Properties
TEGO ® Sun Z 800 is a unique microfine hydrophobic
coated Zinc Oxide with broad spectrum UV
absorption. The product is based on the uncoated
TEGO ® Sun Z 500 and offers additional benefits to
the formulator, due to its strongly hydrophobic
coating. The appearance of sun screen products
containing TEGO ® Sun Z 800 shows no whitening and
is transparent on skin after rub-in.
TEGO ® Sun Z 800 can be easily dispersed into any
common cosmetic oil by using high shear dispersing
tools. The additional use of isostearic acid has shown
an enhanced particle distribution. The small particle
size allows the formulator to use up to 15 % TEGO ®
Sun Z 800 with a transparent appearance and a
pleasant skin feel.
The coating has a strong adhesion to the pigment
and therefore it can't be washed away or evaporate.
It covers the ZnO particles and makes them
compatible with coated Titanium Dioxide.
The strong hydrophobic character of TEGO ® Sun Z
800 keeps it stable within the oil phase and
therefore has no significant influence on the pH
value of the emulsion.
TEGO ® Sun Z 800 provides a superior broad
spectrum protection up to a wavelength of 380 nm.
The absorption curve is identical with that of the
uncoated ZnO (Fig. 1).
Combinations with highly effective organic UV
absorbers and Titanium Dioxide have shown
powerful synergistic effects (e.g. with TiO2,
Ethylhexyl Triazone, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate,
Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Bis-
Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenol Triazine,
Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone, Octocrylene).
By utilising TEGO ® Sun Z 800, lower amounts of
organic filters can be used to achieve the same SPF.
Consumers' exposure to organic sun screen filters
can be minimized.
Hence, TEGO ® Sun Z 800 offers an excellent way to
provide good broad spectrum protection together
with an aesthetically superior appearance.
TEGO ® Sun Z 800 is characterized by its high purity
and an extremely low content of heavy metals.
Application
• Daily wear lotions and creams
• O/W and W/O sunscreens
• Sun protection for kids
Processing hints
W/O Emulsions
W/O formulations are produced according to
common practice.
To achieve the best SPF response and highest
transparency, it is recommended to disperse TEGO ®
Sun Z 800 directly into the oil phase of the emulsion
applying high sheer aggregates. Long term stable
emulsions with a better distribution of particles can
be obtained by adding small amounts (0.3 - 1.0%) of
fatty acids e.g. isostearic acid as a dispersing aid.
O/W Emulsions
TEGO ® Sun Z 800 has to be dispersed into the oil
phase of O/W emulsions. Due to the extremely
hydrophobic character, TEGO ® Sun Z 800 has no
tendency to penetrate into the water phase and thus
does not contribute significantly to the pH value of
the emulsion.
The additional use of isostearic acid is not necessary,
but small amounts have shown reduced agglomerate
particle sizes as well.
To obtain long term stable emulsions, the use of
consistency enhancers, e.g. GMS/fatty alcohols,
acrylamide gels, or xanthan gum and carbomers is
recommended.
Approval
With the 26th amendment to the European Cosmetics
Regulation Zinc Oxide is not finally approved as UV
filter in appendix VII. The use permission is
extended temporarily from year to year, until a final
decision of the SCCNFP (Scientific committee for
cosmetics and non-food products) is reached.
In the United States the OTC Sunscreen monograph
allows the use of up to 25% Zinc Oxide.
Hazardous goods classification
Information concerning
• classification and labelling according to
regulations for transport and for dangerous
substances
• protective measures for storage and handling
• measures in accidents and fires
• toxicity and ecological effects
is given in our material safety data sheets.
