H H H H H H H S M M M • DRAGON LAKE NEWS By JOYCE SWANKY DRAGON LAKE — The annual meeting of the Cariboo Farmer's Institute was held on Friday evening in the Institute Hall. Officers for the incoming year are President A. K. Richardson, Vice-president Ed Zschiedrich, Sec. Treasurer Don Symington and directors Peter Josephy, John Annett and Bob Mufford, The water problem at the hall was discussed at length and a joint meeting with the ladies will be held soon when a new proposal to the problem will be presented. The group approved several recommendations- to be sent to the government with regard to Government land-clearing regulations. * * * Although it was 55 years ago on March 20 that TomTrueman first arrived intheDragonLake District, this is the first year he has ever picked fresh mushrooms on that day. * * * Mrs. Bill Irwin is expected home this week from Prince i George where she has been visiting her mother Mrs. Crotteau. * * * A very successful 'open house' followed by a parentteacher group meeting was held in Lakeview School on March 20. Plans are being made to raise money to purchase special gynf equipment for the °new activity room. * * * The house on Symington Road owned by Ernie Martens which was originally built and owned by Tom Nevin, burnt to the ground late Sunday afternoon. It had been vacant for several months so the cause of the fire is a mystery. Neighbours managed to save a storage shed near the house by throwing v/ater on it. * * * DRAGON LAKE—The Dragon Lake PTA met on March 26 at the school and after a short meeting everyone travelled to the School District 28 Resource Center in Quesnel where they were met by Mr. and Mrs. L. Kelsey who gave them a guided tour of the building. Everyone was very impressed and heartily recommended that other PTA's or interested groups plan a similiar event. Before leaving home everyone enjoyed a cup of coffee with the Kelsey's who operate the Centre for School District 28. * * * Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Preston (nee Darlene Wheeler) both of this district, on their marriage in Quesnel on March 30. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Bev. Wheeler from the Peace River, formerly of Dragon Lake, are visiting their son and family the Lloyd Wheelers, and attended the marriage and reception on March 30 of their granddaughter Darlene. * * * Mrs. Nettie Sornburger from Ontario and Mrs. Liz Marmes from W infield, Saskatchewan, sisters-in-law of Mrs. Mary Wall, have returned to their homes after a very pleasant visit especially as they had not seen each other for 48 years. * * * Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Elsie Heppner who was unable to be present at the funeral of her father, who passed away recently at Brandon, Manitoba. * * * The Dragon Lake Women's Institute was well represented at the Cariboo District Institute Rally held in Williams Lake on March 23. Those making the trip were Mrs. Vi Hultkrans, Mrs. Leonore Trueman, Mrs. Jean Daniells, Mrs. E. Tourigny, Mrs. J. Swanky; and Mrs. D. Symington. OAPO Meet At the April meeting'of the O.A.P.O. in the United Church hall on Tuesday Alderman Ceal Tingley addressed members on the subject of an intensive care hospital which it is hoped will be established, in Quesnel. The question of sending a petition to the Cariboo's provincial representative, Bob Bonner, was discussed and approved. The Sing Song which was to have been held at Fraser Village is now planned for the United Church hall, (upstairs) on April 9. This will include songs by a ladies glee club, a male quartette, and community singing. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Birthdays J. Williams, left, and Amos Carson, right, celebrated birthdays during April and pose with their birthday cake during the regular social O. A. P. gathering held on the.first Tuesday in the month. There was on other gentleman who was born in April too, but he was camera shy. "I've never had my picture taken and I never will" he stoutly maintained. --Observer Photo (Continued from psige' four) when lifted from their normal nursery environment. Another advantage is that the bullet desing lends itself to mechanization of planting and makes' possible the development of a planting machine which could do the work of a number of planters who are not always readily available when required. This could be of much importance in view of the tight schedule of British Columbia's reforestation program which has as its objective the production of 75 million seedlings a year by 1975. In addition to the factors of increased' planting speed and still-to-be-determined surviv- . al rates, there is the all-important cost factor. Certain aspects of the system now on trial are more expensive, but there are other considerations such as thereduction of nursery cost, the more universal choice of growing areas over the limited choice of the present nursery system and the difficulty of locating suitable sites. The break-even point could come with the survival rate alone. If this point is reached, many other factors favour the bullet-planting method on selected reforestation sites, and it is hoped the next few years .will provide the answer. The Corporation of the Town of Quesnel. Mother Shipton's Prophecies Have you ever heard of Mother Shipton's Prophecies? While I was visiting in Saskatchewan my mother dug up the poem which Mother Shipton wrote, believe it or not, in the year 1559! Perhaps you will find the predictions of this ancient lady as fascinating as I did, and will marvel at how many of them have come to pass 400 years later. . . MOTHER SHIPTON'S AMAZING PROPHECIES A house of glass shall come to pass In merry England, but, alas, War will follow with the work In the land of the Turk, And state and state in fierce strife Struggle for each other's life. Carriages without horses shall go, And accidents fill the world with woe. In London Primrose Hill shall be And the centre of a Bishop's see. Around the world thoughts shall fly In the twinkling of an eye. Through the hills men shall ride • And neither horse nor ass bestride. |f Under water men shall walk, Shall ride, shall sleep, shall talk. Iron in the water shall float As easily as a wooden boat. God shall be found and shown In a land that's now unknown. Fire and water shall wonders do, And England shall admit a Jew. Three time three shall lovely France Be led to dance a bloody dance, Before her people shall be free Three tyrant rulers shall she see, Each springing from a different dynasty, And now a word in uncouth rhyme Of what shall be in later time. In those far-off wonderful days Women shall get a strange odd craze To dress like men and breeches wear, And cut off their beautiful locks of hair, And ride astride with brazen brow As witches do on broomsticks now. Their love shall die and marriage cease • And babes and sucklings so decrease Their wives shall fondle cats and dogs. In eightee - hundred and ninety-six Build your houses of rotten sticks, For then shall mighty wars be planned And fire and sword sweep over the land. And those who live the century through In fear and trembling this will do; Fly to the mountains and the glens, To bogs and forests and wild dens, For tempests will rage and oceans will roar And Gabriel stand on sea and shore, And as he toots his wondrous horn Old worlds shall die and new be born. In the air men shall be seen In black, in white, and in green. How strange, but yet they shall be true. The world upside down shall be. And gold be found at the root of a tree. The world to an end shall come In nineteen-hundred and eighty-one.
