GREEN TEAM GROGGERS Ten Commandments Going to 11 By the slimmest of majorities, the C.C.A.R. (Central Conference of American Rabbis) has chosen to propose increasing the number of commandments to 11. Since Reform Jews believe the Torah was divinely inspired, it was argued that this inspiration did not stop at Sinai. Surely we must have learned something since then that should be elevated to the commandment level! Although the number 10 has special significance for Jews, it was felt a prime number would have more mystical value. A contingent pressed for an expansion to 13, but since most large buildings in NYC do not even recognize a 13th floor, they backed down after choosing not to fight the unchallengeable grip of blind superstition. To the Green Team, always willing to embrace forward-looking (although some think, cockamamie) concepts, this made perfect sense. When we got the Decalogue, there were not many people around, the world was agrarian, the industrial revolution was three millennia away... who could even contemplate the human race making any kind of an impact on the planet? God did think about our responsibility to till and tend the earth, but it did not get a lot of promotion. Things are so different now. The risks are so large, and our resources are being gobbled up so quickly. We need a powerful statement, a commandment, whose repetition would constantly motivate us to live sustainably on this planet.
