Israel is a wonderland, a place to dream and a place where dreams soar.

As the plane descends, my spirits rise with excitement as the El Al 777 crosses over the shores of Tel Aviv. To see the sands down 

below fills me with such excitement, joy and anticipation. 

This is how I felt as I started my recent trip to Israel. I returned home renewed with a new understanding that as I change so does 

Israel. To see Israel from the perspective of being a congregational rabbi, one that is excited to be a leader of our upcoming Temple trip, 

was to know that Israel offers such great gifts to all who walk on her shores. To see Israel as a modern land at a time of calm was exciting. 

It is thrilling to be able to know that we can walk in the place where Abraham pitched his tent and Jacob saw a ladder. We can walk in the 

place where the great Rabbis of the Talmud taught Torah and where the Kabbalists experienced God. Israel is a wonderland, a place to 

dream and a place where dreams soar. It is the place that our great grandparents dreamed about when they thought of a Jewish home. 

For all these reasons and more, we celebrate Israel as our homeland. 

As we all have experienced, this year is the year of Am Yisrael Chai at Temple Isaiah. In February, we will have our first-ever Israelplex 

Weekend during which we will celebrate Israel through learning, food and art. Join us for 

a wide range of events beginning Friday evening, February 11, with guest speaker David 

Mendelsson who will teach about Zion(ism), from the perspective of our own people’s February AT ISAIAH 

“national park.” Also, join us Sunday afternoon as we celebrate Israel in a variety of ways 

highlighted by a lecture from our friend and scholar, Paul Liptz, who will speak to us about 

building our personal relationships with Israel. Join us for any/all of the weekend events as Welcome New members 6 

we celebrate and have our own spirits filled. Am Yisrael Chai!

to Israel. 

It is no secret that I am in love with 

Israel. Like any love story, it begins with 

a “crush” or an unrealistic infatuation. 

Over time, like other relationships, 

my personal relationship with Israel 

has matured. I have moved from that 

adolescent high school fantasy romance 

to the middle-aged stage of “let us spend 

the rest of our lives together, and I accept 

you for all you are even if you leave your 

socks on the bedroom floor and you do not tell me when there are only two 

ounces of orange juice left in the container in the fridge.” My relationship 

with Israel is like that, and I have come to understand that Israel is by no 

means the perfect spouse. 

When I began my relationship with Israel, I did not realize the depth of 

the problems with the neighbors (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt) or the 

harsh disagreements between family members (Orthodox, Reform, Secular 

and all those members of the “mishpocheh” somewhere in between). I was 

initially attracted to Israel’s good looks (great beaches, amazing archaeology, 

numerous religious sites, military prowess) and was not aware of Israel’s 

hidden beauties (bustling high-tech, advances in medicine, incredible 

cultural life, national parks, amazing architecture). But over time, sitting 

with a plate of hummus with freshly baked pita or a cup of coffee scented 

with cardamom, I have heard Israel’s subtle stories and the personal tales. 

Like in any relationship, a couple of decades have given me perspective on 

why this lover of mine behaves in certain ways. I do not always agree with 

Israel’s actions, but, by reading and talking and talking a little more and 

drinking a little more coffee and scooping up a little more hummus, I have 

been afforded insight even if I do shake my head often in disbelief. 

Join me in 2012 as the Temple Isaiah community journeys to Israel. Fall in 

love. Meet the neighbors. Say hello to the family. And be prepared to be 

swept off your feet – because when Israel embraces you, I can practically 

guarantee it will be a love affair for life.

I am a Jew by choice. There are those to whom it would seem that being born Jewish is easier than choosing to 

become Jewish. But I would argue that being born Jewish and choosing to stay engaged despite sometimes feeling 

disconnected, indifferent or even cut off, is far more challenging. Some of us choose to BE Jewish, but we have to 

DO Jewish to stay connected. Doing Jewish requires showing up and opting in. One of the best ways to deepen, 

strengthen or even jumpstart one’s connection to Judaism is to go to Israel. 

I first went to Israel on a synagogue tour. One of the many locations listed on our itinerary was a short visit to 

the steps at the southern edge of the Western Wall. When the ancient Israelites journeyed to the Temple for the 

major festivals, they climbed these 15 steps before entering the courtyard of the Temple. The stairs were purposely 

and ingeniously constructed in a way that would assure a slow and respectful ascent to the Holy Temple, and it 

is believed that the Levites, beginning in a low tone of voice and steadily ascending to a higher tone, would stand 

on these steps majestically singing 15 Psalms which begin with the words Shir hamalot (a song of ascents). Psalm 

126, customarily recited on Shabbat before the blessing after the meal, is one of these 15 Psalms. Being more 

than familiar with Psalm 126, I started singing it while simultaneously slowly climbing the stairs until I reached 

the top. This, for me, was a spiritual experience. I felt it deeply. It was a moment of true connection. It was this 

impromptu magical moment that inspired me to continue my studies and become a Cantor, and it could only 

have happened in Israel. 

Temple Isaiah is offering a congregation-wide trip to Israel in 2012. I cannot think of a better gift to give to yourself and your family. Opt in!

Long before the rebirth of Israel, a Jew leaving 

Germany turned to Los Angeles. The familiar history 

of missions, ranchos, padres, Indians and soldiers 

excludes the pivotal Jewish banker. Savvy, immigrant, 

German-Jew Isaias Hellman transformed a backwater 

outpost into our modern home. His meteoric rise 

shines in a comprehensive biography by his greatgreat-granddaughter. 

We follow Hellman from a dusty, anti-Semitic 

German hamlet to 1859 Los Angeles. A major player 

developing eight industries, banking, transportation, 

oil, water, wine, land development, electricity and 

education, his jaw-dropping career also involved 

the creation of San Francisco. Sipping our favorite 

California red, talking of Wells Fargo Bank, USC, UC 

Regents, railroads, oil stocks, municipally controlled 

light and water, the LA Times or Wilshire Boulevard 

Temple, we talk of Hellman. His Towers of Gold were 

literal: a successful ploy to face bank panics. 

Hellman’s decisions brought him into conflict 

with friend and foe. He argued with his brother, 

competitors, colleagues, employees (one left to create 

his own idea: Bank of America). The Lehmann 

Brothers, his in-laws, invested with him. The 

German-Jewish network in California emulated 

New York, influencing social snobbery, business 

connections, neighborhoods and charity donations. 

Hellman was so wealthy his will was in probate for 

35 years. 

No “life” exists in a vacuum. Hellman’s outstanding 

contributions confronted California’s progressive 

politics (no surprise, Hellman did not like reformers) 

and nascent international Zionism (he didn’t like 

this either). Names on local buildings, cities and 

street signs come alive: people with whom Hellman 

negotiated. Details and photographs in this 

straightforward book provide a stunning Jewish role

Green Team 

Have you noticed this graphic on 

the large-screen Temple monitors? 

If you have not, take a look the next time you enter, and let its message sink 

in. Why is it important? Several Isaians ago, we talked about this in general, 

but perhaps some startling statistics will help better frame the issue. 

• In 1976, we drank 1.6 gallons of bottled water per person. In 2006, we 

drank 28.3 gallons. That is 18 times more! For what real purpose? 

• Every hour, we throw away 2.5 million of these bottles. 

• Imagine each bottle already filled 25% with oil—that is about what it takes to produce it. 

• 1000 to 2000 times more energy is needed to produce bottled water than tap water. 

• If the number of water bottles ending up in the US landfills each year were laid end to end, they would encircle the 

globe 114 times. 

• 450 years to eternity is the range for the decomposition of plastic water bottles in landfills. 

In light of this, the Board of Temple Isaiah voted unanimously to support the Green Team’s goal of having our Temple 

premises be a single-use disposable water bottle free zone. We hope you will join in and help us reach this goal. Just keep a 

good, reusable water bottle in the car, and bring it in with you. We know sometimes it is hard to remember, but get into the 

habit, and it will happen naturally.

Are you interested in going to Jewish summer camp? Temple Isaiah has a special opportunity for you. With much appreciation to Andrea 

Spatz and Bob Wunderlich, we are excited to be able to offer the annual Jerome and Freyda Spatz Camp Scholarship. 

Each year, this scholarship provides one Temple Isaiah Religious School student in grades 2 - 7 with a campership to one of three Southern 

California Jewish overnight camps. If you are interested in attending Camp JCA Shalom in Malibu, either of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple 

Camps (Camp Hess Kramer or Gindling Hilltop Camp) in Malibu or Camp Alonim in Simi Valley, then this scholarship may be for you. 

One deserving student will be chosen by the rabbis and the Religious School staff to receive a camp scholarship toward a week at summer 

camp. Special priority will be given to first-time campers and those children who merit financial assistance. If you are interested in

Introducing the legacy circle 

FROM James Berliner, Chair of the Endowment 

Over sixty years ago, the founding families of Temple Isaiah created an 

extraordinary and enduring community. For all of the decades since, 

the Temple has been our home for worship, education, life cycle events, 

community service, social interaction and so much more. Temple Isaiah 

has inspired, nourished, served and enriched us. 

As current members, we are mindful of the wonderful work of all those who 

came before us. We owe them a tremendous debt for creating the Temple 

that has been so important in our lives. We also share their determination 

to make Temple Isaiah strong for the generations to follow. 

One of the best ways to honor the past and secure a strong future is by 

making a legacy gift to Temple Isaiah. This can be done by making a pledge 

at this time to make a financial commitment to the Temple in the future, 

either through a bequest in a will or trust or by designating the Temple as a 

partial or full beneficiary of a retirement account or life insurance product. 

As pledges to make a future gift, they involve no cost today, but they will 

make a huge difference to the Temple in the future.

recognize and thank all of our 

members who have made legacy 

gifts. We will have special events 

and opportunities to bring 

together like-minded members 

who share this commitment to
