Parent Staff Organization
Welcome to the RSMS PSO !!!
The PSO is the Parent Staff Organization at Rockwood South Middle School. All parents are members of the PSO, and we hope you will become
involved and help make a tremendous difference. Our purpose is:
1. To promote the welfare and education of children and youth eligible to attend the Rockwood School District and the Rockwood Middle
School in the home, school and community.
2. To support the school in improving education in ways that will adhere to administrative policy and the Rockwood School District’s mission,
goals and beliefs.
3. To raise funds or programs and equipment to further the education of children and youth.
4. To bring about a closer relationship between the home and the school, that parents and teachers may work cooperatively in the education
of children and youth.
5. To foster communication, cooperation, support, information, and education within the Rockwood School District, including District staff,
parents and the general community.
We meet monthly, at 6:30 p.m., in the RSMS library. Please plan to join us at one (or more) of the meetings listed below:

Parents! Come experience a day as a student in middle school. You will participate
in block scheduling, core and encore classes, lunch and passing periods!
On October 19 th , starting at 7:30 you will attend class with your student for one or as
many classes as you like. You will be a participant and you will be involved in the
activities and working on assignments with your student.
October 19 th is an “A” day. If interested in participating, you must RSVP by completing

Bullying and Violence Prevention at RSMS
For many years, RSMS has been part of the Caring
Schools program. We are continually working on ways
to develop and strengthen a sense of community among
students, staff, and parents. Obviously, bullying and
violence prevention are cornerstones of creating a caring
community. While we work on ways to address bullying
here at school, there are important steps parents can
take at home to support our efforts. The suggestions
below are adapted from an article by Meg Petri, M.Ed.
and Executive Director of the Progressive Youth Connection.
* Communicate with your child. This cannot be
stressed enough. Listen without judging and ask questions
about whether they have seen bullying or violence
at school or social gatherings.
* Identify people that your child can go to for help, if
necessary. Pick at least one adult at school who your
child would feel comfortable approaching, and two others
(such as grandparents, aunts/uncles or family
friends) who could offer guidance and assistance. It’s
important to identify several different people who can
provide a support system for your child in case you are
not available or your child feels too embarrassed or fearful
of your reaction to approach you. If you are involved
in identifying these adults, you can have confidence
that they will have your child’s best interest in
mind.
* If you hear something disturbing, notify the school.
If you are not sure it is a school concern, you may contact
our School Resource Officer, Officer Starzyk. Give us
specifics about why you have concerns. We will investigate
any school-related issues, and Officer Starzyk can
help if the concern is in the community.
Bullying is against Rockwood district policy and we have
procedures in place to address it at school. It is always
better to be safe than sorry.
* Don’t be afraid to intervene. If you see behaviors in
your child that concern you, contact your child’s counselor
to discuss it. Behaviors may indicate that your child
is the target of bullying OR that your child may be bullying
others. Behaviors of concern could include sadness,
withdrawal, frequent stomach or headaches, anxiety about
coming to school, fascination with violence, making violent
statements, or a sudden change in behavior. If you
fear that your child may harm themselves or someone
else, take them to the hospital for an evaluation.
All of us need to be vigilant about violence prevention
and intervention. Since the beginning of the year, gradelevel
counselors and principals have visited every classroom
to discuss bullying behaviors and Rockwood’s commitment
to bullying and violence prevention.
We will also continue building our Caring School Community
through monthly Respect Time lessons. We are
still eager to welcome new members to our Caring School
Community Professional Learning Community.
Our CSC-PLC meets on the 2 nd Monday of every month
from 2:30 – 3:30 in Room 118. Thanks to Mrs. Rasnic
and her son, Josh, Mrs. Bippen and her daughter Lauren,
and Mrs. Stout and her daughter Madison for joining us
this year.

Calling School to
Report An Absence
Attendance is important. We’re concerned when your child is out of school. Please keep the office informed of any planned absences
along with last minute illnesses. Parents/guardians are responsible for notifying the school office of their child’s absence.
On the day of the absence, a phone call should be made to the office. We must hear from a parent or guardian each day a student
is absent. If we do not have a call, the absence is unexcused. For your convenience, absences may be phoned in before the
start of the school day by calling 636-861-7723. When calling, ask for the attendance office. If the auto attendant picks up,
press 626 to leave a voice mail message or press “1” for the attendance office. If you leave a message, don’t forget to include
the following: student’s name, grade, reason for absence including, symptoms, and your name and relationship to the student.

Student Sign Out Procedures
If a student is being dismissed from school
early (example - doctor appointment), a
parent note should be sent to the front office
upon arrival to school stating time of
departure and reason for leaving. The front
office will in turn write the student a
“Student Hall Pass” releasing the student
from class at the designated time. Parents
should come to the front office to sign out
and pick up their son or daughter.

Halloween Safety Tips
Never trick-or-treat alone. You should always go with an adult.
All costumes should allow you to see and hear perfectly.
Costumes should fit. Costumes that are too big may cause you to trip.
Wear costumes that are bright, reflective, and flame-retardant.
Children should stay within familiar areas and surroundings.
Parents should establish a route for children.
Only trick-or-treat at houses you know and where the lights are on.
By using a flashlight, you can see and be seen by others.
Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house.
Walk, DO NOT RUN! Walk on sidewalks and driveways. Cross the street at corners/crosswalks and
not in between parked cars.
Never eat any open treats. Don’t eat any treats until your parents or trusted adult check them.
You should never talk to strangers or get in into strangers’ cars.
Carry a mobile phone for quick communication.
Halloween is fun for people of all ages, but its important that you and your children remain safe.
These simple tips will help make your Halloween celebration better than ever.

Parent Book Study Beginning
On Wednesday evening, October 13th, we will be reading
and discussing the book NO—Why Kids of All Ages
Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It by Dr.
David Walsh. This is the same author who wrote the
earlier book Why Do They Act That Way?
Group facilitator will be Mrs. Mary Corsair, current 6th
grade counselor, but parents of all grade levels are invited
to attend. The group will meet from 7:00—8:00
p.m. each Wednesday evening for 6 weeks (October
13, 20, 27 and November 3, 10 and 17) at Rockwood
South. Participants will need to purchase their own
copy of the book, which is available new or used from
Amazon.com (for as little as 19 cents plus shipping), or
can be purchased at local bookstores. If you are interested
in attending the group, please contact Mrs. Corsair
to register.
Rockwood Drug Free Coalition
Did you know that middle school is often the time when
kids first begin experimenting with alcohol and other
drugs, and that 7th grade is frequently a pivotal year
when students decide which path (either trying or abstaining)
they are going to take? Just this week, in two
separate conversations, I have heard about students
getting “high” from cough medicine—and this is in conversation
with people who either live or work in the Fenton
community. The Rockwood Drug Free Coalition is a
group of Rockwood employees, parents and community
members dedicated to reducing substance abuse in our
community through education, advocacy and community
service.
We meet on the second Thursday of each month from
3:30– 5:00 p.m. at LaSalle Spring Middle School and
are seeking more Fenton representation. If you are
concerned about the issue of substance abuse, want to
do more to keep our kids safe, and have time on Thursday
afternoons once a month, please contact Mrs. Mary
Corsair, 6th grade counselor, to find out more. Parent
input is a valuable resource as the Coalition expands
our efforts to build a stronger and safer Rockwood community.

Walking To School Or To The Bus Stop
As a parent, you should:
♦ Know the routes your children take.
♦ Instruct them to travel with others.
♦ Tell your children to stay away from strangers and
strange vehicles.
♦ Periodically review general pedestrian safety rules
such as:
• Walk on sidewalks.
• When there are no sidewalks, walk in
single file on the side of the road.
• Cross the street at intersections only.
• Follow instructions of school crossing
guards.
BUS SAFETY
Remind your children that riding the bus involves the
safety of everyone on the bus.
Children should:
♦ Remain seated while the bus is moving.
♦ Keep hands, arms and head inside the bus at all
times.
♦ Talk quietly so they don’t distract the driver.
♦ Keep hands, feet and all other objects to them
selves.
♦ Keep the aisles clear.

You may call to make a conference appointment starting Tuesday, October 19th,
through Wednesday, October 27th, 2010, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00

To expedite your call, please have the following information ready:
(1) Date you would like to make your appointment: October 25th or October 27th

Appointments are not necessary with any of the encore teachers. Encore teachers may be
visited any time during the evening on a first come, first serve basis. A location map will be
provided upon your arrival showing conference locations. If you are unable to visit teachers on
Parent/Teacher Conference Night and still wish to confer with a teacher, please contact the
teacher or team leader to set up a team conference or individual teacher conference.

RENAISSANCE, which means “rebirth’, is a
philosophy and a program that seeks to motivate
students and staff, recognize and celebrate
achievement, and develop a positive climate for everyone.
The Renaissance program at Rockwood South will provide incentives
for success and create enthusiasm about learning with the
help and support of community businesses and organizations, while
nurturing a partnership that sustains growth in all areas.
We invite students, parents, and community members to join our
Renaissance Learning Community, where we will determine meaningful
ways to acknowledge and reward valuable accomplishments
and worthwhile efforts. The Renaissance Learning Community
normally meets on the 2nd Monday of each month from 2:40 -

Congratulations

The library’s first contest of the year provided students the chance to win Mockingjay,
the third and final book of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy.
The books are so popular that we have reserve lists for them. To enter the Hunger
Games Trivia challenge, students had to answer 10 questions about the first
two books of the trilogy, Hunger Games and Catching Fire. Winners were chosen
randomly from the entries with all correct answers.
Keep an eye out for more fun contests in the library, especially during
Teen Read Week – October 18 and the week of the
Scholastic Book Fair – October 25.

Clothing for P.E. Classes
Students must have a separate change of clothing for physical
education classes. P.E. teachers ask that these items be
clearly marked with the student’s name for easy identification.
Physical education uniforms will be available for sale
throughout the school year. Information concerning dress
requirements will be given during physical education classes.
TARGET -Take Charge of Education
We receive a check from Target stores from families participating in
the Target Take Charge of Education Program. When families sign
up designating our school as their school of choice and then use their
Target charge cards, we receive a 1% return on money spent.
