MARCH 2012
THE
FROM RABBI KLEIN
TEMPLE ISAIAH
HIRES NEW
STAFF!
I am very pleased to share with the Isaiah
community that our various search
committees, after much hard work, late nights
and jerrycans of coffee, have completed their proposals to the Board
of Trustees for the nominees for a number of top positions in our
esteemed organization. 2012 is going to be very exciting in our
community!
Meet our New Executive Director
Ron Paul was a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon during the
60’s, so we know that diagnosing the sanctuary sound
system in the midst of Kol Nidre will not ruffle him at all.
We are confident that he will deftly be able to renovate
our website, turning Isaiah into an Internet sensation.
Ron has extensive experience with grassroots organizing
and promises to be instrumental in our work with One-
LA. Along with our new Development Director, Ron has assured us that he
can raise millions. Outspoken about term limits, Ron is amenable to a shorter
trial contract with Isaiah. Before Shabbat services, we will be hosting a tea
party in the social hall to welcome him.
Meet our New Development Director
Fred Karger is a dynamic strategist, and we are excited
to have him on board. As the first openly gay candidate
running for the White House and the first Jewish
presidential candidate for the Republican Party, we
know we can count on Fred to courageously pioneer
Isaiah into a thrilling new chapter. After working on nine
presidential campaigns, running Isaiah’s annual High
Holy Day appeal will be a no-brainer.
Meet our New Communications Director
Herman Cain’s experience in the Navy makes him a
worldly and highly-cultured candidate for Isaiah’s team.
Conveniently, Herman will be able to stroll over to Fox
Studios in order to continue his popular radio talk show
during lunch breaks. Sunday morning after religious
school, join us for a reception to welcome him. We will
be serving Pillsbury cakes, burgers, pizza and Coca-Cola.
Meet our New Program Director
Michele Bachmann has a hearty
constitution. She champions all kinds of
reform, including her favorite, Reform
Judaism. The search committee was
particularly impressed with her proposal
to expand Isaiah’s Meal Train into a
comprehensive IsaiahCare initiative.
In her interview, Michele said, “I consider a congregant as
dear to me as a foster child.” We are excited for Michele to be
part of our temple family, and to enjoy her Torah-centered
programs.
Meet our New Membership Coordinator
Newt Gingrich is all about the welfare
of our community and has said so in his
vision statement “Contract with Isaiah.”
He has spent many hours with Temple
President Beth Braen, and she is assured
that he will not try to remove her from
office. Newt is very efficient and will have
us marching in formation in no time.
Meet our New Cantor
Mitt Romney sang in the Mormon
Tabernacle choir starting at age seven.
We were all taken by the spirituality he
brought to the pulpit but dissuaded when
we learned that his salary expectations
topped seven figures. In a surprising
twist, however, Mitt told the task force
that he would be paying his own salary. We will be welcoming
Mitt on board right after the Purim Shpiel on Wednesday,
March 7 with competitive sport and Maccabiah games.
FROM CANTOR KENT
PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL’S
BROTHER TO SPEAK AT
TEMPLE ISAIAH
Newt Gingrich, the current front-runner in the
Republican race for presidential nominee, has
assured the Temple Isaiah administration that his
brother will speak at Shabbat services on Friday,
March 9 at 6:15 p.m. The Gingrich family will then
host the Oneg Shabbat. Gingrich’s brother, known
affectionately as P.F. by his close allies and friends, hardly ever takes a political
stand but insists that he has risen above politics. “Like a loaf of freshly baked
bread, I have risen beyond the political fracas,” declared Gingrich’s brother
Poppin’ Fresh Gingrich. “For me, it is not about who becomes president but if
they’ll serve dinner rolls at every meal.”
“I refuse to take sides,” he declared in a meeting with Temple Isaiah president
Sara Lee Entenmann. “A good candidate should not be judged by his fiscal
policy or tax shelters but rather on his knowledge of easy-to-use and fun-tomake
baked goods. Nothing says Republican Party like my Funfetti Cupcakes.”
“Baking at home is the key to restoring family values in the United States,”
Poppin’ Fresh stated. “A family that spends a Saturday night frosting one of my
boxed cakes with a can of sugar-laden, additive-filled and preservative-based
frosting really represents a return to solid American values.” When asked if
his brother ever showed a penchant for making baked goods, Poppin’ Fresh
“Baking at home is the key to
restoring family values in the United States.”
refused to comment. But he later added, “Newt wasn’t one for the
baking, but he was always one for the eating…”
P.F. Gingrich also was proud to announce a new line of Jewish-themed
instant baked goods: roll-out rugelach, easy-bake hamantaschen and a
poppin’ fresh challah.
We are thrilled that Gingrich’s brother will celebrate with us, and
he promises to bring a roll of chocolate chip cookie dough for each
member of our congregation.
NO JOKE: KOL NIDRE
ON WEDNESDAY,
MARCH 28, 7:15 P.M.
BELMAR CHILD AND
FAMILY CENTER’S 24 TH
ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM
FRIDAY, MARCH 16,
9:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M.
KOL NIDRE IN MARCH?
You must be thinking this is some kind of joke. We know that the Jewish calendar
is often a little out of sync with our “regular” calendar, but how could we be
observing Yom Kippur in March?
This year Temple Isaiah has been chosen as a synagogue to pilot the new Kol Nidre
service that is part of the new Reform movement’s High Holy Day prayer book.
It is a chance to learn about the new prayer book, reflect on some of the liturgical
changes and have a second chance to hear the majestic music of Yom Kippur.
Join us for Kol Nidre in March - a chance to sing all those melodies, pray those
special prayers and help share your opinion about the development of a new
prayer book.
Belmar Child and Family Center is
a non-profit Child Guidance Clinic
whose therapists volunteer in the
LAUSD. Join us for the 24 th Annual
Symposium at Temple Isaiah. Students,
mental health workers and the lay
public are welcome. Speakers include
Dr. Bella Schimmel, psychiatrist and
horticulture therapist, and Thelma
Kornreich, art therapist. Also speaking
are therapists and teachers working in
hospitals, schools and the community.
No charge for this event.
FROM RABBI FRIMMER
WRITTEN BY… Rabbi Dara Frimmer and
Talmudic Humorist Allen Zipper
Queen Esther
A Combination of Hillary Clinton, Kim Kardashian,
Rachael Ray and Golda Meir in One Total Package!
After the liberation of Iraq, a team of archeologists discovered an artifact
that may validate the story of Purim. Hidden in the former Saddam Hussein
Museum of Intolerance is a small kernel that experts believe was used in the popular ancient carnival
booth “Your Name on a Grain of Couscous.” Under a microscope, the couscous revealed the loosely
translated inscription “Queen Esther = Hot.” But is it fair to characterize a great Jewish heroine by the
amount of information that fits on a piece of couscous?
For many, Queen Esther is primarily remembered for her beauty and for using feminine wiles to
manipulate King Ahashverosh. Some feminists believe that Esther’s predecessor Queen Vashti, who
refused to dance for the King at a drunken party, is a better female role model. But the great chauvinist
sage Menachem Ben Zvi counters, “There is no sin in shaking your shekel maker to save your people
from annihilation.” Sure, Esther could make men’s heads spin like a grogger, but both views paint the
Queen with too narrow a brush. She did use her feminine wiles to initially attract King Ahashverosh,
but she also implemented a cunning political strategy for which she risked her life setting it in motion.
Ignoring a royal edict, Esther appeared at the King’s court unannounced and invited him to a great
feast. At the party, she outwitted Haman by getting him to announce his insidious plan to kill all of the
Jews of Persia; then she shocked everyone by revealing that she was a Jew, and thus Haman would have
to kill the queen, as well. As they say, the rest is history. Esther used her God-given powers of beauty,
party-planning, political genius and bravery to save her people. She was, and always will be, the ultimate
Jewish heroine and role model!
“Esther used her God-given
powers of beauty, party-planning,
political genius and bravery
to save her people.”
FROM RABBI NICKERSON
It is with great pleasure and pride that I am
finally able to make an announcement about
an exciting project that I have been working on
for several months. As we are all aware, this
is an election year and that means candidates
have begun the process of working hard to
acquire the “Jewish vote.” While politicians
are busy building relationships with supporters
of Israel and identifying Jewish values that
may complement their views on domestic and foreign issues, there is
one candidate who has taken his relationship with Judaism to the next
level. I am proud to announce that President Obama is officially in the
process of converting to Judaism. I was honored to be chosen to be the
Reform clergy representative to serve on a panel of rabbis representing
the Humanist, Renewal, Reconstructionist, Conservative, Modern
Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox denominations of our faith. After several
meetings with the President’s advisors and a secret meeting with the
President himself (I am only now able to speak of this), the President
decided that Reform Judaism best represents the ideology and values by
which he wants to live the rest of his life. Of course, his family has also
been a part of this process, as such a significant decision impacts more
than just the President. I will be working with him one-on-one over
the course of this year to prepare for his conversion, and, because of my
affiliation with Temple Isaiah, I am happy to announce that President
Obama will be speaking from our pulpit during an upcoming campaign
stop in Los Angeles (details TBA due to security). I hope you can join
us for the momentous occasion as we welcome the President into our
synagogue, but, more importantly, as we wish him a hearty Mazel Tov
and welcome him into the Tribe!.
Celebrate Purim with the Beach Boys
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7
Grab your surf boards!
The Megillah According to Put on your Hawaiian
shirts! Get ready to turn
and twist and bugaloo
because Temple Isaiah’s
Purim Shpielers are at it
again and this year the
story of Purim is brought to life through the music and the antics of the
Beach Boys on Wednesday, March 7 starting with a 1960’s inspired dinner
at 6:15 p.m.*
Imagine Temple Isaiah’s sanctuary redecorated as a beach party complete
with a campfire, surf boards, tiki torches, a surf shack and two-hundred
beach balls. Then add the music of the Beach Boys, a bar in the lobby
serving mai-tais and daiquiris (and smoothies for the kids) and you have
got the ultimate Purim beach party. With all this dancing and surfing we
are not quite sure of the plot-but we know for sure that Esther will become
Queen, Mordechai will save the King’s life and Haman will swing (in the
real sense!!).
The festivities begin with a 1960’s inspired meal: TV dinners. We will enjoy
a meal of turkey and stuffing, apple cobbler and string beans. Dinner is
home-cooked by Tamar Andrews and her incredible crew of surf-bunnies
and lifeguards and it is served in cute TV dinner trays just like when we
were kids. Please go to the Temple Isaiah website to reserve your dinner
only (no reservation required for the shpiel): $6 per person.
The Purim shpiel follows with great dancing, singing
and, of course, the reading of the megillah.
Dinner starts at 6:15 p.m. and the Beach Boy Purim shpiel starts at
7:00 p.m. *Remember-you MUST make reservations for dinner.
LINES FROM THE LIBRARY
By Ellen G. Cole, Librarian
THE YEAR’S BEST JEWISH CHILDREN’S BOOKS
Shake your Purim grogger! Good News! On the way to the shpiel, I
heard the Association of Jewish Libraries proudly announce its coveted
Sydney Taylor Book Awards for 2012 for the most distinguished
contributions to Jewish children’s literature. Winners are a magical
holiday pop-up art book, an inspiring biography of a Jewish American
and an historical novel about a Jewish German boxing champ.
The 2012 Younger Readers’ gold medal winner is Chanukah Lights
by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Robert Sabuda. This exquisite book
celebrates Jewish history pairing poetic prose with intricate white papercut
pop-up art set against a rainbow ground for each of the eight nights.
The Older Readers’ Category gold medalist is Music Was It: Young
Leonard Bernstein by Susan Goldman Rubin. Bernstein realizes his
dream through determined hard work and a can-do spirit in the face
of family opposition. His story inspires readers who absorb history and
generational struggle.
Robert Sharenow captures the Teen Readers gold with The Berlin
Boxing Club. This enthralling historical novel during the Nazi regime
dramatically packs as many punches as the boxing; an assimilated Jewish teenager
morphs from victim to fighter saving his family and community.
There are seven Honor Winners and 18 Notable Books. Picture Book honors are
Naamah and the Ark at Night and Around the World in One Shabbat. Older Readers’
honors include Lily Renee, Escape Artist; Hammerin’ Hank Greenberg; and Irena’s Jar
of Secrets. Teen Honors are Then and The Blood Lie.
Winners receive a cash prize from the estate of Sydney Taylor, author of the All-ofa-Kind-Family
series, at the AJL convention in Pasadena in June. Taylor’s success
created American Jewish children’s literature. Librarian Ellen
Cole recommends these special books. Winners, honors,
notables and All-of-a-Kind-Family series are in the new
Library for you.
GREEN TEAM NEWS BY STEVE FOX
“Radical Amazement.” That was
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s
recipe for savoring life. If every
day we can keep alive the feelings
of that first encounter, that first
discovery, when the newness fills our
souls with wide-eyed exhilaration,
then our lives can be filled with
joy. Remember when we watched
the Apollo moon landing and
could barely sit in our seats? Today
another launch? What else is on
TV? The trick is to let ourselves be
continually amazed at what we hear,
what we see, what we smell and at
the messages from those senses that
we do not even know how to name.
Not all forms of radical amazement
induce pleasure. Some things are
truly amazing, but the effect is quite
different. When I think about the
fact that every five days (actually a
bit less) there are another million
people on the planet who need
food, fresh water and shelter and
before long, will want an education,
an iPad, a computer, a car and a
job, I am amazed. When I think
that when my father was a young
man and one Wright brother was
pushing the other to try to launch
this new-fangled contraption—a
glider—not even something with a
motor! And only one generation
later we transport over 500 people
at over 500 mph in a plane that costs
over $300 million. I am amazed!
And when I think that during the
10,000 years before the Industrial
Revolution started in the 1700s our
CO2 concentration rose less than
1%, and since then, it has risen 37%,
I am amazed.
That kind of amazement is part
of what keeps the Green Team
energized. There are many
motivational seminars given by
experts who charge huge fees for
their advice. Here is a great freebie
from Heschel. Give it a try!
PRESCHOOL
Tamar Andrews
Early Childhood
Program Director
Elections provide fertile teaching grounds for
discussions with young children. Truly! While
I do not necessarily espouse providing all the
details to young children about the election and politics
in general, I would share with children how our electoral
process works and that their voices, however singular
they may seem, have strength when added with other
voices. Children do not necessarily understand why the
candidates are seen so often on TV but you can talk about
speaking honestly so that people will understand who and
what you really are. You can talk about how choosing a
president is much like choosing a friend: you want to pick
someone who thinks like you do, likes the same things
you do and will be nice to other people. You can also
talk about the difference between other places where the
leaders are born and you have no choice but to follow
their rule, good or bad. And of how we have a democracy
where if our leaders are bad we can choose someone else
after a few years.
Many of our children face the same dilemmas that the
politicians face. How do I get people to like me? How do I make the right choices and not
give in to peer pressure? By including children in adult conversations, you send two very
important messages to your children: 1) that children are savvy enough to participate in
conversations to some degree and may even get the “big picture,” and 2) that all types of
conversations are fair game in your household and you can enjoy conversations of all types
with your child. By including children, you provide scripts for them to use in their own lives
when these issues come up. And they will not even need speechwriters
7 | THE ISAIAN
This will be my last article in
the Isaian for a little while.
Please do not be alarmed.
Allow me to explain:
After consultation with Rabbi Klein, the Religious Education
Committee, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud
Selig and the Executive Committee of the Associated Union
of Typewriter Mechanics (Local 3078), I will be taking a
leave of absence from my job in order to run for the office
of Los Angeles County Street Naming Committee member.
I have decided to use this space to answer the inevitable
questions about my decision to pursue public office and
its implications on the Temple. Please enjoy the following
bullet-pointed tidbits of information:
• Yes, I am aware that members of the Los Angeles
County Street Naming Committee are appointed,
not elected. Lacking both political connections and
sufficient funds to bribe public officials and, having
learned from certain members of our congregation
that write-in elections can be successful, I have
decided to run for office as a write-in candidate for a
write-in job. Hopefully, the political oligarchy of our
city will have no choice but to heed the call of the
millions of Los Angelenos whom I imagine will both
write my name and the office of Los Angeles County
Street Naming Committee member on their ballots.
(Please make sure you spell my name correctly. It has a
hyphen.)
• During my absence, a secret committee of religious
school third graders will be responsible for the dayto-day
operation of the school. They tell me they have
some good ideas for changing our school, and I know
you are already looking forward to hearing them.
• I am running for office on a platform of Jewish
education. The important learning we do here needs to
be reinforced in the minds of our students. In order to
provide constant reminders of what they have learned,
I plan to change the street name of every one of our
students’ home address to an important concept,
holiday ritual object, prayer or figure from Jewish
history. The only way to accomplish this important
goal is to get on the Street Naming Committee.
• To request a name for your own street, you may submit
an application and a processing fee of $500 (made
payable to “cash”) to my attention here at the Temple.
I have instructed the office staff to forward this mail to
my campaign headquarters.
I know this news comes as a great shock to you. But please
be assured that as I take this next step in my career as a
Jewish educator, I am following a dream I have had since
childhood. Please join me in realizing that dream by writing
in my name (remember the hyphen!) on election day.
