The Sweet Shack
In Brief:
Drag tiles onto the grid in
order to create a route for
the sweets to travel down.
This activity develops
modelling, problem solving
skills and spatial awareness.
Where is Charlie?
In Brief:
Select pieces of an image and
then drag and drop them into
place to create simple pictures
of Charlie and his home.
This activity develops
modelling, problem-solving
skills and spatial awareness.
Level 1: Six different tiles available.
Level 2: Six different tiles and more complex shapes.
Level 3: Three tiles that can be rotated and an extra tile that
alternates the exit route of the sweet.
How to solve it:
1. Choose a tile from the selection on the left of the screen.
2. Click on the tile you want and drag and drop it onto the grid.
3. Continue doing this until you have created a route from the
top of the machine down to the mouth of the sweet bag.
4. When you have completed the route, click on the arrows at
the top left of the screen and fire two sweets into the
machine. This will fill the party bag with sweets.
5. The party bag will now move and you will need to rearrange
the tiles to create another route for the remaining sweets to
travel down.
16
Level 1: Four pieces per puzzle. Pieces only stay in place if
correct. Three pictures presented; the first two have outline
sketches to help.
Level 2: Nine pieces per puzzle. Pieces only stay in place if
correct. Three pictures presented; the first two have outline
sketches to help.
Level 3: Nine pieces per puzzle. Pieces will stay in any position.
No outline sketches.
How to solve it:
1. Select a piece from the left of the screen by clicking on it.
2. Drag and drop it onto the image on the right.
3. Repeat until you create a complete picture of Charlie’s house.
4. Another image will then appear. Complete this image in the
same way.
5. When complete, you will need to find Charlie and click on
him.
6. The final task requires you to piece together an image of
Charlie.
CHARLIE CHIMP’S BIG MODELLING PARTY
Bertie Bat’s House
In Brief:
Move the lifts up and down
to help Charlie reach the exit
of the bamboo maze.
This activity develops
modelling, problem-solving
skills and spatial awareness.
Charlie’s Deliveries
In Brief:
Help Charlie to deliver his
invitations using simple Logo
instructions.
This activity introduces simple
Logo in a problem-solving
situation.
Level 1: Three screens presented. Screen one has one lift. Other
screens have two each.
Level 2: Three screens presented. Up to six lifts presented.
Level 3: Three screens presented. Up to six lifts presented. Time
delay caused by trapping Charlie required.
How to solve it:
1. As Charlie walks through the maze there are a number of
lifts that need to be moved in order for him to continue.
2. If Charlie needs to move down with one of the lifts, click on
the ‘down’ arrow when he is standing on the lift platform.
3. If he needs to move up with the lift, click on the ‘up’ arrow
when he is standing on the lift platform.
4. Continue to move the lifts in the correct direction until
Charlie has exited the maze.
Level 1: Few obstructions to navigate around. Four directional
tiles available. Individual instructions input.
Level 2: More obstructions than Level 1. Four directional tiles
available plus a ‘forward two spaces’ tile. Individual instructions
input.
Level 3: More obstructions than Level 2. Four directional tiles
available plus a ‘forward two spaces’ tile. The whole program
needs to be built before running.
How to solve it:
1. Each of the pieces to the right of the map represents a
direction/action. They are called ‘directional tiles’.
2. Select the direction you want Charlie to travel in by clicking on
one of these tiles. The tile will then drop into the action line.
Charlie will move according to the instruction you give him.
3. Direct Charlie to his friend’s house. When he arrives there he
will deliver his invitation.
Dressing Charlie Chimp
In Brief:
Drag and drop clothes onto
Charlie so that he is suitably
dressed for a range of
specified activities.
This activity develops
ordering, decision-making
and classification skills within
a modelling situation.
Level 1: All the clothes required are in one cupboard. Clothes
must be put on in the correct order.
Level 2: Clothes are in four cupboards. Decoy items are
presented which are clearly wrong.
Level 3: Clothes are in five cupboards. Decoy items are
presented which are clearly wrong.
How to solve it:
1. Open one of the cupboards by clicking on it. Inside will be a
selection of clothing.
2. Click on the item you want Charlie to wear and drag and
drop it onto him. If it is the correct item, it will stay on
Charlie. If it isn’t, it will move back into the cupboard and
you must select another piece.
3. When you have finished with the cupboard, select another by
clicking on it.
4. When he has a complete outfit, Charlie will appear on the
screen enjoying the activity you dressed him for.
The Party Game
In Brief:
Fire the ball from the see-saw,
over the tower, to land on Sadie
Seal’s nose. Experiment to work
out which elephant to use.
This activity introduces
modelling and develops an
awareness of changing
variables to see ‘what if…’
Level 1: Four elephants presented in size order. Different sized balls
presented.
Level 2: Four elephants presented in any order. Ball is always the
same size.
Level 3: Five elephants presented in any order. Ball is always the
same size.
How to solve it:
1. Select an elephant to jump off the tower by clicking on it.
2. If it is the correct elephant, the ball will land on Sadie’s nose.
If it is not correct, the ball will miss and you will need to choose
another elephant.
3. If the ball travelled too far, you will need to try a smaller
elephant and vice-versa.
Running the program without the CD
It is possible to install the entire contents of Charlie Chimp’s Big
Modelling Party on to your hard drive. To do this you will need
to run the Network Install file on the CD. When prompted for
the destinations of the data and saves folders etc, ensure that
you specify folders on your local hard drive as the location. After
installation is complete, you will find that the software will run
without the CD in the drive.
Note: You are not permitted to do this if viewing the software
on approval. You must also ensure that you do not break the
licensing agreement by exceeding the number of licences you
own. Always be sure to check your licensing agreement.
Sound clipping, incomplete sentences or corrupt sound
If you experience corrupt or distorted sound, try the following:
Select Start>Settings>Control Panel
Select the Sounds and Multimedia icon (on some systems
this will be called Multimedia)
Select the Audio tab
Click the Advanced button on the Sound Playback section
Select the Performance tab
Now set the Hardware acceleration to None and the Sample
rate conversion quality to the middle setting.
Note: You may require slightly different settings to these, so
some experimentation may be required.
Click Apply then OK
Run the program to see if you have sound
