Ahmed Zewail<br />

Ahmed Zewail is <strong>the</strong> Linus Pauling<br />
Chair professor of chemistry<br />
and professor of physics at <strong>the</strong><br />
California Institute of Technology<br />
(Caltech). For ten years, he was <strong>the</strong><br />
Director of <strong>the</strong> National Science<br />
Foundation’s Laboratory for Molecular Sciences (LMS),<br />
and is currently <strong>the</strong> Director of <strong>the</strong> Center for Physical<br />
Biology at Caltech. He received his early education in<br />
Egypt, and in <strong>the</strong> U.S. completed a Ph. D., from <strong>the</strong><br />
University of Pennsylvania, and a postdoctoral (IBM)<br />
fellowship at <strong>the</strong> University of California, Berkeley,<br />
before joining <strong>the</strong> faculty at Caltech. Dr. Zewail was<br />
awarded <strong>the</strong> 1999 Nobel Prize for his pioneering developments<br />
in femtoscience, making possible observation<br />
of phenomena in a millionth of a billionth of a second,<br />
<strong>the</strong> scale of atomic motion. On April 27, 2009, President<br />
Barack Obama appointed him to <strong>the</strong> President’s<br />
Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and<br />
in November of <strong>the</strong> same year, he was named <strong>the</strong> first<br />
United States Science Envoy to <strong>the</strong> Middle East. He<br />
is an elected member of academies and learned societies,<br />
including <strong>the</strong> American Philosophical Society, National<br />
Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of London,<br />
French Academy, Russian Academy, Chinese Academy,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> Swedish Academy, and serves on national and<br />
international boards for academic, cultural, and world<br />
affairs.<br />
Gates Foundation. His research has focused on <strong>the</strong> development<br />
of quantitative imaging methods based on<br />
CAT and MRI scanning to diagnose and treat cancer,<br />
pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. He has 212<br />
publications and holds eight patents. Dr. Zerhouni is a<br />
member of <strong>the</strong> Board of Trustees of <strong>the</strong> King Abdullah<br />
University of Science and Technology, opened in September<br />
2009 in Saudi Arabia and of Khalifa University<br />
in UAE.<br />
Moneef R. Zou’bi<br />
Jordan<br />
Moneef Rafe’ Zou’bi has been<br />
<strong>the</strong> director general of <strong>the</strong> Islamic<br />
<strong>World</strong> Academy of Sciences in<br />
Jordan since 1998. He has been<br />
involved in scientific missions in<br />
more than 50 countries and has<br />
devoted all his energy to turning <strong>the</strong> IAS into an international<br />
academy of sciences that is engaged in bridging<br />
scientific and technological, development, and<br />
even political divides between countries, cultures and<br />
civilizations. He has written extensively on science and<br />
technology topics, and has given lectures on such subjects<br />
around <strong>the</strong> world. Zou’bi has also published over<br />
40 papers, and edited and co-edited 10 books on topics<br />
such as higher education, <strong>the</strong> environment, water<br />
resources and transformational technologies. Prior to<br />
his career at IAS, Zou’bi served in <strong>the</strong> Royal Corps of<br />
Engineers in <strong>the</strong> Jordanian Armed Forces.<br />
Elias Zerhouni<br />
United States<br />
Dr. Zerhouni received his medical<br />
degree at <strong>the</strong> University of Algiers<br />
School of Medicine before coming<br />
to America. He completed his residency<br />
at <strong>the</strong> John Hopkins School<br />
of Medicine, where he later served<br />
as a professor and Chairman of <strong>the</strong> Radiology Department.<br />
Dr. Zerhouni has served as a consultant to <strong>the</strong><br />
White House and to <strong>the</strong> WHO. In 2002, Dr. Zerhouni<br />
was appointed as <strong>the</strong> 15th Director of <strong>the</strong> National<br />
Institute of Health. Under his leadership, <strong>the</strong> NIH<br />
initiated <strong>the</strong> NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, established<br />
an NIH-wide research initiative to address<br />
<strong>the</strong> obesity epidemic, and made health disparities a<br />
research priority. He rejoined <strong>the</strong> faculty of John Hopkins<br />
University in 2008, and became a Senior Fellow<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Global Health program at <strong>the</strong> Bill and Melinda<br />
