Of all operas, perhaps the one that least needs
ingenious extramusical assistance is »Tristan«,
this aurally erotic work that speaks so vividly to the
listener’s inner eye. Wagner’s score is simply more
illustrative and sensuously pictorial than any series
of stage pictures could be. Golo Berg’s sensuous
conducting of the Dessau Philharmonic continually
presses that truth home. He leads the orchestra in a
lithe and propulsive performance that shows unusual
consideration for the wonderful voices of the singers.
»The cheering was loud and prolonged … This Dessau
Tristan is a musical gem and makes for a superb
evening.« (MDR)
Nikolaus Lehnoff’s »Tannhäuser« production, recorded
at Baden-Baden, is based on Wagner’s Paris
version with an extended Venusberg and a ballet very
surprisingly choreographed. The minimalist staging
and Raimund Bauer’s ingenious sets make this
»Tannhäuser« an opera for our time. The cast including
Camilla Nylund, Waltraud Meier, Robert Gambill
Stephen Milling and Roman Trekel is hard to match
these days. Press quotes: »Baden-Baden successfully
attacks Bayreuth with Tannhäuser … A noble feast of
voices … There is no crisis of Wagner singers!« (FAZ);
»The DSO Berlin outdid itself under Philippe Jordan …
Camilla Nylund excelled as the chaste Elisabeth, and
Waltraud Meier, a musician with deep reserves of force
and a gift for madness, was the perfect Venus.«
Jules Massenet (1842 – 1912) turned Goethe’s famous
tale of the tragic love of Werther and Charlotte into one
of the most richly melodic and moving of all French
operas. It was first performed at Vienna’s Hofoper on
16 February 1892. The music of Werther is full of sublime
characterisation, its beguiling melodies revealing
profound insights into the complex states of mind of
the protagonists. Without ignoring his debt to Richard
Wagner, Massenet’s score follows firmly in the tradition
of Georges Bizet. It is generally regarded as the
composer’s masterpiece.
