MOUNTAIN HARDWEAR TENTS 2005
PERFORMANCE THROUGH DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
For Mountain Hardwear, tents are not just another product line, it is the core of who
we are. There isn’t any single element that makes our tents perform so well. Rather,
it’s the combination of innovative design, thoughtful material choices and careful
attention to details that makes the difference. With years of designing, producing and
testing tents in wind-tunnels, rain-rooms and on Himalayan slopes we have learned that the
details matter most. In a time when competitors seem more concerned with the color of their
tents than with their construction, Mountain Hardwear has continued patiently making tents with
our original philosophy. A look at our tent’s key features and you’ll understand why they’re so good
and in a league above the competition.
WIND TUNNEL TESTING
TESTING METHODS
Computer aided Finite Elemental Analysis. Through our
continued partnership with Yunan Aluminum we are able to take
advantage of their engineering and testing facilities. FEA was
used to model and determine the best shape for the Atlas
floating connector to disperse stress evenly across pole sections.
Their expertise allows them to maintain impressive standards in
examining designs and ensuring quality.
Computer aided wind-tunnel simulations. Yunan has spent years
developing a program to test a tent against simulated winds, to
determine the weak points of a design. This information enables
us to design tents that are stronger and lighter than ever. Every
Mountain Hardwear expedition tent has undergone this testing,
and the results have been verified with actual wind-tunnel
testing at an airforce base.
Expedition testing by real world experts. Such as: Greenland with
Mike Libecki, Annapurna with Ed Viesturs, Mt. Vinson with Robert
Link. Our professionals and athletes have tested tents in the
harshest conditions on the planet. With their help we are able to
challenge our assumptions and refine our designs.
Every Mountain Hardwear tent with our Watertight Guarantee has
been thoroughly tested in our custom built Rainroom, which was
developed to simulate the wettest, worse possible weather. Each
tent is drenched with 1200 inches of wind driven rain over 24
hours. Years of testing tents in our Rainroom help us to design
and produce tents that are completely Watertight off the shelf.
No leak, no seam sealing, no fuss.
MATERIALS
Whether it’s fabric, aluminum alloys or Delrin tent clips, we have sought out
the finest materials available for constructing tents. From scandium poles to
solution dyed polyester or siliconized flysheets, we use cutting edge
materials that are stronger, more durable and more waterproof. A key
example of this is the polyether urethane coating found on the floors of our
expedition and super-light tents, it is more than 4 times more durable than
regular polyester urethane coatings.
CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES & FEATURES
We just don’t build tents, we build your tent. A tent has 3 purposes, to keep
you dry, safe and happy. To keep you dry, we tape the fly and floor seams to
include the off ground perimeter seam. Painstakingly welded floor corners,
guy clip anchors and door flaps further watertight your tent. To keep you
safe we have included guy out points with clip anchors instead of Velcro that
won’t hold in wind. To keep you happy we have sewn in convenient storage
pockets, gear loops, adjustable vents and windows. Inside every Mountain
Hardwear tent you will find many construction techniques and features that
we believe makes them more functional, more livable and a little more likely
to call your own.
WIND SPEED: 20 MPH
ATLAS POLE SYSTEM
RAIN OVER 24 HOUR PERIOD: 1,200 INCHES
EXPEDITION TESTED, MT. EVEREST
Our strategic partnership with Yunan Aluminum and independent engineer
Frank Tehan has resulted in a stream of innovative products such as: Cold
forged Atlas floating connectors that are corrosion resistant and disperse
force more evenly. Delrin Shok tips that are field serviceable & won’t
oxidize or crack pole ends. Dual diameter Atlas XL poles that strengthen
tents from side load winds.
INNOVATION
Our constant goal is to make tents better. A tent that is lighter, stronger,
simpler & more convenient to use. Our many proprietary & patented
methods for guy-clip anchors, welded zipper flaps, welded & taped corners,
crossflow venting, tension shelf and tension arch help set us above the rest.
At the end of the day we know it’s now about how many patents or
proprietary gadgets we have, it’s about making the best quality tent
available to you.
