During the summer and fall of 2010, passive infrared counters were placed at two locations along the Paulinskill
Valley Trail. The first counter was placed on the trail at the Spring Valley Road trailhead on June 1. This
counter was moved on August 10 because the trailhead was closed for construction. The counter was placed
on the trail at the Warbasse Junction Road trailhead on August 10, where it remained until November 4.
These counters collect data on the number of trail users passing the counter by detecting each user’s “heat
signature.”
In order to develop an annual user estimate for these two locations, the data collected was extrapolated to a
12-month estimate using a User Visit Model developed by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. This model examines
data collected using electronic counters at 58 different locations on rail-trails across the United States.
