Rosapepe’s Report
By Senator Jim Rosapepe
(D-21)
In response to constituency
concern from Beltsville residents,
the 21 st District Delegates and I are
asking the Prince George’s liquor
board to take away the license of
Sunrise Restaurant & Sports Bar
on Rhode Island Avenue.
Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk
spoke for Delegates Barbara
Frush, Ben Barnes, and me at the
Board’s March 14 hearing. In our
letter, we said:
“As you may be aware, Sunrise
Restaurant & Sports Bar was the
site of a recent shooting. According
to the County Police, on January
28, 2007 at one o’clock in the
morning, a verbal fight broke out
at Sunrise Restaurant & Sports Bar
between a regular customer and a
non-regular customer. The fight
escalated, and the regular patron
shot the other patron in the right
leg. There were six witnesses.
The shooter then fled the scene.
The wounded was taken to Prince
George’s Hospital Center. One
witness knew the contact information
of the regular customer,
which was given to the police. A
warrant has been issued and the
suspect has not been apprehended.
In December, they were cited by
your liquor inspector for distributing
free drinks.
“As you are aware, it is the
responsibility of the holder of the
license to ensure that the activities
which take place in the establishment
are not harmful to the surrounding
neighborhood. Clearly,
this is a responsibility that the
and is currently serving as a member
of the Classical Chinese Garden
Design Team and a representative
of North American-China
Plant Exploration Consortium. As
always we have plants for our
door prize table and refreshments
after the meeting. The public is
welcomed and admission is free.
Beltsville Young
at Heart Club
By Barbara Schofield
A charter change was adopted
at the March 1st business meeting.
All members will now pay yearly
dues with no age exceptions. This
is needed, as we do not have our
big fall money raiser anymore.
Lois read the minutes and all old
and new business was taken care
Senator Jim Rosapepe
owners of Sunrise Restaurant &
Sports Bar have not met. The
safety and welfare of our community
is of paramount importance
and it is your responsibility to
ensure that area businesses meet
their obligations. It is the Board’s
responsibility to take appropriate
action when they do not.
“For these reasons, we request
that the Board decline to renew
this license this year. The citizens
of Beltsville deserve better.”
Both the Senate and House have
approved Governor O’Malley’s
budget which boosts state funding
for our local schools by 15%,
helps control development by buying
more parkland, and supports
the University of Maryland.
Delegate Barnes’ bill requiring
home builders to install carbon
of. One hundred and seven members
attended and there was one
guest, Maize Coon.
Now, what sound do porcupines
make when they kiss? OUCH! Lots
of green at the March 15th meeting.
This was great entertainment
by the Irishmen Choral. A little
Irish history along with real Irish
music, it was wonderful. Very
Green. I hope you all got to drink
your green beer on St. Patties Day.
The luncheon on April 5 was discussed
and Pearl gave us some trip
news. We have a Dorothy Meagan
Riverboat Cruise Crab Feast
on September 20 still open; this
is a really fun trip with excellent
crabs and food. Call Pearl Stavely
for more info at 301.498.2666.
We also have a Myrtle Beach trip
on Oct. 21-26. Now start your
garden, just plant some hope and
watch it grow. Everybody has a
green thumb for this. Come join
us. We are a fun bunch.
monoxide alarms in new homes
passed the House in March. The
bill’s purpose is to reduce the leading
cause of accidental poisoning
deaths in America. Another of
Delegate Barnes’ bills – exempting
Prince George’s deputy sheriffs
from transfer taxes when they
buy a home – passed the House as
well. It’s good to encourage these
law enforcement officers to buy
homes in our community.
Under the leadership of Delegate
Frush, the House passed
legislation to keep Laurel Hospital
open and put in place a long
term plan to win state financial
help to cover the costs of hospital
care provided to Prince George’s
residents without health insurance.
I’m working on this effort
in the Senate and we hope to solve
this problem once and for all this
year.
The Delegates and I were
pleased to see more than 90 of
our constituents join us at our 21 st
District reception in Annapolis.
Among the Beltsville residents
who attended were Myra Kovach,
Doug Walker, Renford Freemantle,
Clyde Lassell, Gabe Adolphe,
Ivy Christoffers, Nan Randall, and
Ed Brenner. County Councilman
Tom Dernoga and former Delegate
Brian Moe, who will soon
be going to work for Governor
O’Malley in a high level position,
also attended.
We can be reached at Senator.
Rosapepe@inbox.com or 301 858
3141. Please feel free to be in
touch if the Delegates and I can be
of help to you.
