HONORING 45 YEARS<br />
MARTHA B. CRAFT<br />
Martha B. Craft was hired on January 18, 1965 as a<br />
Clerk-Timekeeper in a department known then as<br />
Refuse Collection.<br />
She was quickly promoted from a Clerk Typist I to<br />
Clerk Typist II in 1973; to a Clerk-Typist III in 1978;<br />
and to Administrative Secretary in 1985; position was<br />
reclassified to Administrative Assistant III in 2009,<br />
where she remained until her retirement on July 1,<br />
2010.<br />
Ms. Craft received many accolades for her tireless<br />
commitment to the department and superb<br />
attendance; and enrolled in many training seminars<br />
to increase her knowledge which made her more <strong>of</strong><br />
an asset to the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Roanoke</strong> and its citizens.

A co-worker recently stated that when she began<br />
working in the Child Care Unit, she needed much<br />
assistance in learning the details <strong>of</strong> the position.<br />
Although she asked questions several times a day,<br />
Karen never said “no” and always made her feel that<br />
it was okay to ask for help. She continued by<br />
describing Karen as a very intuitive social worker<br />
and expressed sincere joy for the opportunity to work<br />
with her. Karen is truly an asset to the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Roanoke</strong> family.<br />
KAREN KIMBROUGH<br />
Karen began her employment with the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Roanoke</strong> in 1976 under the Comprehensive<br />
Employment and Training Act (CETA) and soon<br />
thereafter obtained permanent employment as an<br />
eligibility worker in 1977; within a year she was<br />
promoted to a social worker position. In 1982, she<br />
was chosen for an article in The <strong>Roanoke</strong> Times on<br />
“A day in the life <strong>of</strong> a Social Worker.”

DONITA PEVERALL<br />
Donita Peverall began her career with the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Roanoke</strong> in<br />
1976 as an intake eligibility worker with the Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Social <strong>Service</strong>s. Two years later, she was promoted to the<br />
position <strong>of</strong> social worker, and in 2007, Donita was promoted to<br />
Senior Social Worker working as a Prevention <strong>Service</strong>s Worker.<br />
She served as Chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Social <strong>Service</strong>s Child Welfare<br />
Enhancement Project Committee, under her leadership, the<br />
Committee was instrumental in implementing reunification<br />
services, increasing the prevention staff and creating a <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Foster Care Transition Worker position.<br />
In 2009, Donita accepted the position <strong>of</strong> Social Work<br />
Supervisor, to expand the assist with the expansion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
agency’s Prevention <strong>Service</strong>s Program and she developed the<br />
new Community-based Prevention Program with the assistance<br />
<strong>of</strong> out-stationed social workers at the Villages at Lincoln and<br />
Jamestown Place complexes.<br />
A local judge nick-named her “Wonder Woman” because <strong>of</strong> her<br />
ability to develop successful outcomes for troubled families.

RALPH TARTAGLIA<br />
Deputy Fire Chief Ralph Tartaglia began his<br />
career with the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Roanoke</strong> as a firefighter in<br />
1976. He was promoted to a Lieutenant position in<br />
1982 and Captain in 1985. In 1999, he became a<br />
Battalion Chief, an Assistant Fire Chief in 2003 and<br />
currently serves as Deputy Chief <strong>of</strong> Operations.<br />
Chief Tartaglia has been team leader for<br />
several FEMA deployments; he is described as<br />
dependable, hardworking, fair and kind by his fellow<br />
comrades and has received numerous letters <strong>of</strong><br />
commendation from citizens and businesses over the<br />
course <strong>of</strong> his career.<br />
Deputy Fire Chief Tartaglia is to be commended<br />
for his dedication to duty as he continues to serve<br />
the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Roanoke</strong> and its citizens.
