Family: Dolichopodidae<br />
Characteristics: These are small (1/8 <strong>in</strong>ch),<br />
slender flies with long, stilt-like legs. They are<br />
metallic blue, red or green and are often seen<br />
rest<strong>in</strong>g on leaves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sunlight. They move<br />
rapidly on and among leaves, runn<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
fly<strong>in</strong>g quickly. The w<strong>in</strong>gs are typically held<br />
out from <strong>the</strong> body at about a 45 degree angle.<br />
Prey: Adult flies and larvae feed on small<br />
<strong>in</strong>sects. Long-legged flies are not known to be<br />
an important predator of any cotton pest but<br />
are often noted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field.<br />
General Biology: Very little is known about<br />
this <strong>in</strong>sect family. Adults are predaceous on<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r small <strong>in</strong>sects, and <strong>the</strong> larvae are also<br />
assumed to be predaceous, although this is<br />
not known for most species. The adult flies<br />
can be very abundant, particularly from midseason<br />
to harvest.<br />
