involvement in schools.
1 aaaaahhhhhhhhhh Apr 21, 2008 8:09 AM
2 I would like to volunteer to help the coaches but I was told it was too difficult to
get approval for parents to assist in the school. This just doesn't make much
sense when the coaches have a lot of participants in an after-school sport.
Apr 16, 2008 12:41 PM
3 chaperoning field trips Apr 11, 2008 1:02 PM
4 the whole educational system severly needs to be updated. They are still
teaching the same information as when I was in school. Alot of that information
was difficult to obtain in my school years therefore needed to be thoroughly
taught. Now in this "information age" students need to know more major
concepts and less minor details. For instance, memorizing the entire perodic
table of elements is not necessary but understanding it is necessary. If the kids
today need to see where something is on the table today, they only need to turn
on their computer or access it via their cellphones.
Apr 10, 2008 4:51 PM
5 My child rarely gets his tests/quizes to take home to review Apr 2, 2008 8:29 AM
6 MOre communication from teacher to parents if student is struggling in class.
More teacher/ coach interest and encouragement, especially for students who
struggle and seem to get lost between the cracks- a little extra
encouragement/understanding could make a huge difference.
7 The single most important tool that Rockwood has to improve parent/guardian
involvement with my child's education is the Infinite Campus web site.
Unfortunately, the usage of this tool by teachers is not anywhere close to where
it should be. A few teachers do a very good job of entering expected homework
assignments and tests with enough details and lead time to allow the parents to
review and plan study time with their children. Most teachers, however, only use
it as a mechanism to post grades and often the grades are posted fairly late.
The second key area where improvements could be made in parent/guardian
involvement is the apparent lack of consistent policy regarding the return of
graded tests to students so that the graded tests can come home for review. We
have had a number of teachers that have been reluctant to send graded tests
home. Frankly, I cannot understand why our School Board does not have a
district-wide policy that all graded tests should be sent home for review by
parents. As a parent, it is very annoying to have to argue with teachers about
the right to review graded tests at home.
8 re: the above "possibility". Students are not allowed to take tests home. It would
be impossible to review a low test score w/ a student. I check infinite campus
and discuss what I belive are warning signs that my student is not understanding
content. In 4 years, teachers have not contacted me when a F or D is received
on a major test. THey have too much to do to monitor individual students.
Students should be able to bring home tests for parents to review, both the good
tests scores, and the weaker tests.
9 Since the inception of broader use of infinite campus that direct contact between
teacher and parent has become non-existent. If my student has had issues or
the teacher was observing a behavior in class nothing has been brought forth to
my attention until a progress report was received. A heads up to a parent would
be nice. Not all teachers keep up to date on infinate campus and by the time a
parent can see that there is an issue, it is many times too late to save the
quarter. Have the opportunity to have some meetings during the evening.
Daytime only meetings have totally excluded the working parent. As a working
parent, I don't feel that I have any opportunity to become involved in the life of
the school. I am closed out. Only the non-working parents have the opportunity
to become involved. PTO is even now only in the day.
13 I would like additional information sent home regarding extra-curricular activities.
How can they get involved in band for instance? My son was new in January
and I feel I have had to instigate all forms of communication. We should have
received a welcome packet for the school of some sort.
14 Assist security in patroling athletic areas to prevent stealing of student-athlete's
belongings during their practice time.
15 The Rockwood school district needs to add Science Olympiad as a school
sponsered event. The parents are taking the lead the the kids took 4th in state.
Why can't the district get behind such a positive learning opportunity? Ladue
does.
16 continued information flow from school through website campus offerings Mar 27, 2008 4:50 PM
17 Parent teacher conferences seldom provide me with more information than I can
get from Infinite Campus. When I ask specific questions about how my son can
improve his history or English papers, the only answers I get are general and
applicable to all students, not necessarily mine.
18 As a freshman parent conferences, which are rushed at best, and my child is a
great studnet, so for other parents needing more time, this would be difficult. I
was involved in freshman carnival, and my child plays a sport. This is the only
involvement I have had. I have not been contacted by any other committees or
by the school itself for help. I do like getting information from the school in
written form. Do they do counselor coffees? Is ther opportunities for classroom
interation? It does feel like their is a disconnect with the school and parents
unless it is to ask for money or votes. I understand seperating from your
highschooler, perhaps there is a way to connect parents of each grade level
together. If your child isn't in a club or sport how do you include them. Do you
offer 10 or more opportunities to be at the school each semester? I suppose if
your child were involved in many clubs?
administration/school board to a fault; without encouraging new ideas out of fear
of law suits, bad press or losing position. I believe persons have ideas but the
politics hinder the students, parents and faculty. Until a notable change occurs
in the mentality of allowing expression of ideas “openly” Eureka will still
unapproachable.
22 ENFORCE THE POLICY REGARDING INFINITE CAMPUS. The tool is great
but is of NO USE when teacher do not use it. A couple of my child's teachers
have actually told us that they do not like infinite campus and do not put
assignments, test or quizzes on the i.c. As I do this survey on March 25th, there
are two classes of my child's that have no grades for March. If the teachers are
not following the rules.........then how can you expect the students? This tool is
useless without proper involvement by staff.
23 It is very rare to see work from high school that has been scored by the teacher;
tests are generally not sent home, and this makes it hard for me to help my child
learn from what they missed. My volunteer work revolves entirely around the
band; many school organizations provide opportunities for volunteering, but the
classrooms rarely do.
24 I feel that parents should be able to sit in on a class if their child, as well as many
others, have consistenly complained about the teaching style, or lack thereof. I
have requested this option and was denied. I feel it should be available to the
parents if they are willing to take the time to do so, especially if it is a constant
issue for the student. I have also been at the school during class change and
the students are not monitored as closely as they should be. I was actually
pushed and shoved as an adult so I can only imagine how some of the students
are treated.
25 I have requested on more than one occassion to sit in on a class that my child
and many other children were having trouble with the watch the teaching style,
or lack thereof, and was denied. I feel that this should be an option for parents
to see what is going on in the classroom. You don't have to advertise it, but if a
parent is concerned enough to take the time to do this, they should be able to do
so. Many students are barely passing the same class each year, with the same
teacher and I feel this idea should be addressed.
26 parents should be able to attend after school, evening information math classes
inorder to help their student how remember the math today from our time at
school just a quick review to be able to assist or children maybe very helpful
27 Please inforce the proper guidelines for teachers to use Infinite Campus, so we
as parents know exactly how our Children are doing in each class!!!!!
28 The wait times are usually so long @ Parent/Teacher conf. that I do not get the
opportunity to visit will all of my children's teachers. If you have one child it is
hard to visit all his/her teachers. It is impossible for more than one child in high
school. An email system would be nice if improvment is needed. I check their
progress online but I usually just see their grades, not many notes are given.
29 The high school doesn't appear to want parental involvement in the schools
except for fundraising.
involvement in schools.
30 I would like to have the national Parent Teacher Association (PTA) instead of the
local yokel PTO; which enables a litany of unprofessional practices, such as the
principal handpicking the PTO president and asserting his influence as to how
PTO funds are spent. In addition to organizational benefits, the national PTA
offers a vast array of resources. More flexibility in the times PTC's are offered.
More opportunities for parent-teacher interactions. Communication strengthens
relationships. Again, the national PTA facilitates much more parent-teacher
interaction versus PTO meetings which only include the principal and parents
(occasionally one additional teacher may attend, and that is usually the Athletic
Director). Once parents and teachers are actually communicating, I'm certain
realistic suggestions/solutions will come forward.
31 to some extent, I do not think high school parents should be quite as invovled as
middle or grade school parents(preparing kids for college, where/when parents
are not typically involved,)and they should be communicating more with students
on a relatively adult level, but I would like a little more communication from
teachers and the school when there are issues (my daughter has had few) or
when there are opportunities/things not completed. I.E. my daughter (who is a
top 10 student) failed to sign up for the PSAT (she was working on an art project
during lunch that week) and it just happened that I did not recieve a news letter
that month, so I didn't know to ask her about signing up until it was too late.
There are 6 guidance counselors at Lafayette and a number of administrators
and NOONE seemed to notice that #8 wasn't signed up for the PSAT...as a
result, my daughter had no shot at National Merit.
32 Send students home with graded tests (not just the score sheet) so that I can
over questions they miss with them. When student can't get copy of test, it puts
student and parent at disadvantage.
33 The students are not allowed to keep their test, and therefore the parents cannot
see how a teacher decided on a particular grade for that student. Teachers do
not actively seek out those students doing poorly and ask what they can do to
help. Some teachers think "it can not be them (the teacher)" as to why a student
is doing less than expected. The teachers always points the finger at the
student. Luckily I have a very disciplined and hard working student who makes
good grades, but I noticed this year when the content was getting more difficult
and my child's grades were slipping and I questioned the teacher they
immediately said my child has lost focus when that is untrue since my child has
cried over test grades this year when my child studied very hard. I know these
comments do not belong in this area but I was not sure if I would be asked for
additional comments at the end or not. Thanks for providing these surveys. It
show me that you care about what the parents think.
34 Eureka does a good job with this. It would help if the support staff would at least
try to be pleasant. The secretaries and the Assistant Principal seem to think
they are better than the average person.
during each season and get the children more involved socially in their school as
well as educationally and athletically.
37 Ask teachers to send tests and major assignments home with the students so
parents can review the teacher's comments.
38 I wish there was a way to get ideas out about helping the high school students
with problems they encounter (tests in every class on the same day, giving
essay forms of a test when a child is truly sick and just returning, etc). I have
brought this up to the head principal and was told this would be brought up at
some of his teachers meetings only to never hear a thing about it again.
39 Infinite Campus is an exceptional tool for both the parents and the teachers so
that parents can be involved in their child's education. The problem is that not all
the teachers use this tool and some don't use it properly. If there is a policy by
the district that the teachers must use it and use it uniformally, then it needs to
be enforced district wide. This is a valuable tool, but if not used correctly and
accurately, it serves no purpose.
40 It is sometimes overwhelming being a freshman and a freshman parent at such a
large school. I would like to have seen more programs or events geared just to
us to make us feel more welcome and at home and so we would know where
and whom to go to with questions and concerns.
41 I would like to see more parents involved. I volunteer and it's always the same
group of parents who show up. There should be a point system that some how
gives benefits to the kids for parent involvement. I know parents have to
work...I'm a divorced mom and I work f/t up 50 hours on average.
42 You need a support group of kids with ADHD and Aspbergers Syndrome so they
can have social interaction and sports supervised.
43 Would like to hear from teachers sooner before problems arise, or when there is
a trend of non-corformance, or non-compliance
44 teachers usually keep tests and we can't see them. Also, my child had a teacher
that refused to even let the kids see the test results. I should have complained,
but everytime I have tried to get involved, the teacher takes it out on the student.
Your principles will not even talk to you about anything unless the teacher is
there.
46 Staff members should try offering parts or involvment to students who are always
not the popular ones. Staff should not just offer NHS to select students. It should
be open to all students not just the teachers favorites or who is popular with
administrators and staff. Giving kids that are different more chances to sit on
committes not just one or two out of 40 of 50 kids ( Asian, Indian, black, etc).
57 Look for ways to involve parents in clubs and after-school activities if they have
expertise in that area. Opportunities for parents to meet with the counselors
(since apparently the school makes it very difficult for the children themselves to
meet with the academic counselors, does not allow them to set up appointments,
etc.) By contrast, the Rockwood Valley counselors have regular "counselor's
corner".
58 Perhaps taking advantage of particular skills parents have in relation to their
careers and sharing that knowledge with the students.
59 I would like an evening of "attending school for a day" with an abbreviated
invidual feedback. (I think a general meeting--teachers plus parent groups would
be a better use of time...I would like general info instead of, necessarily, the
specifics of how MY child is doing.)
67 Setting pre-arranged times with parents to meet with high school counselors;
many of us are new at this!
68 my husband and i have volunteered many times and most of the time we are not
needed and they have way to many people. we usually stand around and talk to
other parents because there is really not enough work for everyone to do.
69 The only trouble we're having with the school is getting teachers to answer e-
mails quickly and getting teachers to send re-distribute homework information
sheets to the student who has misplaced these important papers.
70 Make it a requirement that all teachers post all homework and assignments to
Infinite Portal.
71 Parents are welcome in our school when volunteers are needed. However,
parent's are not welcome to give input to any aspect of what happens in the
school. Parents who have legitimate issues are not received or listened to in a
constructive way and are considered to be "trouble makers." Parents are afraid
to address specific concerns because rather than turly listening to the crux of the
issue and addressing it, the school merely takes a defensive stance, and often,
the student is subject to repercussions from the teacher/coach in question
because the parent requested help from the school administration. Therefore,
most parents refrain from addressing issues for fear of repercussion, and the
administration has a false sense of some of the areas that need to be
addressed. There is a "this is the way things have always been done"
atmosphere and new ideas for student/parent input or ideas from ouside the
building are unwelcome.
72 Progress Reports with comments / reply boxes, parent contact encouraged by
years)and counselor involvement beyond processing college applications
75 I feel therre is a "club" of parents that know what is going on, then there are the
rest of us. If you are blest with NOT having to work full time, you can join the
"club" Many of us need to fit what ever we can into our work schedule. It would
be nice if we had the opportunity to do so by: 1) BEING INFORMED ABOUT
EVENTS - NOT JUST THE SHORT-HAD VERSION FOR THOSE PARENTS -
IN THE KNOW, BUT THE DETAILS AS WELL (I have not participated in some
events because I don't know what it is all about)2) UNDERSTAND THAT FOR
THOSE THAT WORK, WE NEED TO SCHEDULE OUR TIME WELL IN
ADVANCE TO EITHER TAKE A VACATION DAY OR TO WORK SOMETHING
IN (consider setting up calendars a month in advance so we can take time off)
76 How about this- When a child gets an f in a class a parent is required to attend
that class with there child once a week till it improves. Parents will get involved
then, and the child will NOT want them there so they may put more effort into not
getting a f.
77 As a parent of junior and senior in high school, my involvement is limited - based
on THEIR preference. I was a big volunteer when they were young - felt
involved ALWAYS
78 When I served on the board the women were very clickish and snobby. Several
of the other women who I was volunteering with felt the same, yet the same
people are still there scaring off parents. Volunteering is what it is-in todays
world time is precouis and we want to do things with our kids and for the school.
But no one wants to put up with the B.S.
79 When I came onto the board I found the women to be very critical and close
minded to new ideas and change. "This is how we have been doing it for year
etc." This particular duty was my area of expertise, yet the women were did not
make me feel welcome or valuable. These particular set of women are still
involved and there fore there has been little progress made more parents
wanting to volunteer or participate. Volunteering is what it is-in today's world
time is precious & no one want to be around a bunch of gossipping clicking
women. I know I want to be more involved, but I do not want the B.S.
81 It is important for parents to have a safe environment in which to express
or my relationship with teachers and staff. My interactions with the grade level
principal (senior class) and high school principal have been outstanding, though.
82 the teachers and a frequent bases lose my child home work, there needs to be a
better way to collect and track homework. I have been in parent teacher
meetings where a teacher talkes about a missing assignment and there in his
folder is that assignment with a grade. The teacher always looks non chalant
about the discovery. I have heard this same complaint from other parents and
some of them from other rockwood H.S. This last semester we had 8 missing
assignments that the teacher had and /or returned to my child with a grade on
85 When you join the parent organization - it would be helpful to have someone call
you to welcome you and go over volunteer opportunities and receive a packet of
opportunities to be involved in. I joined in the beginning of the year and have
hear nothing.
86 not everybody has e-mail therefore I feel neglected because I prefer phone
communication. if I leave messages it's a 50/50 shot whether I receive a return
phone call or not. My retaliation is if school doesn't care neither do I.
87 PTO meetings should be held at tnight when working parents might attend. It's
interesting that when the pto group wants helpers, they hold meetings in the
evening, but if you want to have any input, you would have to attend their
daytime (9 am) meeting.
88 Schedule the parent/teacher conference more than two days in advance. A
91 At EHS the atmosphere is guided by principal and his "cronies" on the PTO-who
do exactly as he wishes. In the past 3 years or so PTO involvement has
dwindled because of a "why bother" attitude. If a parent questions how money is
being spent on something somewhat controversial (example: the electronic sign
out front) the cost if covered up-but passed by PTO later and PTO funds are
used. Another example: last year it was brought before PTO to purchase a
laminator. Much discussion at the PTO meeting about the real need for
it....Funny enough, we found out later from EHS office staff the whole was a joke
because the laminator had already been ordered and the office person saw the
invoice that very morning.
we aren't surprised by a problem too late to help correct it.
100 I am not as concerned with parent involvement as I am with overall school spirit.
MHS seems to have a Lafayette inferiority complex that won't go away. Our
students need to be proud of MHS and fill pride in the many accomplishments
the sports, drama and music..."teams" have accomplished. I would like to see
more FUN at after school events--what happened to the homecoming parade?
what about allowing the feeder elementary and middle school kids to get in free
to every football or soccer game, baseball.. and maybe one indoor event per
year--get them to MHS and get them excited about coming there! I would like to
see a student choir, band or individual sing the national anthem at MANY more
home events--good for kids to do, good for community to hear! What about a
"carnival" for the feeder schools put on by the high school students as a
fundraiser. This might cut down on the number of sweats, shirts and socks I end
up buying for the various classes, dances and sports. I think the students should
be involved in developing ways to increase the level of school spirit and
community involvement.
102 Better communication for NEW parents get new parents in on orientation day for
103 I often feel that at the high school, staff members expect students to take care of
all concerns. Aside from Ms. Mueller and Mrs. Mehrotra, I have not been
pleased with interactions through administrative and counseling departments.
104 I would like to see parent/teachers conferences focus on my child as a student
and learner. We have daily access to the grades, so I don't go to conferences to
find out what my child's grades are.
105 Would appreciate an e-mail note from teachers if there is a problem. I check
infinite capus all of the time, but sometimes grades do not indicate all behaviors
that need to be addressed. Don't be afraid to talk to the parents.
106 Enforce the Infinite Campus policy with teachers and staff. Teachers fail to keep
POLICY. They only put it in when the grade comes. We have had teachers tell
us they don't like infinite campus. Also there are teachers who do not meet the
deadline for grades; i.e. grades not posted until well after two weeks from test
date.
107 There seems to be issues with teacher/student respect. My child is feeling
intimidated from a couple of her teachers due to how the teachers are
disrepectful to the her infront of the class. However, she isn't the only one these
teachers do this to. The classroom should be an environment that a student
looks forward to learn from and not be intimidated in when asking a question and
the response from the teacher is negative and embarrasing.
108 Most of the parent involvement opportunities are brought to our attention through
extra curricular activity groups that our child is involved with. Website postings
of other opportunities would be helpful.
and see teachers in a non academic setting which I believe would bring positive
experiences to their High School careers.
112 We need to go back to getting the school's newsletter in the mail. I am
constantly downloading a 25 + pages at home.
113 Opportunities are there to take advantage of. Communication of those
opportunities at times could be a little better.
114 In foreign language we need to copies of assessments, they are never sent and
we are told they are not allowed to send. Thanks
115 Would like to see more events for students to get together up at the school -
casual, movie, dances - parents could help chaperone, etc. Proceeds to go to
the classes, or donate to a cause.
116 It would be helpful if ALL the teachers gave back the tests so the students could
use the tests to study, correct and also use as a guide to study for final exams.
This would be helpful in determining studying needs at home. Some teachers do
give them back in a timely manner and some do not give them back at all.
with any other interest. We therefore don't consider the high school as being an
ANHYWHERE where parents can access them. Only one of my sophmore
126 Some teachers do not keep the infinite campus up to date...if they expect the
127 The only opportunities for involvement are thru after school functions and sports.
I would like more involvemet in the education side of school. Also, regarding the
sporting activities, it is hard for working parents to make many of the games
because they start around 4pm. I would like the ability to attend more of my
133 I don't work full time, therefore I have time to give. With most households
maxed out already. The most they can do is encourage their child at home.
134 School does a better job of communication than individual teachers. If a child is
kept up to date. More often than not it is not for the current day. Plus it would be
nice to archive them so when we miss something we can look back.
151 Do a better job looking in on the teachers in a way that they don't know that you
are watching them. There is no way a teacher should be allowed to blow a
wistle in a childs ear. That is no way to conduct a classroom but you don't know
she does that because when you sit in on her class of course she won't do that
while you are there. It is sad too that teachers are unapproachable when the
student has questions or issues. It makes it hard for a student like mine who
wants to do good in class to approach a teacher when she has an attitude and
won't listen or help the student out when need be, which means that my child
has to go outside of class and get a tutor for extra help because the teacher
doesn't have a way of teaching that helps the kids and also she cuts kids down
in class which doesn't help the students self esteem. How sad is that!
163 There seems to be a general policy about teachers not providing the graded
tests back to the students, presumably because they don't want those in
circulation as they are re-used. The unfortunate side-effect of this is that parents
who want to review what a student missed on a test are unable to do so. This
makes it more difficult to help our kids figure out ways to better prepare for tests.
164 sometimes the administrators seem to blow off parents concerns with an
attitude: this is just policy. It seems the only way to get response is to go to CO.
165 Maybe organize chats of parents that will go to school to chat with a group of
students about professional roles in companies, or Leadership, or simply
engagement / motivation
166 Let the parents really have a say in the crazy scheduling. I feel this is being
done for a small percentage of the whole school population. Also, don't let the
students know when the drug dogs are coming. It is a real problem
167 conferences need to change- sometimes takes all night in one line to see one
teacher
168 This is actually a HUGE peeve--I cannot "review" any scored work with my highschooler
because it is never sent home and is not allowed out of the teacher's
posession. I speak specifically of TESTS which I have had numerous teachers
tell me they "cannot" give them to the students--only that that my son can "copy
down" his incorrect answers...
189 Lafayette is a great highschool and the teacher seem caring and involved.
However, for the parents of students who are bused in, very little is done to
involve parents who are so far away from the school. Distance is a barrier for
working parents.
190 I have had wonderful experiences, however, the PTO is quite political and the
way the funds are distributed is political. I prefer being involved directly with the
times that I have needed to communicate with a teacher concerning my child's
progress, I waited and then contacted the grade level principal to get clarification
194 It would be very helpful and more useful if all teachers were required to update
infinite campus at least weekly with current grades and upcoming assignments.
Also, thank you to those teachers who take the time to put a "missing" if the
assignment is missing vs. just skipping it; I find I'm constantly asking (bugging)
my child about assignments that have been turned in and just not yet graded.
Thank you to those that do, it is very helpful to stay focused.
195 Have you considered asking parents who are professionals in the workplace to
speak/field questions from specific student groups on subjects of experiential
interest? This might help to better prepare students who are about to graduate in
what to expect when entering into the real working world.
196 Faculty and staff need a complete change of attitude about parent questions
and/or concerns with regard to students. There is a widespread attitude of
defensiveness each time I contact the school with a concern/question/problem.
This attitude is reflected in the office, the teachers, the counselors and the
administrators. What a shame. So many parents deserve to be treated with
more respect! We see that the parents who set a bad example are ruining the
climate for those of us who come with respectful attitudes when looking for
solutions.
199 I think the teachers should teach and the parents should parent. I don't think a
school district can do more than Rockwood to keep our children safe. The
craziness of today's school shooting are unpredictable. I discipline is of a
200 All homework should be graded and turned back to the student in a timely
manor. The students should get a grade for doing homework and not just on
tests. Many students don't do well on tests.
201 Teachers re great. COunseling offices not so great. Many are rude and not very
helpful.
202 Provide at least SOME info to parents when a child is participating in a sport -
expectations, schedules, uniforms, etc. I also think an anual parent/counselor
meeting should be offered/scheduled to discuss schedules.
203 I'd like to see Eureka High School devote some shelf space for photo's and
trophies from the hockey team. I know it's a club sport but all its members are
Eureka kids who represent the school, including a girl. Hockey deserves the
recognition given other school sports.
204 My child is rarely permitted the opportunity to bring scored work home for review.
This is unfortunate because the parent loses the chance to help the student
identify trends that may be important for future study efforts and the without
GRADED material, the student sometimes only has ungraded work from which
to study, which naturally is inadequate. If the reason that teachers refuse to
relinquish the scored work is to prevent cheating, I recommend they create
various tests to rotate through rather than the current system which often leaves
the student little chance to benefit from the teachers' corrections.
205 I think Marquette has an active parent organization so that anyone who is
looking to participate in something should be able to find it.
206 There has to be a way to contact the teacher other then e-mail after hours.
Never know if teacheer get e-mail and how to help child having difficulty.
207 I would like to review work with my student, but most teachers don't return work
in a timely manner.
208 i feel that there are plenty of volunteer parent opportunities for those parents who
want to be involved.
209 Summer courses for English, Math, Science, History should also be available for
students who passed courses but would like to excel in their education.
210 Do not require the parent to visit in person to obtain access to Infinate Campus -
some of us work the hours school is open.
211 I will the teachers would send home a calandar sheet to help us see where they
are during there studies. This way if my student is absent, I can have him follow
the sheet to see what he has missed.
212 We would like to see the actual graded tests sent home for parents to review;
1 There is little monitoring in hallways, and many students are threatening others
on websites. Students do not like to "tattle." There is also little supervision in
halls during activities and bell times, giving students more opportunity to cause
problems for others. I never saw any hall monitor when I was in the school and I
have been there many times in different areas.
4 School should not be a meat market of pushing kids through with the primary
goal of scoring high on standardized tests in order to "look good" as a school.
School is personal and should be addressed as such. There are numberous
types of intellegence and schools today only seem to target a few. Learning
should be fun and effective. Good teachers know this and parents know who the
good teachers are because those are the only ones and the only subjects that
our children are excited enough to tell us about.
5 I feel that when my child is being picked on during class time by other students,
that the teachers don't address it or at least let me know that there is a problem.
I either find out by accident or conferences months later. Teachers are slow to
respond to phone calls, emails and inputting info in Infinite Campus!!!!
6 There have been several instances of cruel, mean remarks aimed directly at my
daughter (a high achiever but socially quiet) throughout the year. Group projects
in a couple of classes where she does not have a good friend are awkward due
to teachers letting kids pick their groups - often leaves her out.
7 Students who report bullying still feel reprisal will occur against them if they bring
the issues forward. Most choose to try to deal with them themselves. Officials
placing themselves in situations where they might observe versus direct
confrontation after an issue is surfaced might be the best way to handle.
Students might feel more comfortable bringing issues forward if they didn't fear
the action that would be taken.
8 Sports has played a big part of my children feeling accepted and learning the
value of character. The coaches have been instrumental in building bonds with
my kids at EHS.
9 We will have had three children graduate from EHS by May of 2008. We have
been very impressed with the quality of education our children have received
14 I find the administration of this school extremly racist and prejudice against
whites. The freshman hallway is crowded with african americans. i've seen
some of the blacks slapping white students on the back of the heads, tripping
white students, and screaming profanitys, while the administration does nothing
but sit and watch. My child walks through the hallways thinking the
administration is afraid to confront any of the city-kids. He's seen first hand
accounts of these city kids dealing drugs in full view of the administration. "the
problem is, there are so many kids in the hallways, the principles can't even see
whats going on." he feels it would be so easy for one of the city kids to knife
him. He's seen so many innocent people being slapped and kicked. he TRIED
telling the principles who are standing right there looking at it, but nothing has
changed. The reverse-racism in this school is the worst i've ever heard of/seen
in my life. My adivise to the administration is to quit being so unfair and to
actually DO SOMETHING.
15 I do hear that cheating is an issue among high school students. I am very
disappointed to hear that this goes on, and am especially sad to hear that some
of our top students have done this in the past. I'd like to know that efforts are
being made to stop this problem.
16 Many of these questions are marked as 2 because I don't have first hand
knowledge of the school doing any of these things. If you do, you need to inform
the parents of these programs and activities.
18 I wish there was more recognition for students who have decent grades (3.0 and
above)but aren't the 4.0+ ones. Who are active in sports, band, etc. which may
explain why they aren't 4.0+ students. They are respectful and do their job. It
just seems that only the Superstars get a lot of recognition, especially at
graduation.......
19 I must say I don't hear much about the existence of aCharacter Education
program at the high school ~ they did offer the assembly about the Colombine
girl and I thought that was awesome. Other than that I don't hear much. I'm not
sure bullying is addressed like it should be but mostly because I believe those
being bullied are afraid to speak up therefore the school can't help.
23 I feel Marquette High School is doing a great job. Mar 24, 2008 1:39 PM
24 I feel I am unable to answer several of the above questions as I am not in the
classroom. Unfortunately, my son is not very open to discussions about the
classroom, bullying, etc.
25 I based the answers on question 29-36 on information provided to parents by the
school or mentioned at home by my child. The school may be doing the above,
but as a parent I have no knowledge of it. At the same time, as a parent, it is my
responsiblity to incorporate honesty, integrity, and good character in my child.
The school should have the rules and recognitions that support what I have
taught my child and reinforce what he/she already knows. Not enough in terms
of good character is expected of the students by the school.
26 The only thing that worries me is that all parents/kids do not care about these
things. I have been in classrooms where there are students who have no
respect for their teacher....they disrupt the class and make it difficult for the
"good" kids to learn. The teachers hands are tied....they can not choose the
students in their classes.
27 The only disparaging and demeaning remarks we heard were made by my
daughter's tennis coach (but she isn't considered part of the staff).
28 The school does have Character education and recognition, but it often feels
false and I am not sure how much of it is followed up in the classroom. Most of
the class leaders are pretty good kids, but there are a few who just "appear to be
nice." My daughter has not had issues this year with bullying, etc, but she has in
the past - quite a bit freshman year. My daughter has great respect for most of
her teachers, but there are a few she has little respect for as she does not feel
they are very good teachers. She also had issues with her Junior principal who
ignored her concerns and then seemed to take a disliking to her.
29 the comments I have heard from my student and his/her friends and from other
parents is that there seems to be a double standard of discipline for the inner city
kids. The area of the school campus (which was left off the list on one question)
is the hallways. It again has to do with the inner city kids and having to get out of
their way or be pushed out of their way.
30 We started out the year at Eureka High School where my child was not happy or
doing well and switched to the ILC which has a much better learning
environment for my child. He respects his teachers and is learning better that
ever.
31 I have heard from my students that some classrooms are not well-controlled, and
some students are very disruptive and behaviour is ignored by teachers.
32 There are EHS educators I respect and appreciate for their classroom teaching. .
. there are others, that, as I've expressed to my children, have to be endured in
the pursuit of education who presumably are in a classroom to: collect a
paycheck, make life miserable for students, maintain an ego trip, destroy and
stamp out learning environments, recycle tired/tried/outdated/meaningless
worksheets, etc.
33 At times, depending on who is riding, the activity bus can feel unsafe. After
pratices/activities, as it is getting dark outside, the parking lot can seem unsafe.
34 When students are recognized they are the FAVORITES. Good character
playes a lesser role than grades which I think is wrong. They should be equal,
not everyone is capable of a 3.0 or higher but every human should take pride in
their charcter. Grades are important but being a person of integriy will get you
farther in life. The drug with in the school is a major issue that the school does
not care to address. A student said "Maybe if I start taking drugs I too could be
on Renessance" My student sees drugs in the classroom all the time and the
teachers do nothing. Bring in the drug dogs that Eureka Police have. They
would be happy to help.
35 Character Education is welcomed and most instructors/staff are excellent but
there is always room for all staff to be encouraged to continue to set good
examples both in and out of school. At school functions, especially, what the
child and their parents see teachers/staff doing is very important. Once again, I
believe Rockwood needs to personalize the child's experience by having
"inschool" assemblies to address issues such as drugs, alcohol, and sexual
disease. Educators or creative presentations from outside the school from
reputable sources (that have been pre-viewed) on these subjects can further the
good character of students. Also, when breaking into groups for assignments, I
believe that the teachers should choose groups, thereby breaking up cliques, etc.
and giving an unbiased way for students to learn to respect all students in their
classes and avoid the "being last to be picked" or "unpopular student" or not
picked at all syndrome. Let the students know ahead of time that they will all
have a chance to confidentially evaluate their groups when the projects are
finished. This gives an instructor insight as to who is working and who is not.
Also, perhaps juniors and seniors are mature enough to fill out confidential
evaluations of teachers each semester. There would be no names assigned on
the evaluations and when they are filled out, another instructor would be in the
classroom and collect them. This would assure that the student's identity is
anonymous. They will be doing this in college and it is important that they learn
to recognize what styles help them to learn and also what teaching
habits/styles/classroom and course expectations, etc. may be keeping them from
learning.
36 My child has been bullied in school and threatened after school. When the issue
was taken to the grade level principal, my child and the bullies were brought in
for questioning. The bullies denied the actions that my child said they did. The
bullies were not punished because their word was taken above my child's. We
are now in the process of working with the grade level principal, the discipline
principal, and the counselor to resolve the issue and prepare for future incidents.
We hope to resolve the situation in a way that prevents future bullying.
37 AS a parent volunteer and as a parent active in my student's athletic activities
after school, I find the lack of security at the school very disturbing. Any time,
any day, anyone could walk into the school with explosives or weapons, and no
one would no it. There are multiple doors open, even in the evening, which give
access to the inside of the school. Wake up people!!! Protect the students and
staff. Come up with some type of security to protect the innocent.
38 I think there are many teachers that do not respect and take in to consideration
students suggestions. There are several teachers that do do this, but I think
there need to be more.
39 Some questions I cannot answer because I'm not in the school to observe.
There are a small handful of teachers that are disrespectful to the students and
don't seem to have their academic success as a priority - it's just a job!
40 I feel that children with low C to D averages and that have difficulty
comprehending and retaining information should be looked at a little more
closely as far as what programs or help could benefit them.
41 We admire and adore the music and band depratment . Ms. Fay is amazing as
well as encouraging to my daughter. Ms. Stephenson teaching methods have
been difficult for our child to grasp.
42 My son says there are kids passing drugs in the bathrooms during passing
periods on any given day.
43 Love the school. The only physical improvement I would recommend is fixing up
the "u" drop off. it is conjested and dirty. this is the area most kids use and it's a
mess. i rarely go thru the front door, but when i've needed help i find the
welcome center staff rude and looking "bothered" to help. the individual principal
and her admin asst, however, are incredible. they are open, warm, encouraging
and genuine. they work countless hours and never seem to waiver in their
desire to help. Ms. Trotier is a wonderful administrator!
44 I recently sold tickets during lunch and was shocked at the inappropriate
behavior that goes uncorrected. Pants worn down between the knee's, blouses
exposing midriffs, dozens of trays just left on the lunch tables by students,
hugging and kissing by couples, and cursing as kids passed by my table. It
seemed like a scene out of a movie, not my childs high school cafeteria.
45 Not all student opinions are heard, and felt to make a difference, therefore not
expressed. It seems the views of a few are carried forward for everyone. There
appears to be a mood of preferentail treatment for some without listening/hearing
the views of all.
46 This year my child likes his teachers, in the past that has not been the case. He
had a spanish teacher that all she did was yell at them and tell them they were
stupid. I assume other parents complained and one day the principle came in to
audit the class. Of course the teacher was nice that day. What did they expect?
This goes back to not be able to communicate with the school about problems
because the teacher knows what parent it is and takes it out on the child. I have
another child that graduated from Lafayette and we had the same problems
then. The principles and staff need to recognize problem teachers and do
something about them. Right now I have no faith in anything I tell the school will
be listened to or dealt with.
47 I understand that it is impossible to eliminate ALL disparaging remarks and
bullying behaviors, especially since many times these things happen away from
the eyes and ears of adults. Sometimes the perpertrators do not even realize
that is what they are doing. My child has never felt physically threatened. The
drinking incident I'm aware of involved a student stating there was alcohol in her
water bottle and acting in a manner to support its presence. Whether she was
acting out or there really was alcohol, I couldn't say. My child, however, believed
it to be true.
population of kids using illegal substances in our area schools. I do not blame
50 students have reported that their lunch password is not alsways secure and can
be accessed by others. students have also reported theft at the school/
Mar 17, 2008 10:18 PM
51 The disparaging and demeaning remarks are from the varsity soccer coach. Mar 17, 2008 9:28 PM
52 It needs to act rather than worry about press releases or win loss records. Mar 17, 2008 4:59 PM
53 I think teachers have many students and great pressures to ensure curriculum
items are covered and the respect from teacher to student is often not as it
should be. I think students are not "heard" or "trusted" or treated with respect by
teachers. Granted, the climate with such a majority of students feeling entitled
makes things difficult; and there are GREAT teachers, certainly my child has a
few each year. But the majority do not REALLY listen to students. It has been
my experience that for the average student, it is difficult to navigate at LHS and it
is difficult to be heard with the staff at ANY level. Staff does seem to rarely trust
the average student. It is disheartening. It is a subject spoken often in many
situations, in many circles of LHS parents.
54 Lafayette High has a very lackadaisical attitude towards drugs on their campus.
They make a severely poor token effort to uncover drugs. They accept the fact
there are drugs there and basically do nothing to discourage or combat them.
That is very poor.
55 There is a significant amount of cheating done by the Parents for their children
(homework and projects completed by the parents for their child). I suppose it is
difficult for the school/teachers to know of this but, if they do, they should do
something about it. The parents should be brought in and told that if it continues
their child will be penalized for the parent's behavior.
56 For the most part RW Summit is good schools IF YOUR CHILD DOES WELL
ACADEMICALY, which all of mine do. However, I've students of friends of mine
that are basically ignored in the classroom if they are not above average
students. It's as if the under-average student is not worth the teacher’s time or
it's too difficult to find a learning style to help the student succeed. Our problem
is the lack of oversight towards the fine arts teachers. Serious enough to be
called financial miss-management and very little is appearing to be done.
57 I believe the Administration and staff at LHS are confused about making things
"equal". Our experience has been "overkill" in some areas, and lack of attention
in others. Cheating was addressed with my 4.0 student in front of the entire
Spanish Class. She was humiliated, accused wrongly by her teacher in front of
everyone within the first week of school. She also was in the girls bathroom the
first week of school, and a mirror was slid under the door to look at her by the girl
in the next stall. This same child has been bullied by a black student. She was
walking down the hall by herself and a black boy came up and hit her hard in the
back of the head for no reason. I informed the school, but have not been notified
of how the situation was handled. Was told that they would look at the cameras,
and they have talked with my daughter, but I have NEVER received a follow up
call to let me know ANYTHING. Ironically, a month later, my son was
reprimanded for bullying a fellow student (white) in his Spanish class. They were
playing a game of tossing a ball to each other and saying something in Spanish.
He tossed a ball to a kid who refuses to talk in class (this child apparently has
ongoing issues, unaware to my child that he had an IEP, etc.), who was
"participating" in the event. The teacher accused him of bullying the child, was
sent to the principal for a detention. (????) There is a Black Student Union at
LHS, which white children may join, but a White Student Union is not allowed.
Administration will listen to the concerns of white students, but will not allow a
White Student Union. The confusion for my children is that celebrating being
Black is allowed and encouraged, while celebrating being White is not.
Repeatedly my children experience the "over kill" in accommodating "special
needs" groups or interests. The same experience came to me when attending
Parent Teacher Conferences. A black couple in front of me walking down the
hall received all kinds of thanks for coming, etc. and attention from two
principals, yet, when I walked by didn't say a thing or show me the same kind of
"interest". The unintended message was very clear. I then spoke to them, and
they were very responsive and cordial ~ yet ~ their focus was on making the
black couple feel welcome and support them. They didn't need to "worry" about
me, I guess. It's a struggle for all involved. Our family welcomes the inner-city
kids and those with special needs ~ however, we want equality when it comes to
ALL at LHS. Not just attention to Special Interest Groups. Thank you.
58 My child along with others from 1st semester would complain about a math
teacher. They were not giving or teaching enough examples to really help
students to learn as well as they would have liked. I went to confrences and I
had to agree with my child. This teacher was lacking in teaching skills. I hope
over time he will get better. My son is a work hard and wants to be an A student
but when the right teacher is not doing all that they can grades suffer.
60 Your staff does not address issues of conduct in the cafeteria. Not following
school rules of conduct is unacceptable, no matter who that person is. Your staff
is afraid to confront these issues. I have experienced it once, and heard multiple
stories of misconduct. Kids taking other kids drinks, or food. They report it to a
monitor, who tries to discourage the student from pursuing it. I am not
impressed with the lack of a consistent disciplinary program at Summit. I am also
not impressed with a couple of your teachers that are lacking in the self control
necessary to be considered a "teacher". I have heard of several students that
have complained about these teachers, only to be told that they are aware of it.
The fact that you aware of it, but allow them to continue without being evaluated
for upholding the school's standard for teachers, is ridiculous.
respect and interest. I question the school's commitment to character when
they have been so obstructionist to the Amnesty International club, which is
trying to promote students thinking about moral issues in the world.
62 Since my son has been recognized as a leader I am not aware of any specific
problems. Fortunately he has a good relationship with his teachers. I feel it is up
to him to be respectful in order to be treated likewise.
63 My child was recently listed on a "hit list" of kids that 6 kids had drafted of kids
they wanted to kill. The list was lengthy and shown to my child who then tried to
talk that kid out of his "plans". He was upset and my husband and I were
beyond upset! We didn't even want to let him attend school we were so afraid
for his safety. It was a very stressful situation and one we should not have to
deal with.
64 my childs name recently appeared on a hit list of people this student wanted to
die and we only heard about it through others at school. The staff had already
issued only 3 days of ISS and never informed us about this safety issue that
greatly affected my daughter. My husband had to call school and talk to the
principal or we would have never been informed. This needs to be addressed!
The privacy of the student whom is punished for the "hit list" should no longer be
the concern but the safety and parent awareness of their children whom are
being threatened should come first!
65 There are some teachers that I feel disrespect the students. Specific example,
giving a timed writing assignment and cutting the time short by 5 minutes, giving
the student a "D", which is 1/3 of the quarter grade, and telling the student it
would have been an "A" paper had it been finished(this is an AP class) student
takes grades seriously and sets goals and paces himself on time aloted.
66 More emphasis should be given on how to train every individual student's
transitioin from middle school to high school. More help from the school,
teachers, and parents is needed on this aspect. The techniques that are needed
are time organization, study skills, critical thinking, and so on. Kids are
overwhelemed during the first year in high school since things are so different:
work load is higher, requirements are higher.
most experienced teachers. Student teachers should be helpers.
70 I have no knowledge of the quality or amount of time spent on these issues at
our school.
71 Bullying in the hallways is a problem. It is almost what I would call a "silent" type
of bullying...a push or shove, calling of names as soon as the hall monitor looks
away. It is an ongoing problem everywhere. I honestly have not heard or seen
character education at LHS, but I am sure that it is present. Most teachers seem
to respect students. My child respects his teachers and reports that students are
respectful and learning in the classrooms.
72 my child was bullied several weeks. the school didn't do a thing about it. we
were upset that the school gave the bully the rights!!!!
73 3.3 GPA but not on list for Renissance breakfast sent back to classroom.
Disappointed. A lot of talk about drugs and selling prices. Has seen pot pulled
out in classroom before. My son keeps to himself at school because he says
there is a lot of bad talk and drug talk and what some do for fun outside of school
seems to be trouble. He is just there to get a good education and concentrate on
his grades. We like the school, teachers, and education very much. The students
seem to be the only problem which I am sure is very hard to control.
74 Marquette High is a great school over all, but I feel the school spirit lacks. Great
academics but flat in club activities that my children have participated in.
75 My student talks about fights that happen on a daily basis at school. This is not
acceptable or comfortable for me and obviously isn't for my student or they
would not bring it up so often. This is a concern.
76 I think lip service is given to character issues. It is spoken about and taught in a
way one would address elementary school students an it is tuned out by high
school students.
77 The parking lot lighting is very poor. Many of the fixtures are not illuminated.
(burned-out or missing bulbs) This is a very unsafe / dangerous situation from
both personal and vehicular concerns.
78 Great communication from school. Successful students have parents that are
involved. Understand that this is not possible for all parents. No school and no
location is safe anymore.
79 Cheating is tolerated at Lafayette and no action is taken when cheating is
reported. I guess by allowing it, grade point averages are higher making the
school look good!
80 I am VERY dissapointed with the attitudes of your teachers regarding their
disciplinary decisions on several matters regarding my sons. Very closed
minded!
81 My child's teacher said she was misplaced in an AP class which my child was
upset about because she has been in an advanced class in thet subject all
through middle school.
82 My daughter attended a private school before now. So she does not feel safe
because of the lack of respect, morals, values of such a larger volumn of kids.
The ones that create problems are those kids REALLY delt with? My daughter
said finally the other day someone got written up so then what??
THE WAY THROUGH ROCKWOOD, KEHRS
MILL,CRESTVIEW,MARQUETTE. I HAVE WORKED AT THE SCHOOL
(VOLUNTEER) THE LAST 6 YEARS. I DO NOT FEEL IT IS A WARM
SCHOOL. THE OFFICE HELP IN THE MAIN OFFICE CAN BE VERY RUDE
AND THE COUNCELING OFFICE HELP CAN ALSO BE VERY RUID TO
PARENTS AND KIDS. YOU SHOULD FEEL WELCOME AT THESE OFFICES.
I HAVE HAD BAD TEACHERS WITH BOTH KIDS. NON RESPONSE EMAILS
AND ONE TEACHER COULD NOT SPEAK ENGLISH VERY CLEARLY. I
HAVE HAD TEACHERS PICK ON KIDS. BELITTLE.I WILL BE GLAD WHEN
ALL MY KIDS ARE OUT OF MARQUETTE. NOT WORTH COMPLAINING DO
NOT GET ANYWHERE.
85 Questions 29 - 37 were given 3s because I am not physically at the school
everyday to withness any of these. I know that students are smart and many of
the administration do not know when kids are being made fun of or picked on or
rumors spread about them. When an issue was addressed it was taken care of.
Some teachers are respected more than others by the students.
86 My only concern in the area of safety is that my child has had several items: 2
graphing calculators and a cell phone and ipod stolen. there is not enough
supervision and/or locker space in the locker rooms for personal belongings of
students. I am not the only parent who perceives this. With this being the age of
technology and students having these items, there must be a way to provide
students with a locker so that they are not victims of theft. When this was
reported to the administration we were told it was our child's fault and the
cameras didn't show who took the items.
87 I have longed for for a year long "Diversity" class to be offered. We are not
teaching our young men and women how to conduct themselves and respects
others of all colors, age and handicaps. That's why now Corporations are
spending millions of dollars for Diversity classes. To teach our children what
they should have been taught in school-how to live in peace and accept one
another. To tell me "Oh we offer a lecture" or have someone come in and talk
about their experiences is not enough. That's like saying well he/she took a
math lecture and that is all the skills they will need to survive in an ever changing
and even more diverse society. And to be honest with you we should be
teaching these classes from elementary thru high school. I challenge
Rockwood Summit to "step out" of the box for once and begin setting a higher
standard of education for our children that others schools will follow. That
Rockwood blazes a new path and actually prepares our children on something
so simple as how to live and respect others, all of which we know is so
desperately needed just by watching the news and reading the newspapers.
88 I don't need you/Rockwood to teach my child character. That is something she
has learned by watching me. If she were in search of role models, some of the
science teachers would be good role models while many of the girls sports
coaches at Marquette (particularly in basketball) would be rotten ones.
89 My biggest issue with the high school is the amount of personal property thefts.
It has gotten so bad that my child can't even take a calculator to school for a test
without the fear of it being stolen. Which has happened to us more than once
this year and ironically the school recommended calculator for certain classes is
no less than $125. Conveniently there are not enough cameras in the school to
help prevent/discourage this behavior. My child has also had an iPod stolen this
year from an area within the school that was covered by cameras, but the
camera pan rather than remain stationary to catch such issues. Bullying at our
school has not been an issue to my knowledge, the school does an excellent job
of discouraging this behavior, however, if my child was a victim, the panning
cameras would NEVER catch it. Just like the ones on the exterior of the school
than don't stop the car break-ins. Dr. Larson indicated during a Bond Issue
presentation recently that more cameras will be purchased this year...whatever
the number, THEFTS and STATIONARY need to come up in that conversation.
Thefts are a personal violation and the culprits need to be punished....where are
their parents??? Do they not notice this equipment in their homes that they
didn't purchase?? What child has $250 lying around to purchase an iPod or the
$150 calculator? Come on...wise up.
90 My daughter was threatened online by another student. She talked to the
principal and he talked to the girl and her friends. That was handled very good.
I do have a problem with the district policy regarding fighting. If this girl attacks
my daughter all she can do is run, yell and try to ward off the punches and kicks
from the offender. If she tries to defend herself and throws a punch or kicks
back she is given the same punishment and the girs who started the fight. One
of our Constitutional Rights given to us in this country is to defend ourselves.
This right is taken away by the school district. I believe this policy needs to be
reviewed and changed. All of us should be able to defend ourselves if attacked,
and sometimes that requires fighting back. Believe my I am not nor have I ever
been a fighter. I believe the best way is to avoid conflict. My children have been
taught this philosophy, but they have also been told if they have no other options
they have the right to defend themselves. If a conflict does arise at school and
my daughter has no other options than to defend herself and she is punished by
the school for that action then I would have no option other than to defend my
daughter by whatever means I could.
91 Feedback from our kids tells us that bullying, exclusion, etc. happens in the
hallways between classes. While many teachers are caring and involved, some
teachers show little regard for the students. We have experienced teachers who
are more interested in the sport they're coaching than in providing a stimulating,
well-structured learning environment. That has been the most disappointing part
of our experience at EHS.
92 There was a day when threats against the school were written on the bathroom
wall. The school did notify parents, but the threat seemed scary enough to keep
our son out. He thought it was just kids wanting to miss class for that day. It's
hard to second guess that, though.
93 My primary concern is the availability of drugs and the overwhelming prevalence
of use in the high school. My children tell me that all they hear in the halls and in
class is talk about drugs. Numerous lifelong friends of my children are regularly
using drugs. I confronted a known dealer and threatened to call the police, his
parents and the school. He said that he didn't want the principal to "rain on his
parade". The arrogance was unbelievable. According to my children there are
about 6 dealers at the school and they have for sale pot, pills, heroine,
mushrooms, cocaine, etc. Two families from the school that we know very well
have children that have been in rehab and every time they return to Summit they
are overwhelmed by the drug culture there. One left the school because his
94 with the bulling subject. The adminastrators always have the bullies write what
they think happened and then the victem write his/her's. the bullies always have
the same thing. On a rare occasion there is a witness that writes the same as the
victem, that is the only way the school will get involved. The distract needs to
undertsatnd ( as ms.sambussy spelling?) stated that by grade 4 that the bullies
and most kids know that if they stick to a basic story, they will not be punished as
nothing can be proved. when the next Megan Myers happens I hope its not at a
rockwood school, because the parent out pouring will be .... well the admin will
not like the communities response. Most parents are afraid to speak up about
these things as they are afraid it will hurt there childs popularity. and believe me,
you that happens every day,.There is one boy at our school that is harasted
often and his parents have been out cast by the other parents and its because
they stand up for there rights. The parents of the children that do the bulling (
most in advance classes and GPA in the high 3.7 to 4,3 range) parents are so
into there selfs that they are my little child could never do that. and if an outsider
parent tells these parents what the have seen, well then they are outcast also.
95 Counselors and teachers need to stay in better touch with parents if missing
assignments, zeros, low D's or F's. Some teachers are great others you have to
chase. This is their full time to teach & keep parents informed how to help
students improve. Offer more after school training to keep from falling behind.
96 we did have an issue regarding something that was said that was very
distressing and the principal took care of it immediatly and did it with respect to
all parties involved. She was excellent in listening and had a approach that
helped our student
97 I contacted my sons' counselor about bullying and it was resolved privately and
to our satisfaction.
98 my child has commented on the heating that goes on constantly. She is actually
looked down upon for not participating in it.
99 Have very little idea what the school does in terms of "character" education or
organized efforts to combat bullying or teasing. However, I have no indication
that my child has been harassed or bullied.
100 see prior. My ranking on welcoming is really my own encounters when running
around the track or outer sidewalk nightly. Plenty of brats. It's just a sign of the
times.
101 My answers indicate perhaps that I am dissatisfied with my daughter's school.
My daughter is one who is not interested in learning at all, does not find it
relevant, does not have goals, refuses to discuss responsibility issues with us
and therefore, renders much of the school's good efforts to no avail.
102 Our children have had a very positive experience over the lasts 8 years at
Eureka High School and have received an excellent education. I have however
experienced an attitude from the current and previous Principal that is less than
responsive to voiced parent concern or comments. As a taxpayer, I believe
parents and their children are the customers and should be treated as such. The
school works for us. I have only had two experiences with Eureka principals
over the duration of 8 years and both were parent initiated. Both times I have
experienced an attitude and response that communicates that the school makes
decisions apart from parent concerns or voiced desires for their student. I hope
to see a change in this for future parents/students at Eureka High School.
103 It is my understanding from my child that a high percentage of children in AP
classes cheat on a regular basis.
105 After volunteering at school this past week and being in the common area during
lunch, I saw kids outside-totally unsupervised banging themselves against the
glass doors. Shocked at the amount of noise it made, and that the glass did not
break. Even with the commotion, no one (staff) ever went into that area to check
on those kids having lunch outside.
106 I feel the students in this quadrant are very disrespectful of property and people.
The students are too empowered at a young age. I'm not advocating rigid
discipline, but I feel they need to be more respectful.
107 Front office staff is not friendly and often appears annoyed at requests of
parents.
108 Athletic Departments need much work. Too much nepotism and favorites
(coach's and teacher's children as starters) especially in soccer and basketball.
109 cheating seems to be rampant. my child does not cheat, and complains that
others that do are getting better grades.
110 Too much emphasis on character education. Takes too much time away from
learning.
111 LETS BE HONEST! WHEN YOU HAVE CLASSROOMS AND HALLWAYS FULL
OF KIDS WITH THEIR PANTS HALF FALLING OFF AND THE CURSING I
HAVE HEARD ,AND STOOD UP TO, WHEN I AM IN THE HALLS FOR
WHATEVER REASON,THERE IS NOT A GOOD LEARNING ATMOSPHERE.
112 I have trust in the administration that they would handle any safety issues in an
appropriate manner
113 Marquette has been a strong school from an academic standpoint but the lack of
community feeling is a concern. My daughter has had tremendous success as a
scholar but feels no emotional connection to the school. She has had some
teachers who have taken a strong personal interest in her but has also had
several teachers who never bothered to learn her name. Her main feeling of
"belonging" at Marquette came from her involvement in the field hockey
program. The team spirit and strong friendships that she developed with her
field hockey teammates were an important factor in her life. Unfortunately, she
was cut from the team her senior year. Her one important tie to Marquette was
eliminated. Although my husband and I believe that adversity builds character, it
has been painful to see how this wonderful young woman's experience at
Marquette has been, for the most part, impersonal and isolating. The
newsletters and open house speeches continually emphasize the academic side
of Marquette. I'd like you to consider a policy against cutting seniors from
varsity sports (especially if they have played for three years) unless there is a
problem with attitude or behavior.
Barb Spieler
114 Please stop using the propaganda film "An Inconvenient Truth" is every
discipline (i.e Spanish, History, etc.) to attempt to indoctrinate the students.
115 I feel there are times when the school is actually over policed. There were a
couple instances that my child was punished due to a teacher making a mistake
or over reacting and punishment is given that does not fit the incident or is
handed down because it says so on a so called page in the handbook that a
child is supposed to have memorized from cover to cover. Administrators should
look at things by case by case basis. I have only felt I was listened to by school
counselors.
116 Some of these questions are not applicable to high school, but are more for a
grade school or middle school environment. Therefore I wonder if there are
some questions that are more geared to high school that were not addressed.
My child is very self motivated and responsible and this works well with the many
opportunities and excellent curriculum that Summit has to offer. I feel for her,
she is getting a very college prep. education. The opportunities offered at the
school in academic and extra curricular at the high school are wonderful and
offer a lot of diversity of interests.
117 This survey should have included a box to mark "don't know". For example, how
would I know the answer to #34?
118 Prescription drug use is a problem. my student reports thoses drugs are being
sold at school during school areas. My student is afraid to name those involved.
their potential harm in the student's future.....
122 I am not sure that I truly know the true extent that character is addressed during
school. It is expected for all students to be honest and kind. BUT I am also not
a fan of teachers spending an inordinate amount of time on this subject. Please
teach my kids. I will be in charge of their character development, moral compass
and aility to deal with "mean" people. YOur job is to teach academics.
123 we know cheating happens but is not ever caught. I hate the fact that Summer
school was moved around this year and no parental involvement was asked forwhy
it affects all of us.
problem. Often, following the "rules" is more important than meeting the needs
of students.
125 My student has told teachers of cheating from other students and on three
separate occasions, one teacher addressed the situation the other two teachers
did not address the issue with us as parents, as to how the information from our
child was handled.
126 Comments made by teachers to students are not always encouraging to good
character education. I have heard remarks similar to "live life to the fullest and
do whatever you want." These kind of remarks are not conducive to mature
behavior.
127 I have been unable to be very active in my child's school/education at this time
because of personal circumstances. I only know what my child brings home to
me. I know my child really desires to finish his high school education at
Marquette and I know that he desires to continue his education with a college
degree.
128 I gave you a 1 (one) for number 34 due to the incredible chasm between the way
the desegregation kids are treated as opposed to the district kids. More than one
student at Marquette has told me very troubling stories about how the teachers
"treat the deseg kids special" and "are afraid to punish them because they'll get
in trouble and be called racists". I am very troubled by what Marquette is
teaching my child about race relations. The deseg policy is actually promoting
the stereotype of black kids being stupid and lazy and disrespectful, and that's
incredibly unfair to ALL the students. Again, according to the stories students
have told me (not just my child), the expectations for climate and character of the
deseg students is much lower than the district kids. I do not pretend to have all
the answers. I am simply seeing a problem. My child never spoke in terms of
"black" and "white" before attending Marquette. And the interesting thing is that
she speaks of "blackness" not as a skin tone, but as a set of mannerisms. I ask
her about her black friends from the county, and she says "oh, they're not black
like the city kids". So on top of leading my child through the temptations of youth,
we are also battling the derogatory race relations she sees at school. I am not in
any way convinced that mixing students from the city and county, as it's currently
employed, is beneficial to either side.
129 The bullying is more from the intimidation from the teacher to the students. The
student asks questions and the teacher insults the student in front of the class
which makes the student not want to ask questions. Therefore, doesn't get all
the informations he/she requires for fear of looking "stupid".
130 Hallways are crowded, many students block the hallways during passing time
My student has never used his locker for fear of being late to class because halls
are too crowded to get from class to class. Students run into other students at
their lockers or make remarks to those asking them to move. My son is afraid of
the hallway because students congregate.
131 Please note that my child is a very independent and self motivated Junior. I am
not sure that I really know the answers to some of these questions, such as #31,
32, 34 etc.
132 I believe at Summit they have provided a wonderful atmosphere. Are there some
issues? Sure, there are everywhere but I feel they are addressed in a
quick/efficient manner. I have nothing but good words for the experience that
both of my children have been involved with. Keep up the great work.
133 Sports coaches have had a great impact on the value of good character -
specifically, Baseball, Basketball, and football
134 I feel the bussing in of students from outside our district is strictly for money
purposes,my child says their disruptive in class and the teachers do nothing !
135 Not having math tests sent home for review is very frustrating. It is difficult to
help a student if you don't know where they are struggling.
136 I did not rate questions that I do not feel I have had any comments or complaints
from my child
137 All disparaging remarks have been from one teacher. We have no recourse. If
we address it, then my child will face repercussions for the remainder of the
year. The teacher utilizes sarcasm and insults instead of constructive instruction.
She attacks self esteem instead of encouraging the child to be their personal
best.
138 I do not agree with half days for attendance purposes but movies watched in
class to fill the time.
139 There are some issues that faculty will not listen to students on reasoning. Only
one way decisions. Parents are not involved, only notified.
140 My wife and I feel that some of our teachers may have lower expectations for
colleges than we do. He is often told that a B is a good grade when we are
pushing him for honor roll status to keep his college options open.
141 I don't like the Character Education program. It is my job and responsiblity as a
parent to teach these things to my child, not yours. I think it is ridiculous to
recognize kids for doing what they ought to do anyway. Instead, stop catering to
the kids who are constantly in trouble. Punish them appropriately and spend my
tax dollars more wisely. You use up too much academic time for the character
education program.
142 Since I am not at school every day with my cild, I am unable to answer many of
these questions regarding character. My son is a senior and he doesn't really
discuss this with us. I know that when our children were in elementary school,
character education was stressed every day.
144 I think the current system of notifying parents of emergency and/or important
situations and events is terrible. The phone call and text messaging system is
far from sufficient. I recently learned about a company named Purple Tree
Technologies and they have a much superior product and system to anything
Rockwoods has. I know the University of Missouri - Columbia is instituting their
system as well as Stephens College. Please investigate the company.
145 Discipline is consistently inconsistent, one kid will get 3 days ISS for 2nd
infraction of cell phone, another will get a saturday for a 3rd infraction of cell
phone. The kids are aware of this, and they have lost a great deal of respect for
administrative authority. Students believe if you excell in academic or sports you
aren't held to the dame disciplinary standards because of this
146 Drug sold within school needs attention badly. My son says it is anything you
want you can get there.
147 I'm really not aware of what type of "good character" instruction is included in the
classroom. I'm also uncomfortable with the extent of "character" training that
should be in a public school, as I won't have any control over the content.
Parents views on "character" are going to be more conservative than educators
who are by and large more liberal than the general population.
148 There is no dress code! Girls have tops on with too much clevage and breast
showing and some skirts are too short. Some guys having to walk with their hand
in their front pocket to keep their pants from falling down. Seeing buys
underwear and girls bras is not appropriate in any educational setting. I
complained about one girl who had a push up and together bra with a low cut
shirt that I was shocked she was allowed to wear it in school up to that point. I
wish the administration/faculty/staff wasn't so fearful about confronting some of
these kids about their dress. Perhaps events had taken place where they have
and were confronted by angry parents who see nothing wrong with their 16 yo
daughter showing off her cleavage. I think I will invite BOE members for lunch
when the weather warms up so they can see first hand what is allowed at MHS.
When there were the threats last year about killing people at MHS I was shocked
that on the day these events were to occur I did not see classroom doors locked
and paper covering the windows on the doors during classes. Nor did I see
additional police presence in the building. One day there were drug sniffing dogs
going through the student parking lot, resulting in some students being taken
away. Yet, these dogs and their handlers were not allowed in the building to
continue to sniff out drugs in lockers and throughout the building. Guess it
wouldn't look good for Rockwood if there was a large amount of drugs found in a
prestigious west county school. Send a message! Drugs will not be tolerated
in our schools. We will do what we need to to eradicate drugs and those who
use/sell them from our learning environment. It really is simple if it is a priority.
Overall, I see the culture and moral compass of the school being student driven
rather than district driven. escpeically in a HS setting where hormones I
believe that administration and teachers are afraid to confront a student about
their dress for fear of parental retaliation. There does not appear to be anyone
with the strength of conviction to do what is right and actually tell some students
what they're wearing is inappropriate.
149 My child is a good (college bound) student, but school is "just something I have
to get through" to get to do what I want to do. What is offered does not match
her interests. Perhaps students need to be listed to more to understand what
they are looking for---rather than on relying on what "has always been."
150 At the risk of just sound prejudiced, most of the violence & rudeness problems
are due to the kids that are bussed in. I'm told that they walk down the hallways
like they own them. You better get out of their way or they will literally knock you
down.
152 The hallways at EHS are a dangerous place for any student who is a target for
bullies. Shoving, name calling, threatening actions are left unchecked. Students
seem to feel unsupervised during these times.
153 My sophomore girl feels safe at school, but I worry when she stays late for
activities and has to walk to the back of the parking lot. Especially at night.
154 The staff at Lafayette is a caring hard working staff. I have put 3 boys thru
Lafayette. My oldest son graduated Mizzou with honors and the middle son is in
his junior year in the engineering program. Without the base thay my boys
received at Lafayette this would not be possible. From a grateful parent thank
you for all that you do!!!
155 When my child does not turn in an assignment or has an issue in the classroom,
I would like a phone call from the teacher that same day. I feel like I don't know
when there is a problem with my child until too late. If I were to be given
information immediately, perhaps I could help to prevent a problem. I also feel
that some teachers don't post grades to Infinite Campus in a timely manner.
Does someone keep track of that?
156 Unfortunately, I just talked with a parent 2 days ago who said she could not wait
for her daughter to graduate! She couldn't wait to be DONE with RSHS. She
barked that because other children had so ridiculed her (overweight) daughter
over the years that she (daughter) has no "school spirit" and has no desire to
participate in any RSHS activities! She said her daughter is now comfortable
with being "INVISIBLE!" I was appalled to say the least. Kids are kids and they
unfortunately poke fun of the overweight, but when I told my daughter (a jr.)
these things, she said, "No, Mom, there are lots of people who are overweight
who are smart, fun to be around and are well-liked! And who participate in school
activities." That's why parents have to encourage at home! Mothers have to
initiate and help their daughters/sons become young ladies/ young men. The
responsibility is not RSHS. Character building begins AT HOME.
157 when children are bullied at school and someone complains it should be
addressed immediately and parents and children should be involved from "day
one". Even at high school level.
158 Once again, the violence level and culture clash does nothing to help your
situation. I am seriously investigating moving my freshman student to a different
school and will not let my younger ones attend Lafayette. STOP THE BUSSING.
GET TOUGH WITH THESE KIDS. My daughter says the city kids are
disrespectful to the teachers and create a hostile environment.
159 Too many teachers use videos to babysit the students instead of teaching them.
Too many students are allowed to sleep in class. There's a lot of disruptions in
class that are not dealt with. I think you have a lot of lazy immature teachers.
160 Rockwood Summit has a serious drug and alcohol problem (not to mention
someof it started in the middle school, and includes these kids being sexually
active) Instead of sweeping under the rug we parents want to put a stop. Its all
the kids, mainly the ones that you would not suspect. Kids are growing up too
fast, primarily becasue of peer pressure.Sad to say some of the parents are
encouraging this, if the school could bring in "real people" to talk to the kids and
make them aware of the "what if's" may be able to help some before it is too late.
Too many have died or are headed down the wrong path -- maybe some focus
should be on them or have their paretns come and speak. Kids don't understand
that they aer breaking the law...but "everybody's doing it is the attitude and we
Thanks for all you do at Lafayette!
164 I don't feel it is the responsibility of the school to promote/teach character traits.
The parents need to take that responsibility. School is for academics, in my
opinion
165 Can't answer accurately many of these questions since parents do not attend the
school to make these judgements.
166 My daughter was a victim of bullying in the hallways at school, and was brought
into the office for an interview at the beginning of the school year. The bullying
did not cease, and later extended to "stealth" cyber-bullying on MySpace or
Facebook. It wasn't until she correctly identified the original source to another
student that was "put up" to it that the bullying finally ceased. Verbal bullying
needs to be dealt with effectively so it does not escalate and stops. Not sure
what to do about cyber-bullying, but much of that seeps into bullying on school
grounds.
167 My daughter went through some bullying problems last year. I was not
completely satisfied with how it was handled. She has not complained this year,
so I assume things are OK.
168 Informational meetings on how to recognize drug or alcohol use and depression
would be good topics for parent meeting.
169 minor everyday discipline problems are handled differently for white students
than for black students. white students would be in alot of trouble if they said or
did anything that could even remotely be considered racial, but when black
students do it, staff ignores them.
170 Very happy at school and my children feel safe there. Only incident I was aware
of was a drug deal in the bathroom after school...this involved a city student
selling marijuana---Not sure of policy on overall monitoring of halls etc for
safety...
wrestling staff.
172 I feel that teachers/adminstration treat students that perform well on tests and in
the classroom better even when they are the students that are bullying others by
acting like they are better because of their performance. I feel this is especially
true with Mean Girls, I do not see teachers dealing with the bullying and name
calling girls do to each other. I feel teachers and administration value
performace above attiture and values of the whole person. In many cases the
girls being promoted are not the girls with Good Character or values. A blind eye
to given to many Mean Girls and how to teat others is not incouraged or taught.
173 I couldn't answer Q34-36, as I have no clue what you might be doing in these
areas. I see the newsletter mailed monthly, which always has a message, and I
see the first school day spent on "rules", but I doubt that has any impact
whatsoever other than wasting a day---a letting the lawyers have a disclaimer
that every child was told...
174 I feel many teachers now take it as a questioning of their teaching ability when
questioned about a childs grade rather than looking at it as a need to find a way
to work with that particular child.
175 We are pleased with the transition from a small private religious school to a large
public school. The faculty and staff were very understanding and helpful. Thanks
for the effort.
176 The demeaning remarks don't just come from student to student but from staff to
student too... It's hard enough to fit in at this age but when someone attacks
your self-esteem, it's hard to over come.
177 Teachers are the crucial person in making character education real to the
students. Some are fantastic role models and use teaching moments to help the
children become better adults. Others seem to not care about the individual
student and about doing anything to make the student successful. My daughter
doesn't really need this; so, it is remarkable to me that she feels these particular
teachers do not truly care about her. I see that she has to "make" herself care
about those classes and I believe it is because of the shallowness of the
relationship between her and the teacher.
178 Please monitor the cat pound at EHS football games. I have "heard" from
students & others that there is alcohol being consumed in water bottles (vodka)
during the game.
179 I don't feel that it's possible for any school to effectively deal with the day to day
teasing or exclusion because most of it is not reported for fear of retaliation and
most of it is not witnessed so there is no way to prove it's happening
180 Rewarding academic performance should be the highest level of effort. The kids
that feel left out are the ones with weak social skills. That is where efforts should
be concentrated. Even the Academic Pep Assembly is truly just a showcase of
the social kids skit efforts. More attention is paid to the one kid that had
"improvement" than the kids who were top 10, Bright flight or Merit Scholar.
More attention is paid to the entertainment skit than is paid to the academic
clubs that received excellence or awards. Columbine and other issues that are
similar is because the kids who are left out, want to strike back. The kids good
at sports or who have good social skills do not need Pep assemblies, the kids
the need pep assemblies are the ones try in other areas, achieve excellence, but
society and the school ignores. Ignores in relationship to the attention paid to
her students on open classroom.
181 Some of these questions are really vague. Mar 13, 2008 9:18 AM
182 I know my son has had some problems with teasing, but he does not voice it. I
know from another student that did the right thing and stood up for him.
183 I think it is uncalled for when a student couldn't make it to school on time due to
accidents from the snow and the road was blocked and my child was considered
unexcused. That needs to be changed.
184 I feel disrespect toward teachers and all staff is tolerated much more than it
should be. Consequences to disrespect are often minimal at best. This needs
to change.
185 I selected "3" often because I am not aware of the efforts in the area of character
education. By the high school level, I am less concerned about this at school.
186 When my child first attended EHS, they were disciplined for what I thought were
minor goofing around with friends. Later I could see and appreciate that the
school was firm and they wanted to get any challenges under control
IMMEDIATELY. I am so thankful they did.
187 My son is involved with High School Sports - the coaches at Marquette strongly
emphasize good character and sportsmanship.
188 My children often feel intimidated by the actions of some of the desegregation
students. They say these students frequently use harassing verbiage and use
physical intimidation to block hallways or force other students to use another
route. They also say there are problems with disruptive behavior in many classes
that teachers ignore for fear of be labeled racist.
189 Although cell phones are not to be used during school hours, my child constantly
tells us that this is not being enforced in the classroom.
190 EXCLUDING A CHILD IS NOT BACKED UP OR ENFORCED.IF A TEACHER
SEES OR KNOWS A CHILD IS ALWAYS THE LAST ONE OR THIRD MAN
OUT IT IS THE TEACHERS JOB, YES JOB TO GET THAT CHILD INCLUDED
WITHOUT MAKING THEM EMBARRASED.
191 The teachers at EHS should receive very high marks! However, we are very
disappointed with what we have observed with coaching sports at EHS. Specific
areas of concern are girls varsity volleyball and boys baseball programs. There
needs to be much more supervision and training provided to these coaches on
how they treat and communicate with athletes. The EHS Athletic Director is
either not aware of these issues, or does not feel there is a problem. Coaches
are either not aware or they do not care how they are affecting students lives.
192 I know there are drugs in school which is a huge concern for me. When I'm at
the school, I never see the school police officer monitoring the halls and my son
says regularly how he never sees the school police officer either. I believe the
officer needs to be much more visible and enforce behavioral problems as well.
I have seen boys and girls groping each other in plain sight of everyone and
have witnessed exceptionally poor behavior among students as well. I'd like to
see these kids being taught better behavior and more respect for others as that
is deeply lacking. There was a tornado drill done earlier in the week and other
schools participated but Lafayette didn't. That also concerns me. We don't
know what happens to the kids if the school is hit by a disaster. I do believe the
school administrators can do much more do make the school safe and turn out
more respectful individuals.
193 High school coaches exhibit disparaging or demeaning remarks to the students.
This behavior needs to be changed.
194 My daughter was injured the first month of school at Lafayette by a fight that
broke out in the hallway and another student was pushed into her as she was on
her way to class. She came home with a scrape to her chin/cheek and a large
bruise ( the students backpack hit her in the face). The fight was clearly in a
hallway but was unnoticed by any school employee.
200 Re: Item #27; Although I am not aware of a specific incident, I am certain that
drugs are present in the school and available to any student seeking them.
201 Some of my responses stem from incidents that happened at the middle school
level. I don't believe the high school handles these situations any differently
based on what I have seen.
202 My kids have repeatedly complained about the lunch staff being rude and
generally unpleasant to the kids at lunchtime.
203 Some of the teachers nee more knowledge in content area and more helpful
answering questions. THERE IS A DRUG PROBLEM THAT EVERYONE IS
AVOIDING.
204 This is my third child at Lafayette. Both of my older children were bullied during
their high school years and one of them was stalked. So far, I have not seen any
of that behavior directed toward my child who is currently at Lafayette.
205 I get frustrated that some teachers do not provide a syllabus of work expected
for a quarter. They also don't give a list of assignments due in the future,
whether that time period is 1 week or a quarter. When students take very difficult
classes, they need to know what the assignments will be for the week so they
can get them done over the weekend. Every year, my student has 2 out of 8
teachers that provide no syllabus or list of assignments due. It is usually the
foreign language teachers and math teachers. I also wish there was more
communication about assessment based learning. Some teachers are
implementing it this year and that is very frustrating for students and parents. It
seems like an illogical way to grade students and I"m very frustrated that it is
being implemented without parents knowing.
206 I love Rockwood Summit. THe teachers truly care about the academic and
personal welfare of the students.
207 My son is the fourth child that has/will graduate from LHS. We have been
extremely pleased with the outstanding education at LHS. Our sons have been
well prepared for their college coursework. Thank you!
208 I would highly recommend having a counselor or someone else follow up on
students that transfer to Rockwood schools from other districts or from out of
town. This is very stressful for some of them and a quick meeting/note or show
of concern goes a long way towards making these children feel at home.
209 It has been my experience during the past 4 years that LHS administration
caters to the opinions of a select group of students. These same "elite" (almost
pre-determined since freshman year) students are selected over and over again
to be role models for others, serve in various capacities in organizations, and so
on. There are many talented students who populate LHS who are overlooked to
a great degree because they are not as outgoing or self-promoting.
Furthermore, my experience has also been that while most of the teachers do an
excellent job w/ two-way communications w/ parents, some of the principals do
not. During the course of the last 4 years, I've sent 2 letters and 1 e-mail and
made 2 phone calls to various principals on various issues. I didn't receive a
response to ANY of them w/out further follow-up. This was very diappointing.
211 I believe the online grading system is excellent, but the teachers are often remiss
in recording the grades in a timely and/or accurate fashion. I have been very
surprised by the number of times teachers have missed recording assignments
and then take several days and reminders to update records. This puts the
student in an ackward position.
212 I have personally witnessed bullying between students as well as staff to student
and staff to staff. There is an atmosphere of control and punishment, students
are not encouraged to offer any input, only to follow the established rules
213 Something needs to be done about the drug abuse. My son tells me that nearly
all the kids are experimenting with drugs and alcohol. He is a freshman.
214 There needs to be a process for kids to be able to change teachers when they
cannot resolve personal issues with the teacher and it is affecting their grades.
217 The student that gets B's seems to get lost. Only the OSEP and A students
seem to matter. They keep giving leadership opportunities to the same students.
Kids with B's can be great leaders but never have the opportunity. They are
made to feel inadequate. I have twins that are seniors with a 3.0 and 3.5
gradepoint and they have NEVER been rewarded at any grade level award
ceremony. They are great kids lost in the crowd. Even in sports they could not
make a Varsity sport as a Junior. Students that new how to play the brown nose
game passed them by. They refused to play so and that was their choice. My
daughter did not try out her senior year. I think Character education needs to
start with the administration looking at the student in the middle. I am hoping
college is a better experience for my children. They are great at accepting
rejection as a result and are ready to move on. I am not bitter; only telling you
this in hopes that it may change for a future student. They recieved a great
education and overall I am happy with the school. I just think it needed to be
brought to your attention.
218 the blacks shove the white girls in the hall between classes. the kids are
drinking in the parking lot on Friday football nights. the school should check the
FACEBOOK and MYSPACE and bench the players and cheerlearders that are
drinking. Our school does not punish enough for drinking.
219 Have heard of certain teacher that seems intimidated by students in class.
Students are disruptive, teacher threatens action, but never follows through.
220 This just happened today- a parent told me that she went to Academic Pep
Assembly and that activity addresses the academically gifted as sports
assemblies address the physically gifted There seems to be no high school
recognition of those that are extremely creative. There are outside awards which
are given to those students. The safety issues- some I rated lower because I
remember the woman who was on school property a few years ago with a gun.
Recently, I have been up at school and observed how diligently the men
(security) at the front desk are checking people in and monitoring the parking lot.
The disparaging remarks are the typical teenage boy banter-nothing sinister.
221 School teachers/administrators want parents to be too involved in their childs
academics. Instead of providing suggestions on how to ENCOURAGE your
child they have a control/punish mentality. I believe the lack of respect my child
feels for some teachers (#31 above) is directly due to my child not feeling he/she
can express his/her opinions at school (#32 above). I think Rockwood & many of
its parents are self-focused - most interested in status/looking good instead of
truly helping individual students learn.
222 I have no idea what methods re character is addressed in the school. My
daughter has receivved threatening gestures/comments in the halls between
classes. They have not been consistent but enough to make her uncomfortable
and usually over something stupid like walking in front of someone or looking at
someone "wrong"
223 My children have attended several high schools throughout the US and without a
doubt Lafayette is by far the best in all aspects. I am most impressed with the
teachers and administrators. They are there at every event after school---I'm not
sure they ever get to go home!!
224 My experience at Marquette has been very good. I feel that the staff cares
greatly about the students and the families. We had one experience last school
year with a student and that was addressed immediately by the staff and
resolved. On another note, I am curious if Marquette has every entertained the
idea of providing an after school activity addressing safety and women. I feel
that many high school students are naive and very trusting. Coming from the
banking industry, I was forced to attend annual security/safety training, which I
still use today. There tools that we possess that can help us be safer that many
young ladies are completely unaware of. It might be something to consider in
the future. I am more that happy to discuss this idea further is you are
interested. Thank you. Janet Koch
225 Character education was very prelevent at the grade school level and still held
as important in middle school. It does not seem to be a part of classroom
instruction in high school, but maybe it is and I'm not aware of that.
226 Security: I believe that all school buildings should be locked down elimination
unauthorized entry. All exterior doors should be used for egress only, and all
entry should be gained thru a single monitored entry door at office once class
begins and remains the policy till class is dismissed daily.
228 From talking with my child it seems difficult to work with some teachers. it is
their way or no way. i think Saturday detentions are given out for silly reasons
and if these are the only problems that warrant detentions then LHS obviously
does not have much in the way of behavior concerns.
229 Marquette does not do a good job of engaging students in their high school life.
This is my third clid there and it has been a steady decline. Academics are
stressed so much that you have totally forgotten the "whole" child. There is a
climate of fear and disprespect among staff and students that I can not account
for. Even the athletic programs are suffering. Marquette needs to focus on kids
having successful high school experiences and note that success is many
different things. Kids are not celebrated at Marquette in a way that is
meaningful. Finally there is a culture of drugs and drinking that is not adequately
addressed.
230 I have one daughter currently at Eureka and one graduated. I have only once
been disappointed in the educational process at Eureka and have always felt
respected as a parent. I felt I was always included in my children's educational
process. I have never feared for their safety at the school or at school functions. I
find the climate at Eureka motivational, respectful and nurturing for my children.
231 Good character awards (Marvelous Mustangs)seem to be given out to teacher's
pets and in a couple cases, these are "mean girls" but the teachers are snowed
over by them. It's too bad the really nice kids don't receive more recognition
instead of the kids who already get so much.
232 Grades are very competitive at Marquette and kids know how to work the
system. I don't think it shows good character for teachers to change grades that
aren't earned or have kids who habitually makeup tests because they miss when
they aren't prepared. The Top 10 ranking is very dear and can be very lucrative
for scholarhips and these kids should be held to the highest standard.
233 My son has witnessed episodes of bullying and physical agression, as well as
verbal.
234 While the school may promote character education, it is not taken seriously by
the students. In addition, a lot of problems occur on facebook.com, which
understandably, school officials cannot monitor.
235 As a parent, I have observed that this school has excellent teachers. I have
appreciated the dedication to their students. They have been very concerned
and caring with my child. Always informing me if there has been a problem or
concern. The teachers have been great. I have had a major problem over
what should have been a minor issue When dealing with certain administrators
at this school. I found them difficult to talk with and I was treated in a
disrespectful and demeaning manner. (If they treat parents like this I shudder to
think how the students are treated.) With this minor issue I had to go through
several administrators before I had to go to the top and get it resolved. The top
administrator was very helpful and solved the problem quickly and efficiently.
The principles I had to deal with to get there were a nightmare. As a parent this
has given me a very bad feeling toward this school and I will be very glad when
my child is no longer there.
236 Good character is adressed at the school, but is given lip service. More needs to
be done to promote respect and to discourage bullying.
237 I feel that Rockwood Summit-- the climate, the expectations, the materials, the
staff/teachers--is not equal with the other 4 schools.
238 My daughter has been the victim of bullying by a group of girls. We have talked
about it and she did not want me involved. She is a junior and feels that she
should be taking care of it herself. She is a quiet, good kid, who does not call
attention to herself from teachers....other than they would probably say she is a
good student. She is involved in activities outside of school and has felt that
those activities are not appreciated at school. Overall, I have been worried that
when she finally "sticks up" for herself with these girls she will be seen as the
one starting the trouble. I have always counseled her to ignore nasty, mean
comments, but recently it has gone too far. Hopefully she will be ok....it is a
learning experience for her, just hard for a mom to watch!
opportunistic periods, therefore little can be done from the teacher's standpoint.
242 As with all things, there are exceptions to each question. There are absolutely
amazing educators at LHS and there are dismal failures. and until you have a
child go through LHS you don't know which is which.
243 There needs to be more presence of admin especially when the VICC students
are crowded together being rowdy, this can be intimadating to single students
passing through the halls.
244 I know the school tries to deal with the mean girl syndrome but I am amazed that
it is still a big issue in high school. It's now moving backwards into the grade
school which just gives it more time to develop and become a way of life for
many female students.
245 The only time I see evidence the school addresses character, academic honesty
/ discourage cheating is on the class contracts parents and students have to sign
at the beginning of the year. Is this effective?
246 It is interesting that there are no questions to address bullying/disparaging
comments from teachers to students! That is where you have a signifcant
problem at EHS. Teachers treat the students like they are peers to be teased or
mocked. I often feel that the teachers treat the kids like college students and not
high school students. This level of relating can be positive and respectful, but it
often leads to innapropriate comments from faculty to students or coaches to
students. For curriculum, I feel there is a significant problem in the area of
science. Two years in a row, my child has felt completely unprepared for tests
and exams in Biology and Chemistry. Other students have communicated
similiar problems of being tested on material they did not learn and/or were
never exposed to in the classroom. Overall, the education our child is getting
has been very impressive and most of the teachers are wonderful. Several
teachers have gone out of their way to communicate regulary via e-mail and
most respond very quickly when contacted. The few who choose to ignore
parent concerns and questions appear to be the same ones who have
excessively long lines at conferences and act the most defensive when
questioned about their expectations/posting grades online/preparation for tests,
etc. Our child is an excellent student, active in extracurricular activities and
generally gets very positive feedback from teachers. As a parent, I have been
involved in the schools at the highest levels since Kindergarten. I feel frustrated
by the stone wall of silence I get when I asked questions or express my concern
over issues that arise from time to time. The term I've used before is "circling of
the wagons" by the staff to keep parents from asking questions or expressing
dismay of any kind. We recently experienced a tough situation and needed help
with scheduling. We received almost NO help and felt completely brushed off by
the staff who are paid to help in these situations. It was very disappointing.
Finally, please know that because of this general attitude, we have decided not
to support the current bond issue. Perhaps the administrators need to reflect a
bit about best to spend the money they have - instead of hiring more
administrators and paying them six figure salaries. Again, these comments are
shared with sincerity and overall, we have been very pleased with our
experience with Rockwood. You just have a small number of large issues that
do not appear to be being addressed.
247 My freshman son has been shoved into lockers, cursed at, had his cell phone
stolen, had his nipple pinched (?!) in the halls, and has been bullied on
staircases/ "flat tired." I have reported these incidents to administration and
have received a sympathetic hearing. However, I felt that the solution offered,
peer mediation, was unacceptable. My son does not wish to meet or confront
these bullies face-to-face as all of the incidents appear to be unrelated and
instigated by kids he doesn't know. Why would he want to engage them further
and become "known" to them? Why isn't the school more interested in
punishing this behavior, instead of artificially trying to create peace and love? I
think these bullies are empowered by the administration's soft touch approach
and don't fear the consequences of outright mean behaviors. I appreciate the
administration's efforts to stop theft in the locker rooms; it is VERY important.
My older 11th grade son has had his athletic locker buglarized (the lock pounded
off) twice and his belongings stolen. Many of his friends have lost items of
significant value from the locker room. One last note: all of the above offenses
have been committed by inter-district transfer students. Is the district afraid to
effectively discipline this group's behavior because of the possibility of being
smeared in the press as the Parkway district was a year or so ago? Just a small
handful of students have ruined the positive school environment for my sons and
probably for many others as well. Where is the justice in this? My boys don't
feel like they attend a "good" high school because of all this nonsense. While I
applaud the academic input they've received, the social/affective aspect has
been horrible. *We suspect the $250 cellphone was stolen by the same group of
people because of the rap music call tone that was downloaded to our account
immediately after the theft.
248 We have been very pleased with this particular aspect of our childrens education
at Lafayette H.S.
249 Bullying needs to take a top priority as far back as middle school. No tolerance.
Way to easy with these kids. Drugs and alcohol- way to easy. When tachers
recognize kids are on something they turn there cheek.
250 Incorporate assemblies into school year regarding drugs and alchohol usage -
bring in exceptional guest speakers
251 Schools should be responsible for teaching school subjects. The parents
shouldn't have to be involved in every aspect of the education process. I think
Rockwood expects to much from parents when we are paying high tax dollars for
education. On the other hand Rockwood should have to teach my kids
responsibility, manners, respect, etc. Thats my job and I would appreciate you
Rockwood leavin that job to me.
252 I rated several items as #1 (poor), not so much because I believe the school is
doing a poor job, it is because I just don't know what is being done, so they are
doing a poor job of communicating these actions to parents. Your survey needs
a "Don't Know" option for each item,
253 The MHS school climate lacks school spirit. A much bigger effort should be
made to get kids to sporting events, pep rallys, etc. I believe Coach Lineman is
a hinderance in this area. He is also a blockade to parent involvement, and
shows very little regard or respect to parents. Sports is an area where kids
experience self pride and school pride and he has a poor outlook in both of those
aresa. I have seen a real lack of leadership and poor decision making by him
and I am concerned he will be a cause of a lesser high school experience than
could otherwise be.
254 I think the burden of character development falls more onto the shoulders of the
parents than the school, but we truly appreciate your support!
255 The school needs to do a better job at screening students bussed from other
districts. with a zero tolerence for safety related infractions. If this is done most
of your security problems would be reduced. You will also have students who
want to learn.
256 These areas are very one sided. To often I have heard of the bullying and such
being done by the minority and the other person having it done to is the one that
gets disciplined. I realize the schools receive money for students out side there
district, but it is wrong to coddle them. Also too many children slip through the
cracks. The focus is only on the "over achievers" not the truly gifted or ones
that need help. I realize the schools look better by students who "work the
system", but it is just wrong.
257 With regard to number 32, and the children having the opportunity to voice their
opinions....I believe they are allowed to express themselves during open
discussions during class, etc... Where I believe there is a problem, is if the child
is struggling in a class or even if they want to question a grade or something that
has gone on in a class. The kids are so worried about bringing up 'issues' with
the teachers for fear of being treated unfairly, or being looked down upon by the
teachers for the future. They worry about what affect it might have on them for
the rest of the semester/year. There is also concern when a parent goes to a
teacher as well.
258 Girl child feels some of the bathrooms are off limits. I have told her to go to the
nurse office if she can not find a bathroom to use. Also some teachers make
themself more student friendly then others both boy and girl feel this way.
259 There is plenty of teasing going on in the hallway at the school which isn't
addressed by teachers. You can even walk through the school and disparaging
remarks on lockers that is just ignored by all school personnel.
260 These questions should be put to students. Unless a specific issue arises, I get
no indication what day-to-day life at school in those terms is like.
261 I think administators need to work on students on campus NOT what the student
does off campus on in the privacy of their own homes. Just because a student
makes a mistake in society it does NOT mean it should carry over at the school
level. If I get divorced should I get fired over it at my job? Should I be called into
my bosses office and be subject to harrassment?
262 i think it would be very beneficial to have a police drug dog on every high s chool
campus. it works very well in other high schools and would make our high school
campuses safer.
263 REspect for their teachers depends on the teacher and how they handle the
class, the homework and the material
264 I am a very involved parent and I feel it was my job (a long time ago) to develope
my daughter's character. I am responsible for this. Her time in school needs to
be more academic. She is bound for college and had good character when she
first entered Summit. Addressing this as part of academic grade should only be
necessary for those who show poor character development during the
highschool years.
265 Bus safety is because my child questions the ability of the bus driver, not the
students on the bus. Similarly, another child fears the reckless student driving in
the parking lot, not a personal violation. Students should not be allowed to miss
school because of heavy test loads to gain extra study time to keep high GPA's
intact. Honors students should be held to the same standards as everyone else.
266 Obviously not sure how my school encourages/addresses these types of issues Mar 12, 2008 2:48 PM
267 There is too much verbal jostling done in the school. Better conduct and respect
of the students peers must be encouraged more.
268 The white children are called names by some of the black children however that
is not addressed. If my white son (who has been called Casper, Cracker, Frosty,
etc) called a black kid a name he'd have been disciplined to the fullest extent.
My son quit reporting the name calling as nothing was being done - the example
was set however and he has a very clear understanding of how the world
tolerates racism.
269 my student has some concern with how he is treated by some of the VICC
students. Is is uncomfortable with some of their behavior
270 I don't think the teachers, especially younger ones, take certain actions against
serious behavior. I do know of an incident in which a girl was photographed in
an inappropropriate manner (the girl didn't realize that certain a certain body part
was exposed while dancing). The student who took the picture went around
showing several people. She finally showed the picture to her teacher (this was
for the school yearbook) and was told to delete it. I don't think this teacher
understood how serious this was. Basically, she was circulating pornagraphy
and a simple "delete it" was not the appropriate consequence for behaviour that
she had to have known was going to seriously hurt the emotional well being of
the girl involved in the photo. Shame on the student and double shame on the
teacher for not taking this to the parents of the photographer and principle.
271 Comment regarding drugs and alcohol is related to students discussing during
class (PE). Teacher not aware of conversation- son overhead girls discussing
on several occasions
272 I think that teachers and administrators could do a lot more to discourage
cheating. They could monitor during testing and they could use more than 1 test
form per day.
273 I do have a comment about the safety in the cafeteria at Lafayette. I was recently
in the cafeteria during a lunch period and was very shocked to learn that the
cafeteria doors are locked to keep students from wandering the halls. We had to
find a teacher to unlock the doors with a key so that we could leave. I don't feel
this is a very good practice. What if there was a fire and the students needed to
get out?
274 From a safety perpective, my concern is the heavy drug/alcohol use at LHS. It's
difficult to talk about character when administrators turn a blind eye to the
biggest problem in the school. Everyone has an excuse why the drug problem
can't be addressed, in the meantime, drugs are bought and sold daily in every
hallway in the school. It's a shame....
275 Bullying occurs at all levels in Rockwood. The teachers/counselors seem to
ignore it because they are afraid to approach the parents of the bully--due to
legal ramifications. What about the victim? There should be a zero tolerance for
bullying of any kind. Rockwood is way behind the times on this, I'm sure we've
all learned from Columbine what could happen if we ignore this problem.
276 YOU NEED MAKE A SELECTION OF UNKNOWN WITH THE YES/NO
ANSWERS
277 I believe in high school the child needs to take on the responsibility of taking care
of themselves and handling themselves in a manner that will achieve success in
school. Of course faculty are always watchful but character starts at home and
at high school level is the childs responsibility.
278 This is our first year at Lafayette. I'm learning about everything as I go along. I
did attend the Renaissance Pep Assembly yesrterday & was very impressed
with the emphasis on academics & character.
279 better signage or more user friendly signage in the school due to its sprawling
layout would be helpful. For example on the guidance corridor signs near the
top of the wall which indicator which is the math hall, science hall, ... with or
without room numbers. Signage could look similar to when you get off an
elevator or when walking in the Scottrade Arena. When you walk in the various
doors maybe there could be a more user-friendly map more like what a Disney
Park might use instead of a line drawing schematic.
280 if you are stuff's kids that mean you can do whatever you want, specially if you
are principal's son
