LINES FROM THE LIBRARY
By Ellen G. Cole, Librarian
THE YEAR’S BEST JEWISH CHILDREN’S BOOKS
Here is news to shake your Purim grogger! On the way to the shpiel,
I heard the Association of Jewish Libraries proudly announce its
coveted Sydney Taylor Book Awards for 2011 for the most distinguished
contributions to Jewish children’s literature. Winners are a calming tale
of tikkun olam, an imaginative graphic novel and a suspenseful family
drama.
The 2011 Younger Readers’ gold medal winner is Gathering Sparks by
Howard Schwartz, illustrated by Kristina Swarner. Good deeds bring
peace to our world in this moving picture book which gives a new
interpretation to the vessel holding light.
The Older Readers’ Category gold medalist is Hereville: How Mirka
Got Her Sword by Barry Deutsch. In his exciting tale, a headstrong girl
balances daring deeds, fantasies and Jewish observance.
Dana Reinhardt captures the Teen Readers’ gold with The Things a
Brother Knows. A military hero returns home; he refuses to re-engage
with his family; his younger brother fears he will never again be normal.
There are nine Honor and 27 Notable Books. Picture Book honors
include Modeh Ani, Emma’s Poem, and the re-illustrated Cakes and
Miracles. Older Readers’ honors
are Resistance, One is Not a Lonely
Number and Black Radishes. Teen
Honors are Hush, Once and Life,
After.
Winners receive a cash prize from the
estate of Sydney Taylor, author of the
All-of-a-Kind-Family series, at the AJL
convention in Montreal in June. Taylor’s
success created American Jewish children’s
literature. Librarian Ellen Cole recommends these special books.
Winners, honors, notables and All-of-a-Kind-Family series are in the
new Library for you.
