THE
Temple Isaiah Trip to Israel Exceeds Expectations
Currently, over one thousand people have placed $1000 dollar deposits for the opportunity
to travel to Israel with the clergy and fellow congregants.
It is no surprise that Temple Isaiah is planning an amazing trip to Israel
in 2012- but what has been a little bit surprising is the immediate
outpouring of interest and deposits that have been paid to the travel
agency to guarantee spaces on the trip. Currently, over one thousand people
have placed $1000 dollar deposits for the opportunity to travel to Israel with
the clergy and fellow congregants.
“It is the trip of a lifetime,” said Madeline Schwartz, as she stood in
line to hand over $1000 in one dollar bills to the Temple Isaiah
bookkeeper. “I cannot wait to get to Israel and eat real falafel;
that stuff they serve in Pico-Robertson is just awful.” Bar
Mitzvah students have raided their bank accounts to
pay for the trip. One recent Bar Mitzvah boy declared,
“A trip to Israel is better than a new computer, iPod
or even a car!! The memories from an Israel trip last a
lifetime; the car will only last until it falls apart!!”
With the surge of participants, Temple Isaiah has chartered three
new 747s. El Al airlines has promised to make this mega-mission
from Los Angeles feel right at home and will be serving a menu based
on the offerings from local restaurants John O’Groats and Islands.
Sigit Cohen, the vice president of El Al catering said, “It is a sure sign that
the Messiah is coming when El Al serves cheeseburgers at 35,000 feet.” In
addition to the friendly food offerings, El Al has revamped their security
procedures and will be employing Temple Isaiah’s own guards to safeguard
the crew. Mohammed and Kevin, of the TI security staff, are elated about
the possibility of traveling to Israel with so many of their TI friends.
Although there are a thousand people already signed up for this two-week
adventure in Israel, a few seats remain. To reserve your place now, please
log onto the newly-designed Temple Isaiah website
and follow the instructions. If you have any
questions, please contact Henrietta
Szold in the Temple Isaiah office.
TAMAR’S
GROGGERS!
There have been many changes to Reform Judaism, in large part as a response to global economic
downturns and health concerns. The Torah has always been considered a living entity. Judaism evolves
with the changing times, and so Judaism is once again evolving to meet the needs of its people with
changes to the following holidays:
The holiday of Purim, once upon a time only of celebration, is now being changed to Poorish…in recognition
of the many families that are too poor to purchase costumes, wine for merrymaking and the often lavish foods
and baskets for shalach manot. The same way a groom breaks a glass under the chupah to remind us of
the destruction of the Holy Temple, Poorish will serve as a named
reminder of the suffering that often accompanies our
happy simchas.
In response to the obesity epidemic, the holiday of
Sukkot is being renamed Sukahria…a play on the actual
Hebrew word for candy Sukkariah. Jewish children will
now be educated to understand that there is only one
week in the Jewish calendar where candy and junk food
is permissible: during the holiday of Sukariah.
Lastly, Passover, long considered a holiday
where the Jewish people get together
and have lavish meals, has always fallen
sometime around the Christian holiday
of Easter, when Christian families get
together to have lavish meals. Since
many families are intermarried or
celebrate both holidays because of
friendships, etc., rabbis and priests have concluded
that to save money but still celebrate the respective
holidays, we will now combine the two and rename
the new holiday for what it is, FEASTER. Jews and
Christians alike will enjoy the new Haggada which calls for
colored eggs on the seder plate, and children will get chocolate bunnies
(kosher for Passover, of course) after reciting the Four Questions.
These holidays will be incorporated in next year’s calendar.
Following the lead of their Senior
Rabbi Zoe Klein, Rabbi Kellner and
Rabbi Frimmer will each
be on sabbatical for the
next 3 months. Rabbi
Kellner will be serving
as the PGA Tour Chaplain.
His number one goal will be to
give spiritual direction to Tiger
Woods. Rabbi Frimmer will be
in Farm School learning how to
plant a congregation of carrots.
ROSH HASHANAH MORNING… IN MARCH IN THE EVENING FROM CANTOR KENT
This year, and
this year only, we
have the unique
opportunity
of celebrating
Rosh Hashanah
morning again
on a Thursday
evening in March.
Rosh HaShanah arrives (usually) in the
middle of September. We have friends
for dinner, eat apples and honey, hear the
singing of Avinu Malkeinu and listen to the
clarion calls of the shofar. After services,
we head to the beach and toss our sins (in
the shape of bread crumbs) into the Pacific
Ocean. This year, and this year only, we have
the unique opportunity of celebrating Rosh
Hashanah morning again on a Thursday
evening in March. Of course, it is not
really Rosh Hashanah- but we are going to
pretend it is.
On Thursday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m., we
are all going to gather at Temple Isaiah and
make-believe that it is Rosh Hashanah.
Why are we doing this? Because, Temple
Isaiah has been chosen as a pilot-site for
the new High Holy Day prayer book,
which is currently being “beta tested.” As
a member of the editorial committee for
this new prayer book, I wanted to make
sure that our congregation had the ability
to try out the new book well in advance
of its publication date. We will have an
opportunity to hear all the beautiful High
Holy Day music, chant many of our favorite
prayers and engage in discussion about the
new machzor (High Holy Day prayer book)
after the mock service. In addition, those
who attend the service will participate in an
online survey to offer comments about the
prayer book.
To get you all in the mood, please join me
and the rabbis before the service at 7:00
p.m. for some apples and honey and other
sweet treats to welcome the “New Year.”
ISRAEL: HOMELAND
JORDI SCHUSTER BATTIS (RABBINIC INTERN)
Israel is in the news.
Isaiah’s Israel trip is planned for next year.
But, what do we actually think about Israel? What conversations about Israel do we want to be part of—or not want to be part of at all? How do we
participate in discussions about Israel within our own community, given all we do not know, given all that we are ambivalent about, given all that keeps
changing there—and given our commitments to our Jewish lives here in our home in America?
With all these questions in mind, Temple Isaiah is launching a series of Israel Salons, hosted in congregants’ homes, led together by congregants and Cantor
Kent or myself. In these Salons we will explore the questions of what it means to have a relationship with Israel in the first place.
We will be advertising these Salons in the months ahead and hope you will join us for one. If you have never been to Israel, this is a chance to explore that
relationship from here at home. If you are thinking about going to Israel, this is an opportunity to tease out why you feel it is important to you to go. If you
have been to Israel, this is a way to think back about what your time there has meant, and continues to mean, to you.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
their children presents. Come with your child to the Temple
office and exchange your gift for a beautiful certificate of
GREEN TEAM
GROGGERS
Ten Commandments
Going to 11
By the slimmest of majorities, the C.C.A.R.
(Central Conference of American Rabbis) has
chosen to propose increasing the number of
commandments to 11. Since Reform Jews believe
the Torah was divinely inspired, it was argued
that this inspiration did not stop at Sinai. Surely
we must have learned something since then that
should be elevated to the commandment level!
Although the number 10 has special
significance for Jews, it was felt a prime
number would have more mystical value. A
contingent pressed for an expansion to 13, but
since most large buildings in NYC do not even
recognize a 13th floor, they
backed down after choosing
not to fight the unchallengeable
grip of blind superstition.
To the Green Team, always
willing to embrace forward-looking (although
some think, cockamamie) concepts, this made
perfect sense. When we got the Decalogue,
there were not many people around, the
world was agrarian, the industrial revolution
was three millennia away... who could even
contemplate the human race making any kind
of an impact on the planet? God did think
about our responsibility to till and tend the
earth, but it did not get a lot of promotion.
Things are so different now. The risks are so
large, and our resources are being gobbled up
so quickly. We need a powerful statement,
a commandment, whose repetition would
constantly motivate us to live sustainably
on this planet. Send your suggestions to
minusksf@aol.com, and we will forward them
to the C.C.A.R.
LINES FROM THE LIBRARY
By Ellen G. Cole, Librarian
THE YEAR’S BEST JEWISH CHILDREN’S BOOKS
Here is news to shake your Purim grogger! On the way to the shpiel,
I heard the Association of Jewish Libraries proudly announce its
coveted Sydney Taylor Book Awards for 2011 for the most distinguished
contributions to Jewish children’s literature. Winners are a calming tale
of tikkun olam, an imaginative graphic novel and a suspenseful family
drama.
The 2011 Younger Readers’ gold medal winner is Gathering Sparks by
Howard Schwartz, illustrated by Kristina Swarner. Good deeds bring
peace to our world in this moving picture book which gives a new
interpretation to the vessel holding light.
The Older Readers’ Category gold medalist is Hereville: How Mirka
Got Her Sword by Barry Deutsch. In his exciting tale, a headstrong girl
balances daring deeds, fantasies and Jewish observance.
Dana Reinhardt captures the Teen Readers’ gold with The Things a
Brother Knows. A military hero returns home; he refuses to re-engage
with his family; his younger brother fears he will never again be normal.
There are nine Honor and 27 Notable Books. Picture Book honors
include Modeh Ani, Emma’s Poem, and the re-illustrated Cakes and
Miracles. Older Readers’ honors
are Resistance, One is Not a Lonely
Number and Black Radishes. Teen
Honors are Hush, Once and Life,
After.
Winners receive a cash prize from the
estate of Sydney Taylor, author of the
All-of-a-Kind-Family series, at the AJL
convention in Montreal in June. Taylor’s
success created American Jewish children’s
literature. Librarian Ellen Cole recommends these special books.
Winners, honors, notables and All-of-a-Kind-Family series are in the
new Library for you.
