Shibley Telhami is a Nonresident<br />

Senior Fel low at <strong>the</strong> Saban Center<br />

for Middle East Policy at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Brookings</strong> Institution and <strong>the</strong> Anwar<br />

Sadat Professor for Peace and<br />

Devel opment at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Maryland. He is <strong>the</strong> author of The Stakes: America<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Middle East (2002) and Power and Leadership<br />

in International Bargaining: The Path to <strong>the</strong> Camp David<br />

Accords (1990), and coauthor of Liberty and Power:<br />

A Dialogue on Religion and U.S. Foreign Policy in an<br />

Unjust <strong>World</strong> (2004). He was an advisor to <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

Mission to <strong>the</strong> United Nations and to Congressman<br />

Lee H. Hamilton (D-Indiana). Telhami received a B.A.<br />

from Queens College of <strong>the</strong> City University of New<br />

York, an M.A. from <strong>the</strong> Graduate Theological Union,<br />

Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from <strong>the</strong> University of California,<br />

Berkeley.<br />

Theophilos<br />

Jerusalem<br />

His Beatitude Theophilos III of<br />

Jerusalem is <strong>the</strong> current Patriarch<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Greek Orthodox Church in<br />

Jerusalem. Theophilos was elected<br />

<strong>the</strong> 141st Primate of <strong>the</strong> Orthodox<br />

Church of Jerusalem on August<br />

22, 2005. In 1964, he served as Archdeacon for<br />

<strong>the</strong>n-Patriarch Benediktos (Benedict I). From 1991 to<br />

1996, he was Priest in Cana in Galilee, which had a<br />

predominantly Israeli Arab flock, <strong>the</strong>re he also formed<br />

a society called “Nour al Masih” (“Light of Christ”),<br />

which spreads <strong>the</strong> Orthodox Christian faith throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> region. Before becoming Patriarch, Theophilos<br />

served for a short time as <strong>the</strong> Archbishop of Tabor, having<br />

been consecrated to <strong>the</strong> episcopacy by Irenaios in<br />

February of 2005. His Beatitude studied <strong>the</strong>ology at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University of A<strong>the</strong>ns and went on to complete a<br />

master’s degree in London.<br />

Vaughan Turekian<br />

United States<br />

Dr. Vaughan Turekian is Chief<br />

International Officer for <strong>the</strong><br />

American Association for <strong>the</strong> Advancement<br />

of Science (AAAS). In<br />

this role, he leads, develops and<br />

coordinates <strong>the</strong> broad range of<br />

AAAS’s international activities. Prior to this position,<br />

Dr. Turekian served as Special Assistant to <strong>the</strong> Under<br />

Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs,<br />

where he was lead advisor on international science,<br />

technology, environment and health issues, including,<br />

clean energy, sustainable development, climate change,<br />

scientific outreach and avian influenza. He is <strong>the</strong> twotime<br />

recipient of <strong>the</strong> Department’s Superior Honor<br />

Award for his work on climate change and avian influenza.<br />

Prior to his time at <strong>the</strong> State Department, Dr.<br />

Turekian worked at <strong>the</strong> National Academy of Sciences<br />

(NAS). In 2001, he was <strong>the</strong> Study Director for <strong>the</strong><br />

White House-requested NAS report on climate change<br />

science. He has published numerous articles on <strong>the</strong><br />

linkages between science and international policy. Dr.<br />

Turekian received his master’s and Ph.D. in atmospheric<br />

geochemistry from <strong>the</strong> University of Virginia, where<br />

he focused on applying stable isotopic tracers to characterize<br />

aerosol sources and chemistry in <strong>the</strong> marine<br />

boundary layer, and was awarded <strong>the</strong> Maury Prize as<br />

Outstanding Student in Environmental Sciences. He<br />

is a graduate of Yale University with degrees in geology<br />

and geophysics and international studies.<br />

Bridget Welsh<br />

Singapore<br />

Bridget Welsh is an Associate<br />

Professor in Political Science at<br />

Singapore Management University<br />

where she teaches courses on<br />

contemporary Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Asia,<br />

comparative politics, gender and<br />

international development. She has edited Reflections:<br />

The Mahathir Years (2004), Legacy of Engagement in<br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Asia (2008), Impressions of <strong>the</strong> Goh Chok Tong<br />

Years in Singapore (2009), Democracy Takeoff?: Reflections<br />

on <strong>the</strong> BJ Habibie Period (<strong>2010</strong> forthcoming) and<br />

Transition or Transformation: Abdullah Badawi’s Tenure<br />

(<strong>2010</strong> forthcoming). In 2004 she was a Henry R.<br />

Luce Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Asian Fellow at <strong>the</strong> Australian National<br />

University. Welsh is <strong>the</strong> former Chair of <strong>the</strong> Malaysia,<br />

Singapore, Brunei Studies Group and a consultant<br />

to Freedom House. She received her doctorate from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department of Political Science at Columbia University,<br />

her M.A. from Columbia University, language<br />

training (FALCON) from Cornell University and BA<br />

from Colgate University.<br />
