TAMAR’S
GROGGERS!
There have been many changes to Reform Judaism, in large part as a response to global economic
downturns and health concerns. The Torah has always been considered a living entity. Judaism evolves
with the changing times, and so Judaism is once again evolving to meet the needs of its people with
changes to the following holidays:
The holiday of Purim, once upon a time only of celebration, is now being changed to Poorish…in recognition
of the many families that are too poor to purchase costumes, wine for merrymaking and the often lavish foods
and baskets for shalach manot. The same way a groom breaks a glass under the chupah to remind us of
the destruction of the Holy Temple, Poorish will serve as a named
reminder of the suffering that often accompanies our
happy simchas.
In response to the obesity epidemic, the holiday of
Sukkot is being renamed Sukahria…a play on the actual
Hebrew word for candy Sukkariah. Jewish children will
now be educated to understand that there is only one
week in the Jewish calendar where candy and junk food
is permissible: during the holiday of Sukariah.
Lastly, Passover, long considered a holiday
where the Jewish people get together
and have lavish meals, has always fallen
sometime around the Christian holiday
of Easter, when Christian families get
together to have lavish meals. Since
many families are intermarried or
celebrate both holidays because of
friendships, etc., rabbis and priests have concluded
that to save money but still celebrate the respective
holidays, we will now combine the two and rename
the new holiday for what it is, FEASTER. Jews and
Christians alike will enjoy the new Haggada which calls for
colored eggs on the seder plate, and children will get chocolate bunnies
(kosher for Passover, of course) after reciting the Four Questions.
These holidays will be incorporated in next year’s calendar.
Following the lead of their Senior
Rabbi Zoe Klein, Rabbi Kellner and
Rabbi Frimmer will each
be on sabbatical for the
next 3 months. Rabbi
Kellner will be serving
as the PGA Tour Chaplain.
His number one goal will be to
give spiritual direction to Tiger
Woods. Rabbi Frimmer will be
in Farm School learning how to
plant a congregation of carrots.
