gas through the use of a HOGEN RE hydrogen generator.
