GREEN TEAM NEWS BY STEVE FOX “Radical Amazement.” That was Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s recipe for savoring life. If every day we can keep alive the feelings of that first encounter, that first discovery, when the newness fills our souls with wide-eyed exhilaration, then our lives can be filled with joy. Remember when we watched the Apollo moon landing and could barely sit in our seats? Today another launch? What else is on TV? The trick is to let ourselves be continually amazed at what we hear, what we see, what we smell and at the messages from those senses that we do not even know how to name. Not all forms of radical amazement induce pleasure. Some things are truly amazing, but the effect is quite different. When I think about the fact that every five days (actually a bit less) there are another million people on the planet who need food, fresh water and shelter and before long, will want an education, an iPad, a computer, a car and a job, I am amazed. When I think that when my father was a young man and one Wright brother was pushing the other to try to launch this new-fangled contraption—a glider—not even something with a motor! And only one generation later we transport over 500 people at over 500 mph in a plane that costs over $300 million. I am amazed! And when I think that during the 10,000 years before the Industrial Revolution started in the 1700s our CO2 concentration rose less than 1%, and since then, it has risen 37%, I am amazed. That kind of amazement is part of what keeps the Green Team energized. There are many motivational seminars given by experts who charge huge fees for their advice. PRESCHOOL Tamar Andrews Early Childhood Program Director Elections provide fertile teaching grounds for discussions with young children. Truly! While I do not necessarily espouse providing all the details to young children about the election and politics in general, I would share with children how our electoral process works and that their voices, however singular they may seem, have strength when added with other voices. Children do not necessarily understand why the candidates are seen so often on TV but you can talk about speaking honestly so that people will understand who and what you really are. You can talk about how choosing a president is much like choosing a friend: you want to pick someone who thinks like you do, likes the same things you do and will be nice to other people. You can also talk about the difference between other places where the leaders are born and you have no choice but to follow their rule, good or bad. And of how we have a democracy where if our leaders are bad we can choose someone else after a few years. Many of our children face the same dilemmas that the politicians face. How do I get people to like me? How do I make the right choices and not give in to peer pressure? By including children in adult conversations, you send two very important messages to your children: 1) that children are savvy enough to participate in conversations to some degree and may even get the “big picture,” and 2) that all types of conversations are fair game in your household and you can enjoy conversations of all types with your child. By including children, you provide scripts for them to use in their own lives when these issues come up. And they will not even need speechwriters Temple Isaiah Presents A family Passover seder with Rabbi Joel and Tamar Saturday April 7, 5:00 p.m. Second night of Passover Join us for an exciting journey through the story of Passover as we read the tales, eat the foods and drink our way from bondage to freedom. This 2 nd night seder is appropriate for all ages. A scrumptious meal of Kosher for Passover food, prepared in our own kitchen, will be served. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Joshua Mason-Barkin Director of Congregational Learning 7 | THE ISAIAN This will be my last article in the Isaian for a little while. Please do not be alarmed. Allow me to explain: After consultation with Rabbi Klein, the Religious Education Committee, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and the Executive Committee of the Associated Union of Typewriter Mechanics (Local 3078), I will be taking a leave of absence from my job in order to run for the office of Los Angeles County Street Naming Committee member. I have decided to use this space to answer the inevitable questions about my decision to pursue public office and its implications on the Temple. Please enjoy the following bullet-pointed tidbits of information: • Yes, I am aware that members of the Los Angeles County Street Naming Committee are appointed, not elected. Lacking both political connections and sufficient funds to bribe public officials and, having learned from certain members of our congregation that write-in elections can be successful, I have decided to run for office as a write-in candidate for a write-in job. Hopefully, the political oligarchy of our city will have no choice but to heed the call of the millions of Los Angelenos whom I imagine will both write my name and the office of Los Angeles County Street Naming Committee member on their ballots. (Please make sure you spell my name correctly. It has a hyphen.) • During my absence, a secret committee of religious school third graders will be responsible for the dayto-day operation of the school. They tell me they have some good ideas for changing our school, and I know you are already looking forward to hearing them. • I am running for office on a platform of Jewish education. The important learning we do here needs to be reinforced in the minds of our students. In order to provide constant reminders of what they have learned, I plan to change the street name of every one of our students’ home address to an important concept, holiday ritual object, prayer or figure from Jewish history. The only way to accomplish this important goal is to get on the Street Naming Committee. • To request a name for your own street, you may submit an application and a processing fee of $500 (made payable to “cash”) to my attention here at the Temple. I have instructed the office staff to forward this mail to my campaign headquarters. I know this news comes as a great shock to you. But please be assured that as I take this next step in my career as a Jewish educator, I am following a dream I have had since childhood.
